Unexpected/unprompted Laptop Restart (FOG imaged laptop)
-
Hi Everyone,
I am wondering if anyone can assist or has any idea as to why a fellow employee’s laptop is randomly rebooting. He will be working, laptop reboots, and a FOG log is then created and placed in his
The first sign of this happened last week. Since then I removed his laptop from host management and it persist to keep happening.
As described by the end-user…
“My laptop randomly shuts down while I’m working on it. There does not appear to be any pattern to the shutdown except that it is random. The problem still persist. My laptop just shutdown while I was in a zoom meeting. Here is the fog log.”
Below is the log output:

My guess, and I’m only speaking with some experience, Auto Logout. Disable it. Windows 7 and up with the legacy client did not have a good mechanism to track the last activity times.
-
It’s also possible that this isn’t FOG related at all.
It could be heat related, for example - which users normally describe as a random problem. The user is using a laptop after all, which are notorious for getting gunk built up inside the fan/radiator assembly.
Do let us know what you find though, and also be aware that we have ceased development on the legacy fog client (what your using) because we have a new FOG Client that will roll out with FOG 1.3.0 which is a lot better than the old one.

To me the log does not look like the laptop is being shutdown by the FOG client. The GreenFOG module would shutdown but on a normal schedule I’d say. TaskReboot could be kind of random but would reboot instead of shutting down.
But to make sure you could just uninstall the FOG client and see if the laptop still keeps shutting down. -
@Sebastian-Roth autologout on the legacy client also causes the “random” reboot. I’ll even guess the reboot actually happens every so many minutes like clock work after the user signs in.
The fog.log typically is very short in size and gets overwritten. It’s most likely the log had started over causing the lack of any other potentially relevant info being given to us.
