I agree with djm79 (again, promise I’m not stalking ya). You don’t delete the image definition. When you need to update an image, you DEPLOY to proper hardware, make your updates, and then UPLOAD that computer and it overwrite the old version of the image.

Some things to note:
Make sure you prepare the computer before uploading the image. If you make tons of changes, it’s probably wise to defrag again and chksdsk /f

Remove from the domain before you upload.

An image that is being uploaded is stored in /images/dev/, and when complete, is moved to /images/imagename. So you’ll need enough storage available to hold the old image and the new image until the image is completely uploaded and FOG removes the old files and replaces with the new ones.

Sysprep with Windows 7 will not correctly rename and join computers to the domain. It does the join to domain before the rename. Means you get computers in the domain named WIN02349XXDF0S, when the computer is really named BOB.

Install the FOG Client (http://[yourfogserver]/fog/client) on your image and let fog rename and join the computer to the domain. You’ll need to get FOGCrypt onto a windows machine to encrypt the password you use to authenticate to the domain, but there is info in the wiki on how to do that.

Thanks so much for your quick replies! Yesterday I added that same line to the lftp config file and it worked just fine. This is a great feature since we will be replicating images to 8 of our remote sites, some of which have a slow connection to us (and operate 24/7 so after hours replication isn’t a viable solution). Thanks again!

You tell it the DMI field to key on and which image to push based on that DMI value.

wubba,

Welcome to the forum and FOG in general. While you can use FOG like you intended. It’s not very efficient. FOG is really designed to be a business/enterprise imaging/deployment solution. So you would have 1 master image for desktops, and another for laptops, assuming you’re using XP. Or just having 1 Windows 7 image for everything. While you can make an image for every machine, it would require A LOT of hard drive space. Currently, our server has 7 images, plus bootable iso’s and i’m only using 56 GB of space on my drive. However, if you are looking at doing daily backup’s, I would recommend that you look at Clonezilla. It’s free and relatively easy to use. While FOG can do everything that you want it to, it might be a bit of a hassle and a lot of work to get it to work the way you want.

Please feel free to ask any more questions you may have, or if you have any concerns.

Hi Chad-bisd,

Yes I am setting the setting under the client and I made sure global wasn’t ticked on, it did not work.

I have also tried global ticked on and service settings set under the client.

The only way it will work is if the global setting is set, but this means all the clients will have the same resolution and this does not fix the problem.

Thanks

Problem seems to have resolved itself. May have been between keyboard and monitor.

I just checked the access and error logs but didn’t find anything that made sense to me. I cleared the logs and tried creating a host through the web GUI and it didn’t work. No error message, it just closes like it worked.

The problem might have been that I was using the MAC address for the name. Apparently that isn’t allowed even though I remember the full host registry and inventory doing that on its own.

Anyway, it just worked twice with a random hostname and a MAC address so it appears to to be working correctly. I swear this didn’t work yesterday, however.

Thanks very much for taking a look at this.

I would assume bundling software is just ZEN Works’s fancy way of saying “install software post-image”.
If this is true, FOG would be able to accomplish this through snapins (you could even do it with batch, vbscript, and csv files on network storage if you really wanted to - that’s how my company does it right now).

As for point 5, I’m guessing they are talking about mounting and editing the image being stored on the server. Doing that… I’m not so sure. It looks like this forum has some insight into it:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/how-to-mount-img-file-882386/
(I believe FOG stores images as the .img file type? Or possibly .img.000, but I’m not sure how or if it differs)

I would love to hear some steps about how you got the software inventory into the fog interface, if you have the time to help out. I’m looking into doing that myself, but I know nothing about php, and a limited amount about sql.
Did you add/replace the files listed in the chainloading article on the wiki?
I did not, and that was my downfall ^^

After switching out the files, it was an immediate success!

Thanks for the help.
Hmm I’m a little confused, but from what I can make out it almost sounds like a permissions issue. Have you checked the folder permissions and ownership?

Also, is it actually a storage node? I don’t use any nodes other than the default, but my understanding is that storage nodes are stripped down, but actual installations of FOG which point back to the master server – more than just a network drive.
the thing is - old computer running ubuntu with fog - hd only 160G
i have networkdrive with 2Tb which i want to use as main storage for the images
i do not seem to get the settings of the storage node of the networkdrive correct in fog -keep getting connection failed
with ubuntu i can go write and read on networkdrive but not with fog

I’ve had this and it was bad RAM that was stopping the imaging process.

swap all RAM with other machines and see how you get on.

Interesting. I currently have it left as-is, since my organization typically doesn’t use quick imaging (we either have scheduled multicasts, or we use full host registration and inventory as new computers come in), but this is definitely good to know. Thanks for looking into it!
