@Wayne-Workman You better marry that girl, or I’m going to offer her a job up north (in snowy Michigan) in my group. 😆

I think there is something with the tasks pages. When I just sit on the tasks page the little popup 0 active tasks found is consuming about 8% cpu according to top. On my first test of this that 8% cpu task persisted even when I moved to another page. Then I was getting a session time out popup. Closing the browser and going back in still netted the session timeout. I had to actually log out for that session cookie to reset.

[Edit] After additional testing that 8% httpd process seems to be related to that popup message (i.e. tasks/session/loading/load failed) [/Edit]

Coming back to this topic, I mentioned that scripts could be built to make fog mobile. Well, a few of us here in the FOG community did just that.

      Here’s the project link:
      https://github.com/wayneworkman/FOGUpdateIP

This basically makes FOG 1.3.0 completely mobile, it allows the FOG server to receive a DHCP address, and then scripts automatically update FOG’s files, database, and automatically re-configure dnsmasq to work with the new IP.

@george1421 I’d like to work with you to get this side project to work with UEFI too, only problem is if we do that, maybe we need to include an actual dnsmasq binary for x86_64, and after the project installer installs dnsmasq, it just swaps out the binary file all sneaky like lol. At least until the current latest dnsmasq version is mainstream.

@Tom-Elliott The probably the easiest solution is to create a procedure (wiki page) that if you need to update your fog server you need to do:

Update the settings in the /opt/fog/.fogsettings Rerun the installer Update the IP address for the storage node on the FOG system where you changed the IP address Update the IP address on a any master storage node that may reference this FOG server Update the FOG_WEB_HOST value update the FOG_TFTP_HOST value

I can I’ll marked this as addressed (Solved), since its not a technical solution but a procedural one that resolves the issue.
[Edit] I would, but it appears I can no longer mark topics as solved[/Edit]

      Power consumption.
This Intel NUC consumes about 36 watts of power (about the same as a netbook). The 24x7x365 (yearly) expected cost of running this NUC is less than $32 USD in energy costs. A 52 watt laptop will cost about $45 USD per year. And finally an old desktop computer running for year continuously will cost abut $131 USD. While there isn’t a huge saving difference in consumed electricity, there is a difference. In the scope of the my brothers project it isn’t quite as important as the dentist’s office. Contains a standard x86 processor
While is isn’t specifically a requirement it makes it easier to use off the shelf pre bundled packages instead of having to cross compile packages for the target hardware (thinking Raspberry PI here). FOG should run on a PI because you can run linux on a PI without issue. Uses commodity hardware
The NUC uses off the shelf common bits for add on and expansion devices. There are no special device specific memory or storage modules that only work in device x or product y. Actually I for my business project I used an 8GB memory stick from a Dell e7440 and it worked without issue. NOTE: In regards to memory you MUST purchase DDR3L (low power 1.5v) memory. I made the mistake of ordering DDR3 (5.0v) memory once and it didn’t work. Kit of bits and bytes
The NUCs are classed as a kit computer. Intel provides the foundation hardware so you can purchase the amount of memory and disk storage you need for your project. If your project needs 2GB of ram and a 2TB hard drive you can purchase off the shelf components to meet these system requirements. Another thing to note is that the NUCs do not come with any OS license. Since we will be running FOG under linux, having a windows OEM license baked into the hardware costs of the NUCs is just a waste of money. The other hardware platforms I looked into all come with windows OEM licenses so it pushed the unit costs over the self imposed $200 limit. But conversly, if this project required a Windows OS license then having to purchase a reail license for the NUC would put the total unit cost in the same ballpark as the other hardware manufacturers offerings.

I’m not saying this is the only hardware that meets the requirements. But from a size and costing standpoint it is in line with the expectations.

I do have concerns about the NUCs. Can I deliver the image at a high enough bandwidth to the target computer to make this a viable option. My brother has to image 30 computers in 2 days and have enough time with the computers post deployment to ensure that they work as intended before the sales guys fly back to where ever they came. This is a big risk, but technically FOG should be able to lay the image onto the target computer in 6 to 8 minutes (I can do it in about 4 minutes with my production servers). Once the image is on the laptop FOG is out of the picture (in this case we will not be loading the FOG client so no interaction is needed by FOG once the image is on the computer). For the dentist office, speed is not important at all.

True that, George. I was just surprised, as I had a few different USB-to-Ethernet adapters provided to me at work and none of those would work, and many Google searches solidified the suggestion that there were only a few USB Ethernet chipsets (chip manufacturers, chip-somethings, whatever) which were supported by PXE.

The search was made more difficult in that even in the last few years (2016-present) people seem to continue to prefer Legacy booting over UEFI. If I ever decide to get the other device, I’ll let you know how it works so it can also be added to the list, if that’s something you guys are keeping up.

@george1421 I do understand your intend to emulate PXE booting as close as possible. This is fine. I was just suggesting that it can be cut down by a fair bit. Right now I can’t see a reason why we would abandon loading default.ipxe straight away.

If you like you can edit your initial post and add this as a second step. Like, if loading iPXE worked for you, try loading default.ipxe to straighten things up. This is no have to!

@george1421 Room number (or room name) is most of time in group. That was my point. If you ask group before name (I know it’s stupid), you will be able to find out name I need using concatenation of the group name and a split on other computer in group taking the max of “name” less “group”.

New Host Name = Group Name + (max (Group Name removed from the list of other computer in group))

I don’t know if you understand me… lol
Something like this if name is “create” during registration.
Other way is just rename every host in group during registration base on registration date. Oldest get the lowest number.

I think we both like geeking ! lol

@zingaro TBH I have never tried in uefi mode.

As for your note: if these are dell computers, when in uefi mode you need to enable the uefi network stack (on the network page) in the firmware. I assume other OS will have similar options. On the boot options, it will only show valid uefi boot sources so you do need to enable the uefi network stack for that option to show up.

Your MDT boot image should contain the uefi boot kernel. In my case we use VMWare and boot our target computers directly from the mdt iso in uefi mode. They boot without an issue, but again I’m not sending the iso image across the network with pxe.

I can confirm uefi booting via pxe works with these instructions tomorrow since I’m out of the office today for training.

The only reason I visit the home page is for two things - the storage pie chart and bandwidth. That’s just me though.

I’m glad to see this improvement made - it’ll make FOG work a lot better on older lower powered systems.

@george1421 I will earn you that I did not update the package installation quite yet and I do plan to do this. Basically I just made it so storage nodes install the same way as normal mode does but I did not add the package installation or the same configuration checks. That’s likely the issue with the error displayed but as you said this should not have an impact on the installation process.
