FOG 1.5.0 RC 10

[Moderator Note] Lets make sure this thread doesn’t devolve into something we would not rather see. I can understand both sides but I see this thread heading towards not really adding value.

The developers are working behind the scenes on improving 1.5.0RC11’s UI and trying to map out some tough upcoming issues. The release schedule they were on for the last 2 years was necessary to push fog from 1.2.0 to now but it is really an unsustainable release cycle since FOG is not anyone’s primary job and we all have families and other obligations.

At this point I’m going to lock this thread so we can focus on what is important here. We need to advance FOG’s capabilities and support those who may be having issues with what has been created.

So, just be clear: you guys don’t have a communications problem; it’s just that the whole world isn’t listening to you? Is that what you’re saying?

Quite frankly, it’s been a long time since I last got such an impudent comment. I spend most of my time at breakfast ruminating and I am over it. Such comments make me think about why I spend my free time working on the FOG project. I do this because I enjoy digging into problems. I am not here to discuss “if FOG is dead just because there hasn’t been a news post in the last two and a half months”. I myself won’t spend anymore time on such useless discussions!

Honestly, if someone is new to FOG or isn’t new to FOG but only has a passing interest, what do you think they’re going to go off? They’re not going to think, “Wonder what Tom Elliot is up to?” and then go scour the forums for your posts.

There is no need to follow anyone in the forums. New posts are answered daily and it’s pretty obvious without following Tom or anyone else.

I don’t really see the issue here. There is tons of products that only have a single update a year or fewer. People seem to expect FOG to pump out updates on a daily basis.

    crontab -e
    0 0 * * * echo "FOG is not Dead…"
    0 10 * * * echo "FOG is not Dead by the way…"
    0 30 * * * echo “did you know…FOG is not Dead”

    @loosus456

I agree with your criticism that people who are new would not intuitively know how to keep up with the latest progress of FOG outside of the news site. The condescending tone of your responses though may deter people from openly receiving that feedback.

I’d like to bring your attention to the thread @Tom-Elliott made (https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/11327/fog-activity-status).

If anybody would like to see an increase in developers donating their time to making this free software, consider donating either with monetary support or by spending personal time to help with development.

We, as volunteers, do have limited time. Often, we can get caught up in the backlog of tickets that need to be completed for the next release to forego making news posting keeping people apprised of our work and status. We are often faced with the choice of spending our few free hours all on a status update, or on development. This type of behavior is common with many open source projects, and does cause some issues, as you have correctly pointed out. Unfortunately, given our limited manpower and available time to donate, I do not see this changing. If you would like to see that change, consider donating a couple hours every week: checking in with us, the developers, finding out what we are working on, and writing up something for us to post. Open source projects are driven by people donating their time to fix something they think can be improved, and we are no exception.

    Cheers,
    Joe

@loosus456 no. Nothing new has been pushed out yet. We haven’t made an RC 11, and haven’t had anything to report on for the news. We are doing work within GitHub but we don’t push to public directly until we are fairly confident the current work is okay to be tested more publicly.

  • @tom-elliott Honestly, if someone is new to FOG or isn’t new to FOG but only has a passing interest, what do you think they’re going to go off? They’re not going to think, “Wonder what Tom Elliot is up to?” and then go scour the forums for your posts. They don’t know you from Adam. They’re not going to your Github page. They’re not keeping tabs on how many moderators are answering technical questions.

  • Senior Developer

@loosus456 you are saying we aren’t communicating. What is it that you think will make it so people don’t think this? This is what I mean by you “expecting”. I have no expectations and simply reply to posts like this so people do know we aren’t “dead”. I don’t know what we can do to make people think we are still active.

  • Just went to the news page: https://news.fogproject.org/

The last update I see is from November 7, 2017. Are there supposed to be updates after that?

  • @tom-elliott Where did I say I expect anything? What are you expecting? People not to think FOG is dead every few months?

  • Senior Developer

@loosus456 what communication are you expecting? We answer questions and help address bugs when we can. When a new rc is to be released, we put it on the news site. I’m not saying something couldn’t be improved but I don’t know what it is you’re expecting.

  • @sebastian-roth So, just be clear: you guys don’t have a communications problem; it’s just that the whole world isn’t listening to you? Is that what you’re saying?

But you can’t blame people for thinking that it’s dead when there is zero communication for over two months.

This is just not fair! Why would we still answer questions on the forums on a daily basis if this project would be dead?! Can’t believe you just said that. About the rest see Tom’s announcement…

FOG lives, evolves and we can all be grateful for this free, easy and reliable method of cloning. That has to be said.

  • This isn’t the first time people have thought FOG is dead. I think everyone understands that FOG is a volunteer project run by the generosity of many people.

But you can’t blame people for thinking that it’s dead when there is zero communication for over two months. And if the folks working on FOG are fine with the world thinking it’s dead, keep doing what you’re doing. :-)

@bob-henderson (Pssst… I had a peek at some of the ui improvements. All I can say is, awesome!! )

  • Senior Developer

@Bob-Henderson you’d be correct :). We’re working on some major improvements, especially for those users with many hosts and slow web UIs! We’ll hopefully be able to post soon about the status, and about the changes coming, after the work is done and tested of course!

(To give you an idea, the changes let us handle 10k+ hosts on List All without any significant speed impact or excessive ram usage)

  • @trialanderror Incorrect.

The last RC was released in early November. November,December, and January are usually development wastelands for MOST Products, due to the large amounts of holidays, outside of work obligations, and then inside of work end of year stuff that needs to get done.

Developers here are working, as always, as they can with the time allowed. I’d expect some more news in the coming weeks, but that is nothing more than a gut feeling I personally have vs having anything to go on.

As this is a opensource project, if you’d like to see more development, you are more than welcome to jump in and try to fix open issues!
