I formatted the machine again, only this time I created the partitions before sending install direct. In this way it worked.

@Junkhacker I tried to build a custom USB boot drive for FOG a while back using several potential methods. I fear I simply just don’t know enough about the technologies and projects I was trying to use to get them to work right.

Simply using an image prepared by someone else WOULD WORK - but I’d really like to make my own.

@Uncle-Frank Thank you for the link!

    Success on all fronts.

I have successfully created a generalized virtual server running CentOS 7.1 with FOG Build 4820. I can dump an image of it onto any hardware we use, mobile, desktop or virtual and it works exactly as desired.

I like it so much I’m making it my new standard.

There were some new hoops to jump through, but the CentOS community and online documentation provided solutions using native commands and features.

I even succeeded with no issues whatsoever in converting my vm development fog from Debian8.2 to CentOS7.1 in about 15 minutes.

    I love slaying dragons. 😎

Probably CentOS 5.11 has a pretty old version of bash running which cannot handle regular expressions in condition clauses. I guess there is no easy solution to this but update your OS. Probably best if you can setup a new server for testing FOG and if you are happy with it you can still consider updating your existing OS.

I think the default is set to 10 minutes. You can update this time by editing the value (in seconds) in the Config.class.php.

It’s found in the svc_setting method of the Config class file.

You mean booting the KVM VM up with FOG and draw an image from it? I am not exactly sure about KVMs network boo abilities but I guess it should run without much trouble. I am doing exactly this with qemu here on my laptop to find issues. Way easier than having physical machines for testing around.

Because, the other installers did NOT require setting of the password. Arch and Redhat. I made a large move to commonize the installer so things were more or less presented the same way across the board.

@Uncle-Frank You’re amazing! What you posted is very similar to what I came up with in a thread, but I haven’t gotten around to testing it.

If you get dnsmasq to work with co-existence then you’re like… everyone’s hero… for real. Because if we can get a rock-solid dnsmasq config for all types of booting - then for 95% of fog setups out there, we’ve eliminated the need to change DHCP. Fog can then come with dnsmasq setup by default and it JUST WORK without further setup.

In my opinion, Linux DHCP is far superior to Windows DHCP… but dnsmasq would be the ultimate solution if we could just get it to work.

SVN will look a bit odd at first glance since its revision number no longer matches the current software revision that you will receive.

For example (numbers are made up for my time’s sake):
SVN shows rev 3899, installed FOG shows 4591. This is okay and normal now.

@rrjustin Look at here : https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/5204/script-fog-tools to decompress an image. I’ve build this tool to change level compression of a FOG image and update database depending the new compression.

Thanks @ch3i ! I’ll check it out and see how I can modify it to suit my needs, or if as Junkhacker stated the process may be easier to just virtualize the image again.

    @Junkhacker said:

in order to explore the files for recovery, all you’ll need to do is decompress the partition images and then mount them on a Linux computer. i’ve never done it myself because of how long it takes to decompress the files and how quickly i can just deploy the image and recover the files i need

Thanks for your support @Junkhacker , I’ll take this into consideration. I’d ideally like to test both methods but if virtualizing is the quickest solution, I’ll take your suggestion and keep using it.

@prince-xyryl I do not believe the built-in administrator account can be deleted, but you can disable it.

I am assuming you have something similar to this in your unattend file, correct?

    <AutoLogon> <Password> <Value>notmypw</Value> <PlainText>true</PlainText> </Password> <LogonCount>3</LogonCount> <Enabled>true</Enabled> <Username>administrator</Username> </AutoLogon>

If you remove that block when you run sysprep with the generalize switch it should not enable the administrator account. Just make sure you create your other account before hand.

If you need the administrator account after sysprep you can disable it with this command: net user administrator /active:no

@Wayne Workman, Yes it looks as though I will be rebuilding much of the network. I know all about documentation. That is a big part of when I come into a company, when I go in I am not contracted as a full time replacement. Usually as a consultant or cases like this to help them determine how thing should proceed into the future and/or hire a replacement. This is a special case as I am going to work with whoever gets hired to assist for a longer term in getting everything to a point that is manageable, and documentation is key. For this case I was just trying to make my job easier as the last tech had things setup pretty well and running rather smoothly. Too bad he didn’t value documentation.

yes, you can consider this solved. Thank you all for your help. You guys have been great. And I must say that FOG has come a long way since I started using it in ,29 (at least for my uses).

I’m just throwing this out there - but I know Tom recently created a plugin for the latest FOG Trunk that allows for customization of individual tasks… I’m not writing a WiKi just yet on it… but you might play with making a task that includes a DBAN wipe then Image.

    Ask @Tom-Elliott for details. 🙂
