Two forum related questions
-
Can we somehow add a template for forum posts. We’d be able to save a lot of asking questions about OS/FOG version and stuff like that. Perfect would be a pre filled text in the compose text box. Or some kind of forum rules for all the new people who find the forum through the website. As visible as possible - maybe in the forum front page? Just a few ideas.
And second… didn’t we have a category for forum related things like this? I cannot find it. Searching for posts that I knew should be in that category can still be found by the search but are somehow gone, like this one: https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/6521/search-box-opens-two-tabs-instead-of-one
What should go into the template?
- FOG version (see in the blue cloud on the web interface or in the installer logs)
- server OS / version
- image settings like image type + OS ID
- …
- Hints on where to find other valuable information (as well pointing people to possibly fix the issue themselves):
- Apache error logs (debian/ubuntu: /var/log/apache2/error.log, centos/fedora/rhel: /var/log/httpd/error_log)
- Install logs (fogproject/bin/error_logs)
-
We disabled the Forum issues category because we have been on v1.0.3 of Nodebb for the past couple months without any major issues.
-
Would it hurt to enable it again so the old posts are not gone to nirvana?
Still wondering of a way to make people post most of their details in the initial question so we don’t have to ask over and over again!

julianlam replied to my issue:
Hey there Wayne, you’ll want to use nodebb-plugin-canned-responses
-
Bumping this, there is a plugin for NodeBB called
nodebb-plugin-canned-responses
-
-
Is there anything I can do to help getting this up? I’d love to see if we can improve the questions and therefore response quality/time with a suitable post template…
-
We have canned responses installed (I skipped the compatibility checks). However, the canned responses are made per-user. As of now, we can’t make default ones for everyone.
-
We really only need a template for opening thread posts.
-
The NodeBB people updated the canned responses plugin so that it’s compatible with the latest version of NodeBB, however as it currently stands the plugin doesn’t do what we would like, so I’ve asked for a feature:

Thanks @Wayne-Workman for following up on this! I think this is really worth it…
Should we start collection the questions/instructions? Just edit my the OP or post here in case you are not allowed to edit other people’s posts.

@Moderators This is another great example of why I think we should have a template for forum posts - better sooner than later. I hit the nail on the head by pure luck this time. Would be way easier if people just post the most important information straight away every time.
-
Hey folks! Why is no one interested in this? We see 50+ updated/new posts (probably 100+ messages) per day in the forums lately. Why not saving some time and a lot of questions if we can make most people post the important details right away?
-
@Sebastian-Roth The canned responses, I think you’re heading toward, don’t provide what you’re asking. You’re wanting people to post forum topics that basically require using a template before it can be properly posted?
Just trying to understand.
The canned responses that are available or more of a simple press and send kind of system which might help, but still can leave most of our common questions unanswered.
If we need to “track” something I think a more proper bug reporting tool would be handy, but it’s a lot to try to manage and implement when we are really a very small team of people with quite literally little to no $ flow.

I’ve already asked for a feature to do this:
https://github.com/julianlam/nodebb-plugin-canned-responses/issues/3The developer has asked a question for clarification, I’ve already responded.

So what are our common questions that will still be unanswered you think? I guess it’s just a matter of putting all those into the canned responses “template”. I don’t think every user will fill in all the details and we still need to ask questions. But on the other hand a lot of people will happily provide as much information as they can straight from the start if they’d knew what we need to know. So the better questions we have in the “template” the better it will be. Please start adding questions to th OP!
@Wayne-Workman Thanks heaps for keeping in contact with Julian on this!
