If everything is working for you, i’d say just keep it the way it is. No need to fix it if it isn’t broke. The only reason you may want to upgrade the compatibility to level 10 is that you can up your hard drive space from 2TB to 62TB per drive. We needed to do this for a couple of our servers, but it’s rare that you would need a VM with that kind of space. But then again, you’d need VMWare Workstation or vSphere to edit it from there.

Now if they offered HA for 2 free ESXi servers, just for absolute basic redundancy, i’d be in thrilled. We are on a strong push to move our teams to VM’s instead of having actual boxes at their desk for testing.

In case anyone was reading this and hoping for an answer to making ubuntu 14.04 (Or any other distro really) Fog 0.33b svn updates easier, smoother, and automated even, I figured out how to do it and put it in a new thread linked below, enjoy 🙂
I am very much interested in this,
Is there a way to create subfolders in the pxe menu?
Such as:

System100-
W7x86
W7x64
W8x86
System 101-
Vista86x
Vista64x
W8.1x86
Interesting. I currently have it left as-is, since my organization typically doesn’t use quick imaging (we either have scheduled multicasts, or we use full host registration and inventory as new computers come in), but this is definitely good to know. Thanks for looking into it!

while i’m thinking about it, is there a way to find your config during the initial setup of FOG? It sure would be trying to track down all the IP’s used for setting it up if you can just pull up your initial config.

Well a mac address is individualistic, meaning it is unique to the board… this is why Fog uses it for tracking and cataloging.

We use the DMI info and register our computer names based off of the serial number, as well as name them in AD based off the serial #.

Most deployment solutions use the mac address, and truth-be-told I still think that this is the best way. Acronis / Altiris / etc. all use Mac addresses as the single unified primary method of identification. >_<

I really don’t know of a way around what you are trying to do, other than what you’ve already listed above.

It depends on your hardware and how your BIOS is configured.

Intel have ‘vPro’ which allows you to do what you want. (remotely change boot order)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Active_Management_Technology#Using_Intel_AMT
Remote boot the PC by remotely redirecting the PC’s boot process, causing it to boot from a different image, such as a network share, bootable CD-ROM or DVD, remediation drive, or other boot device.[1][7] This feature supports remote booting a PC that has a corrupted or missing OS.
Have you recompiled and replaced hostnamechange.dll on your image? That step seems to elude many folks.
