Dell OptiPlex 780 will not upload image

[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]Hey guys,[/COLOR][/FONT][FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]I just started using Fog today and am trying to upload my first image.[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]The Dell box is a OptiPlex 780 running Windows 7 64bit.[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]It has a ATI Radeon HD 3450 Graphics Card and a Intel 82567LM-3 Gigabit NIC.[/COLOR][/FONT][FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]I have it booting via PXE and am able to select “Preform Full Host Registration and Inventory” from the Fog menu.[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]I have installed the Fog Service and have completed the FogPrep.[/COLOR][/FONT][FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]After the Host Inventory starts I get the following errors…[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414][3.884261] tps65818L no chip?[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414][4.262476] acpiphp_ibm: ibm_acpiphp_init: acpi_walk_namespace failed[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414][4.262856] Could not find Carillo ranch MCH device.[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414][4.263894] uvesafb: failed to execute /sbin/v86d[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414][4.263121] uvesafb: make sure that the v86d helper is installed and executable[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414][4.263158] uvesafb: Getting VBE info block failed (eax=8x4f88, err=-2)[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414][4.263178] uvesafb: vbe_init() failed with -22[/COLOR][/FONT][FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]This screen will display for about 3 minutes and then I get a screen of black and white lines like static.[/COLOR][/FONT]
[FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414](I have attached two screen shots)[/COLOR][/FONT][FONT=Tahoma][COLOR=#141414]I did complete a successful upload and deploy on an older Dell GX280 that worked perfectly.[/COLOR][/FONT]
I would assume this has something to do with the graphics card in the 780. I have about 90 of these boxes to reimage and would love to start using Fog.

I’ve got Dell Optiplex 780’s and they works fine with the Kernel-3.2.4.core kernel available at [URL=‘http://http://sourceforge.net/projects/freeghost/files/Kernels/’]http://sourceforge.net/projects/freeghost/files/Kernels/[/URL]
Our Optiplex 990’s pause at that “[FONT=Tahoma]vbe_init() failed with -22” for a minute or so but, work fine otherwise. There’s probably some use flags I could pass to eliminate that or a different kernel but, so far the 3.2.4 core works with all the Optiplex’s we tested on FWIW[/FONT] -

Thanks for the help. I downloaded and tried kernel 3.2.4 and 3.3.3 but it did not help.
I did remove the ATI graphics card and just used the onboard and it worked just fine on the 780. I was able to upload the image and am now deploying it to a different 780 without removing the ATI card. I’m seeing the same errors and the “static screen” but the progress on the Fog dashboard says it’s running.
So whenever it says it’s finished and I confirm that it worked, I can then figure out how to deploy the image to all 90 Pc’s.

We had an issue with the 780’s hanging at “Restarting system” after imaging that went away when we added “[B]reboot=bios[/B]” to [B]Other Information > FOG Settings > General Settings > FOG_KERNEL_ARGS[/B] (or just for that host or group in “[B]Host Kernel[/B]”). Since you’re not having that problem I feel like I gotta revisit it again. -
I ran into this problem myself. I work for a school district and we have nothing but Optiplex systems. Basically this problem occurs on any devices that use an ATI/AMD graphics card. Like you said above, using the on board graphics (Intel) work just fine. Below is a post I made on here awhile ago which has resolved a lot of these snow screen issues for people.Basically I created my own kernel to see if it would fix these video issues and it has. Ive been using it to deploy over 1000s or optiplex PCs in my district and also resolves problems with PCs using VGA or DVI ports.

Good Morning Eric,Could you please provide me some information what parameters did you choice by creating the Kernel for OptiPlex PCs?
The problem was exactly the same like it’s showing on your print screen. I create yesterday the Kernel with the version Linux-3.4 and choice all default values not to waste to much time us I work yesterday about 9.5 hours. Could you please provide me the information that you choice to make the PXE boot starting properly with ATI graphic cards installed in the PC?Thank you in advance.

You could try adding the kernel argument nomodeset, this has fixed the same display issues we had with ATI cards

I used the kernel you posted on scatteredspace and I was able to register my Dell Optiplex 990s with the AMD Radeon HD6540 Video Card. At this point when I try to create the image it creates 3 very small image files. The status bars that display when building the image just quickly flash by. Are there any parameters I need to set in fog or anything else I should do when I upload an image from the Optiplex 990? Thanks. -

I didn’t have to set any parameters that I can remember. However, I didn’t set much of the Fog back end up so I could be missing something. When I created my image over the summer I did the following:
(I’m using Fog .32)
- Went to image managment and created a default x86 Windows 7 Master Image
- Image type was set to Multiple Partition Image - Single Disk (Not Re sizable)
In Windows:
- I put the PC in audit mode after a clean install
- Made my changes the PC
- Used Windows CMD PNPUtil to add all the drivers for every Optiplex I have directly into the image
- Sysprep’ed the PC using the following CMD : Sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /shutdown /Unattend:unattend-X86.xml
Must create an unattend file using MS tools and then navigate to C:\Windows\system32\sysprep
After Sysprep I loaded Gparted: [url]http://gparted.sourceforge.net/[/url]
- After the PC shuts down I reboot it and load Gparted immediately.
- I shrink the partition to its smallest possible size to so that the image fits on all available hard drive sizes
- Once the partition is shrunk I reboot and let scandisk complete. After scandisk completes the PC reboots
- Once PXE loads I register the PC and have it upload its Image to Fog
When the PC reboots I have a script that runs that loads any drivers that PNPutil.exe could not handle and use diskpart.exe extendvol to expand the hard drive back to its full size. Ive also found in my experince that have the script delay the Fog service helps with it automatically joining the domain.

Once I was able to edit the kernel I simply added all the NICs and Video drivers available. I also know that there is a custom parameter that you can set to remove the snow screen issue in Fog but I cannot find the command or the forum post that mentioned it at this time.

Have you ever seen the can’t have partition outside the disk error when deploy windows 7 ? i get that error when deploying windows 7 on advance format drives

HI Eric, yup it was pretty neat, worked on my fog
by the way im not faimliar yet with Gparted, can you elaborate more on how to setup and configure this.
secondly, how can i create a script (or there’s available already?) or a snapin where can automatically joins to domain?

just to add on this, even though the screen is all noise, fog is still running, it is just not displaying properly because it doesn’t have video drivers for the system. If you do the quick image option and have that setup in fog, it will inventory the system and push the default image ( once you configure it in the web options).

I have this Same issue…
I just removed the Video card and used the onboard for the upload.
and for the Deployment, i just do a quick Image, change the settings on the Web GUI, and then image away…
It has the Screen all messed up but after 10 minutes or less its done, and works fine.

Take out the wireless card and try it again. It’s fighting with the video card for IRQ assignment. I had the same issue with getting Ubuntu 12.04 on a midrange model of Acer.
