RE: Surface Pro 4
@Tom-Elliott Sorry the kernel is 4.10.1. In my DHCP policy, the 7156 is the file it points to. I can move to RC and try. I have an different upload running so I’ll try the RC in a bit.

Surface Pro 4
Hi Everyone,
I am unable to get a Surface pro 4 to quick image. I have the UEFI co-existence set up on my DHCP server. I am running 1.3.5. I am using a Microsoft model 1663 usb to ethernet dongle to connect. I have used a powered USB hub as well to no avail. Please see the below picture. I am able to get to the fog menu but it fails at this point.
Note: I have successfully imaged surfaces in the past with the same setup. Kernel is latest
Thanks

RE: Graph showing 1 host queued but nothing in task management
@Wayne-Workman Fixed, thanks! I see you recently added a couple of new queries in the cleanup commands. Is there a way to make all of this into a script? I hate copy pasting the lines.

RE: Help a noob with Compression
@george1421 Ah ok. I think I may be fine with the i5 and 8GB of ram in that model, but I do have a Optiplex 780 image that I can improve by lowering the compression then. Thanks for the tips!

RE: Help a noob with Compression
@Wayne-Workman @george1421 That is interesting. I have model specific images, so maybe I should leave the older devices on the old compression method. I started an upload for a Dell 5440 laptop with zstd just before I left on Friday. I am eager to test the deployment on Monday!

RE: Graph showing 1 host queued but nothing in task management
@Wayne-Workman I figured that was the fix, will do on Monday. Honestly should have tried that before posting.

Help a noob with Compression
Hi All,
I saw another thread where people are getting very good speeds with the zstd compression method. Can anyone explain how I can utilize this? I am currently using the default compression method and level. Would I need to re-upload images? -
Graph showing 1 host queued but nothing in task management
Hi everyone,
I am running 1.3.5 with the latest client. I suspect there is some “stuck” entry in the DB that is making the graph show 1 job queued. Not a huge deal, just an aesthetic thing. If you could point me in the right direction, I’d be grateful. Thanks!

RE: Screwed up fog.man.reg in init.xz
@george1421 I will most likely try post init scripts eventually for that reason. I saw your post on the other thread and it honestly looks easier than what I did lol. I’m burned out today, plus I just got the thing working
-
RE: Screwed up fog.man.reg in init.xz
@george1421 I use a script for auto updating to stable versions once a week. I added an
rsync -c
command to copy my init.xz to the /var/www/html/fog/service/ipxe folder based on checksum. It appears to work. I’ll let you guys know if I run into any trouble. -
RE: Screwed up fog.man.reg in init.xz
@george1421 That worked perfectly, thank you! So it is the way I want it. I don’t do RC’s for the time being because I need it to be stable, but when a new stable version comes out, I go for it. My question is will an upgrade replace my custom init?
-
RE: Screwed up fog.man.reg in init.xz
@george1421 I changed my mind on automatically saying yes to deploying an image. However, I still want an auto-yes for joining AD. I can’t seem to find where I would set the variable to force a yes. Would you guys take a peek at https://github.com/FOGProject/fogproject/blob/master/src/buildroot/package/fog/scripts/bin/fog.man.reg
and tell me where I can force this? Thanks, I’m lousy at coding. -
RE: Screwed up fog.man.reg in init.xz
Sorry for the double post, but I got the registration items I wanted to remove removed. My next task (if possible) is to change something so the “Would you like this host to join AD” and the “Would you like to deploy an image now” would be hidden as well but they should always be set to “yes”. If that makes any sense.

RE: Screwed up fog.man.reg in init.xz
Thanks, you guys rule. I’ll try again later, but for now, it is back to the default

Screwed up fog.man.reg in init.xz
Hey everyone,
I made a rash decision and ended up messing up the fog.man.reg file in my init.xz (no backup, I’m a moron) whilst trying to remove some superfluous options (like primary user). I know there is a way to do it using post init scripts, but I don’t even know what post init scripts areI guess I’d like to know my options. Is there a way to regenerate this file? Like running the install again?
Thanks!

RE: How big can Snapins be now?
@Tony-Ayre I thought site licenses are typically unlimited while volume licensing is the limited type?
Listen, I have 4 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, a high school, a community center, an administrative building, etc. all containing different software. I have at most 15 commonly used images that take up under 500GB of space. I use snapins for anything that fits between the size threshold. Anything bigger I make an image for. Do what you see fit, but in my opinion, snapins are not meant for large pieces of software. If you don’t agree, perhaps your current solution fits your needs better.

RE: How big can Snapins be now?
@Tony-Ayre said in How big can Snapins be now?:
Lets put it this way. I am now running IT for 6 schools and 3 nurseries. Each of those schools has a dozen PC types, with about 3 different roles for each. This number is likely to grow as more schools join our trust also.
So, to create a full image type for each machine with each role would be rather a lot of unnecessary work.
Instead, a single general image (containing the base level of software), combined with Snapins will reduce that work tremendously, along with the storage needs of images.
I know not everyone’s environment is the same. I figured I’d throw it out there just in case. After some thought, I also assume that you use an .msi for deployment of Smart Notebook, so the web based installer is probably out. As much as I figure you’d like to avoid it, .bat files may be your only bet. What are your network shares like?
I want to add one more thing: The way we make different images is to create a base or “student” image. We upload that and then base our other images off of it. For example, the “teacher” image is made by deploying the already uploaded student image to a pc, then simply installing the Smart Notebook software, and boom, re-upload as the teacher image. It’s a little time consuming at first, but don’t think you must build from scratch, though the non-standard models may make it a little more complex. If you don’t have sufficient storage, I guess that won’t work. I use 500GB of space for my images. Just a thought.
Like @Tom-Elliott said, if you have a Smart Notebook site license, throwing it on a general image won’t hurt. It could get messy, but you may be able to control icons with GPO’s.

Autocad
Adobe Creative Cloud
Smart NoteboolkWhich version of Smart notebook are you using? It is already installed on our teacher image. It’s not too bad, you just have to log in and repair the license. Another option is to use the web based installer, though I don’t know if you can do that silently. As of 16.2, the web installer is only 26 MB.
I guess I am missing the point, you guys want to use snapins. I understand that, but in my environment, we have model/scenario specific images with programs included in the images (we are pretty model standardized). If all else fails, you can do that.

RE: Random Hosts are added to New group
@Tom-Elliott I didn’t consider that. I had never done maintenance on the SQL stuff prior to this. Thanks for the info.
