Computer wont boot from hard drive after PXE from FOG
-
We just upgraded to FOG 1.2. The computers boot to the FOG PXE screen then when they go to boot from hard drive the screen goes black the cursor flashes in the upper left hand corner and nothing happens. The computers are DELL and we can press F12 to go to the boot menu and then we can select the hard disk and it will boot.
Is there a way we can tell fog where the boot disk is?
Thanks,
-
Only guess I have would be the Boot Exit type. You can change from Sanboot to exit or grub in the FOG Settings->Boot Settings

Here is the install.log
I have searched around and not found anything yet . These machines are now telling me BOOTMGR is missing when it goes to booting from hardisk. I have other machines that are working.

I’ve seen issues with some Dell laptops either because they are running an old bios, the E6410’s with bios rev A4 was recently an issue for me. Sometimes the system won’t load the pxe menu at all, and other times they just do not like to reboot.
In the fog configuration tab, to go fog settings, for the FOG_BOOT_EXIT_TYPE, there are three options try the grub or exit option as Tom Suggested. If your still having trouble try downloading an additional PXE boot image, save it as a custom option bzimage###. then go to your system inventory and set the machine to use a custom boot loader, fog/kernel/bzimage###. Then make sure that you delete the pending task, so that it picks up the custom kernel when it creates the new task.
you can look here http://www.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/WorkingDevices to see if your system is on the list and what kernels have been tested to work with it

By changing the FOG_BOOT_EXIT_TYPE from sanboot to exit and back to sanboot in the version 1.2 of FOG I was able to get our DELL Precision T1600’s to work. The DELL Optiplex XE still say BOOTMGR is missing. Where is a good place to download an additional PXE boot image
-
set the exit type to grub and leave it there. report back if that doesn’t solve your problem
-
With grub as the FOG_BOOT_EXIT_TYPE it still says BOOTMGR is missing. It works with the old .32 version of FOG. Just since the upgrade to version 1.2 has it stopped working.
-
double check that the image type is set properly, after upgrading from .32 to 1.2 my existing win7 images changed to win 2000/win xp, and I had to manually set them back to Win 7. The issue might just be that simple.
Maybe its something from the migration process, I’m not really sure. maybe someone needs to take a look at that.
-
how well does exit type “exit” work for you?
-
Yes my images were set to win 2000/win xp. I had to change them all back to windows 7. It still didnt solve my problem. For some reason the new version of FOG doesnt like this model of DELL. I am thinking about adding an intel ethernet card and disabling the integrated broadcom.
-
Same problem with exit.
-
did you try downloading a different kernel? also check to see if there are bios updates for the XE
-
Havent tried a different kernel. It is on the lates bios. What is the best way to update the kernel?
-
How do you know what kernel you are currently using?
-
when you updated to 1.2 I believe it updates the default kernel, there are some newer ones you can download them from the fog configuration tab, there is an option for downloading kernels.
downloading an additional PXE boot image, save it as a custom option bzimage###. then go to your system inventory and set the machine to use a custom boot loader, fog/kernel/bzimage###. Then make sure that you delete the pending task, so that it picks up the custom kernel when it creates the new task. Since your other systems are working fine with the current default it would be best to test a different kernel without overwriting the current one.

-
this is not a kernel issue. it is a ipxe issue. updating the kernel will not help
-
We fixed this by runing startup repair with the windows 7 install disk. For some reason with fog .32 it was using the bootmanager from the fox pxe boot image.
-
Forgot to mention. Thank you very much for your help on this:):)
-
The start of computers to display FOG PXE Then when they go to boot from the hard disk goes black screen the cursor flashes in the upper left corner and nothing happens.
Someone has the solution to this problem
-
@alli
Yep,Make sure your network is good to go. In some cases you may also need to power down completely, and “cold” start the system.
First, check the network though. I actually saw this exact issue today. All other systems were perfectly fine, it was just this one system that had the issue. Replaced patch cable and restarted system. Everything succeeded.
