has anyone used the intel nuc with fog?

im new to this and have the fog server setup on a vm with kubuntu, using the latest stable fog server release. I can get a Dell Optiplex 9020 network boot into fog and image so i know it works, but i am struggling to even get the NUC to network boot and just gives me an error?? ive tried a suggestion about general network booting on another site about downgrading the bios to v028 but still nothing??

has anyone managed to get these to network boot so i can at least start to create an image. we use these NUCs all the time and would be a massive time saver getting this to work

cheers

Those support UEFI, which I think can only use ipxe.efi

To use that, I think that your DHCP option 067 needs changed, and you also need to make sure that ipxe.efi is in the /tftpboot directory.

If you want to stick to undionly.kpxe, you will probably have to disable secure boot, and enable all the legacy boot stuff, and tick any checkboxes for PXE.

But, be warned… Some have reported that doing this turns the NUC into a brick… see here:

Let us know how it goes, so we can update the hardware lists on the WiKi. Feel free to ask questions, that’s what this forum is all about.

Not personally but I know someone who has! AFIAK he uses Intel NUC D34010WYK

The thread Wayne pointed out doesn’t sound very promising. At least some people were able to pxe boot. Try different bios versions and double check all bios settings every time you up/downgrad the bios!

Web GUI issue? Please check apache error (debian/ubuntu: /var/log/apache2/error.log, centos/fedora/rhel: /var/log/httpd/error_log) and php-fpm log (/var/log/php*-fpm.log)

I’ve successfully used FOG on :

Intel NUC DBN2820FYK
Intel NUC D54250WYB

Programming the BIOS on either is tricky, especially for the first one. I used both in legacy mode.

For the first unit, after PXE boot/deployment, you MUST turn PXE boot OFF in the BIOS if you want it to ever boot properly again.

Even though both were used in Legacy mode, both still had to have the UEFI settings set. Frankly the BIOSes are bafflingly thought out in reverse and quite annoying.

Do you have WiKi access? You need to add that info into the hardware lists, and also explain the complications/solutions that need done. If you don’t, I can do it.

I just fogged a NUC5i5RYH
Didn’t even need to enter system settings. Out of the box it booted to nic first and worked.

Wow.
Could you check to see if the NUC is set for legacy boot?

already boxed it back up and gave it back to the coworker it belongs to, sorry.
i did drop an Ubuntu image on it, so ipxe/kernel/everything seemed to be compatible

Thanks all for your input.

sorry for late reply. mrs had emergency section at 26wks and baby is now in intensive care :-s

but Ive managed to get it to work, eventually…

even though they are all the same model and firmware, some worked, some didnt. after getting it boot via network and registering with fog it then decided not to boot to network again, via f12 (network boot) or by using netwook as 1st boot option. after a bit of digging and testing i managed to get it booting to network correctly with bios update WY0035.bio. the one installed was WY0021…

Hi,

I’m having the same problem here on BN2820FYKH. The first NUC I used to make the Primary Image worked fine and I was able to upload the image and use it. I’ve tried two more (I have 107) and both hang on iPXE initialing devices. The BIOS Settings are a copy, I’ve looked. What am I missing?

Best Regards

It’s working now. I can’t explain why this happens, but I’ve searched a lot in this forum and on another thread an user explained something related wiht NIC not being properly shutdown by Intel, so… What i’ve done in all NUCs is boot an LiveOS (Ubuntu for eg.) and after that restart to Network boot and it’s working. Already done 20 NUCs everything works, except Full Host Register (didn’t spent many time seing why)

If you can, a screen shot or picture of the errors during full host registration would be helpful.

I see the option. When I hit that option screen goes black. I will make a video tomorrow. As a work around I adjusted Quick Registration settings and done the job.

Awesome!!! I do remember the times when you had to properly shutdown the computer to be able to wake it up over LAN. And I’ve also see kind of recent PCs still having that issue. But I have never heard about machines not being able to PXE boot if not being shutdown properly! Thanks a lot for reporting this. I’ll add this to the wiki right now!
