Replicating the Storage Node itself
-
I have a Storage Node VM that works correctly, takes replications and spits out images as needed.
My questions: If I use the cloning feature of the hypervisor and make sure that things like hostname and TCP/IP stuff is changed, can I add the newly cloned Storage Node to the main FOG server using the same credentials as the “parent” Storage Node or is there some unique ID that must be respected. The SN is on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and the main server is on Ubuntu 15.10

I think it might work… give it a try and let us know? Worst thing that could happen is it doesn’t work.

Cloned the Storage Node using VirtualBox’s cloning feature. Changed the TCP/IP info and plugged in the same password into the main FOG and it worked. Storage Node was added and I could see it in the Dashboard (well I get the failed to connect error, but I can click on the link and get the info on the Node.) There was a power outage that corrupted the VHD for the clone, so I’ll try cloning it again and see if it serves image download requests

@iyoung Thanks for following up! Sounds like this project has a lot of potential to work!

Did you get this to work?
Im looking to clone a storage node. change the name and IP and then add it to the fog server?
Thanks

@Duncan Read the thread please.

I got it working, cloned the 1st storage node, changed the host name and IP and added it to the server.
Tested and all working
Saved me a lot of time cloning.

Sorry about the last response @Duncan. I clone after installing FOG in SN mode, but before adding it to the main server. I had written a little guide for cloning, that covered everything from Fog setting to SSH logins, but of course I can’t find it.
The biggest things you need to change after cloning are:
1: IP address
2: MAC address
3: Hostname (both /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname)
4: /opt/fog/.fogsettings (change the ip address)
5: SSH configuration (If you are connecting over SSH)after which you can rerun the FOGinstallerfolder/bin/installfog.sh. Then add it the server and your good to go.

Hey @Wayne-Workman would you like me to right up a step by step guide on cloning Storage Nodes for the wiki?
-
@iyoung Yes, and please include steps for the interface’s uuid. That’s the only thing I’m seeing missing. See here: http://www.itechlounge.net/2014/03/linux-how-to-generate-uuid-for-network-interface-on-rhelcentos/

@Wayne-Workman I’m using Ubuntu Server, so I won’t be able to include screen shots of that part, which looks to be RH Linux thing. I’ll just add the text and cite the article.

Hey @Wayne-Workman I finally have the how-to done. How do you want it, should I upload it in a forum post?

@iyoung Yes. Make a new thread, put it in tutorials.
