Cannot Install Fog on new Ubuntu 16.04 Server

I built a new Ubuntu 16.04 Server VM on XenCenter 6.5, installed XenTools, changed IP to static, and updated system to latest patch level.

I try to install Fog using the following commands:

sudo -i
cd /opt/
git clone https://github.com/fogproject/fogproject.git fog_stable/
reboot now

sudo -i
cd /opt/fog_stable/bin
./installfog.sh

The install starts and then ends with Adding repository if needed…Failed!

I found some information on how to disable the Repository
I edited the line 623 and put a # in front of errorStat on the following file /opt/fog_stable/lib/common/functions.sh

I ran the install again, this time it doesn’t faill but bypasses and keeps installing. It goes great until it asks me if the MySQL password is blank. At first I said Y and it crapped out. I retried everything again and said N, entered the password, confirmed password, and it craps out again. This time, on Stopping Web Service…Failed!

Also, if it helps, I am just trying to build a new Fog for imaging Win10 PC’s. If you know a better way or if there is something else I can do, please let me know.

@Sebastian-Roth Thank you for all your help. Based off of what you found in your previous post, it looks like our WebFilter is blocking the connection. I was able to get to these sites because I am an authenticated user but the Ubuntu server is unauthenticated. I changed it to be able to allow the unauthenticated connection and now it is installing with zero issues. Thank you again for your help in finding out what the issue was.

If you look in the same directory as the installfog.sh script. There should be a directory like logs or error logs. Inside that directory is the error logs. See if they give you a bit more details on which repo is having issues.

Secondly 16.04 is on the upper end of middle age. Why didn’t you go with 18.04 or Centos 7? Don’t get me wrong 16.04 is still supported by FOG, its just not the latest.

As for other solutions to deploy windows 10. It depends on a few factors. 1. How many deploys will you do a week/month? 2. How fast do you need to deploy an image? (FOG about 15 minutes ready to move to use for a FAT Windows image with an ~4 minute image push, or MDT with about a 1.5hr image deploy ready to move to user) 3. What is your budget to do this?

There are a lot of solutions out there you just need to find the right mix for your organization.

@george1421 Hi George, thank you for your reply. I work for a company that has used Fog since 2012. We were still on 1.2.0, doing Windows 7 images every now and then or when we needed to pump out a few new workstations. Recently we received new workstations that could not be reverted back to Win7 so we need to keep them on Win10. This will require a new Ubuntu Server and Fog version. I had to come up with a quick solution so I found an article on how to build one, and tried it out. If you have a better way, I will gladly try it. I found the error logs,

@SBrady Well either way, review the error log files to see if they give us a clue. We did find that some of the packages have changed name, specifically the database package name went from all lower case to mixed case. Linux is exact so case IS imPortant, even in package names.

@george1421 Here are the logs, I am not sure what to look for. If there is anything else you need from me, please let me know. I can try again and do a fresh install from a snapshot since I was trying different things with this install and installed a couple times over, so some stuff was already installed. Thank you

@Developers can you explain this. In the error log it looks like its trying to install php7.0 and php7.1 PHP7.1 is failing but the very last line of the log look like it thinks php-fpm7.1 is installed and tries to stop it. After that the installer stops.

@SBrady @george1421 I see several issues in the log that make me think there is something “wrong” with your internet connection. The installer tries to add software repositories to be able to install PHP 7.0 but this fails in various ways:

I’m able to ping google.com and use SSH. The only thing I can think of is when I create the VM I do not add the NIC until after I install Ubuntu. I can try to do a clean install and add the NIC sooner if that helps.

Shouldn’t make a difference as long as you have the NIC ready and configured before running the FOG installer.

My guess is that your firewall or proxy doesn’t allow the VM to connect to the keyservers. I am not exactly sure but I think some high port is used for that (not HTTP/HTTPS). Or your ISP is forcing your internet traffic to go through some kind of transparent/invisible proxy server?!

You might need to manually install curl before that. sudo apt-get install curl

If you get a proper output from the curl command you might want to manually add the apt key:

@SBrady Well, just using a more up to date Ubuntu might help. Ubuntu 18.04 comes with a newer PHP version in the official software repos and those ought to install without an issue if you add the manual #errorStat $? fix.

Other than that it would still be worth investigating why this is not properly working in your environment. When I run the same command I get this:

But as we see in your output it says: Redirecting you to Web Security Gateway. and I am sure this is causing the problem! Do you know who is ruinning this web security gateway? Should be on IP 172.27.72.27… It’s within a local subnet IP range and I guess this might be run by your IT Sec department.

@Sebastian-Roth Thank you for all your help. Based off of what you found in your previous post, it looks like our WebFilter is blocking the connection. I was able to get to these sites because I am an authenticated user but the Ubuntu server is unauthenticated. I changed it to be able to allow the unauthenticated connection and now it is installing with zero issues. Thank you again for your help in finding out what the issue was.
