If you have an ATI/AMD graphics card in your computer, try setting “nomodeset” under “Host Kernel Arguments” in Host Management.

• Use of FOG for Linux-based Client Imaging?

I know FOG supports Linux images, however, you have to upload the image by using the Raw image option (not sure about the multipartition option), and if my memory recalls, FOG only supports Ext2/3.

There’s a good chance that most potential employers wont have heard of fog, however the skills associated with fog/deployment are likely to be very beneficial.
Explaining that you can switch to an open source deployment solution from an existing (potentially expensive) deployment solution and at the same time probably increase the speed at which machines can be deployed.
If you’re primarily a Windows technician, having some basic Linux skills can help career prospects too.
In both my previous and current role, I’ve switched the organisation away from slow, expensive commercial solutions to Fog and everyone has been pleased with the results.

I have this working now in a fashion, see what you think, thoughts would be good

All fog images need to be Multiple Partition Non Re Size. Give you the MBR file which is essential. Use this command to load the mbr onto target disk sudo dd if=/pathtoimages/d1.mbr of=/dev/sda The disk now has the exact layout of the cloned disk about to be imaged. Load image files over the top of the partitions needing imaging. e.g. (win 7 machnie)

after MBR loading disk will have say dev/sda1 (reserved) and dev/sda2. Just load images d1p1 over sda1 and d1p2 over sda2.

Note. Resize in gparted will force a chkdsk in windows…if you leave resize till in windows no force check disk on first boot.

Tested with 7 , vista and XP images. All working.
7 looped a couple of time with the black and white boot manager window before then settling down and installing. Not sure why? But tested 3 or 4 times and it only happens once after loading.

FOG does not like an IP change as you noted. What about running FOG in a VM? Virtualbox works well, and is free. Personally I use VMware Workstation since it integrates into my ESXi Servers, but a VM would be a much easier solution rather than trying to get a dual booting working well.

Short answer: No

Long answer: It has not ceased development, but FOG does not update like regular programs. .33 is a complete rewrite of the code so it’s taking some time. The beta is out that you can download to test out the latest code. What we hope for is users to test the .33 beta and report bugs they come across in the forums. Once bugs are reported, the developers can review the bug posted and will be worked in the official release. Unfortunately, there is no official timeline for the release, but by all means, try the beta and post any bugs you may find.

You will also find that members on this forum are very helpful on a wide variety of issues that you may come across. We also have a wiki setup that covers a lot of ground from basic setup, how-to guides, and a wide variety of information relating to FOG.

We run 50 sites with FOG, and do them as standalone, but with special scripts.

I’ve modified FOG to automatically deploy machine specific drivers post boot, and we sync those driver repositories, and our standard image using rsync.

FOG is so easy to build that it’s no big deal to deploy it everywhere on a VM.

To answer your question… “yes” but also possibly “no”

It all really depends on what you are attempting to use fog for in conjunction with WDS and how your network is segmented.

Long story short, in plain terms you can have only one DHCP server that controls or “points” to PXE that must be either FOG or WDS, not both.

You could use WDS for imaging and the fog client for software management, inventory, etc.

Or the reverse could be true and have WDS (if there is a client for it) do the management and image with fog.

Hope this answers your questions for you.

Thank you for your answer.
Just to not make a mistake, I have a hundred PCs running Windows XP, but we have to make a master model there in Windows 7.
We want to learn Windows 7 in OS field in anticipation of relocation.
No problem?

I don’t know if I can help you with my experience, But instead of image all computers every day to have the same system I would prefer use Deep Freeze software and maintain windows intact on on reboot. It’s very nice software if you know how to use it.
