Host-Management and Multicast
-
Hi
After using FOG for a while now there are some things i don’t like about the usability:
[]The Host-Management is ugly. We have about 200 clients and another 200 will be added. But we already have problems finding something. It would be nice to have a filter and make Folders.
[]Easy Multicast Image: If i want to deploy a Image on three or four computers i always have to creat a Multicast Image or make a group with these clients. The Problem is that with Multicast Image i have to manually power them on an join the session and the problem with making a group isn’t so practical. So my wish is that it would be possible to make a task and add the clients on the fog, so they will be started manualy.

Make it possible to make a task wich collects inventory and then upload/downloads the image. Because we have a lot of Importet hosts they are missing inventory so it would be nice if the inventory would be collectet with the first image task
These 3 improvements would be awesome.BTW: If i creat an Multicast Image with a Host Count of 5, i can just add a sixth client without problem. Is this a bug or not :D?

What version of FOG are you using?
Notes on the current development version (r3096)…
The current development version has better control over host-management, and a beautiful interface. It also has a very responsive filter for the host names.
I have no problems with quickly adding clients to a group, creating a multicast task, and then just turning on the machines. WOL works also with this, if you’ve got that enabled in your CMOS config.
The current development version does have a customizable boot menu. You can make the default boot item into a quick registration for any client that isn’t registered.
And, I don’t think that exceeding the host count is a bug.
I would highly recommend updating to the latest SVN.

Thanks for your reply, i’m on 3081 right now so i will update to check the host management.
But the rest of your solutions are just workarounds, i made this thread so i don0t have to use workaraounds anymore
-
What do you mean just workarounds?
-
How is making them a group not practical? WakeOnLan works too.
I’m lost
-
Inventory IS taken on EVERY tasking whether upload or downlod.
-
Making a group is not practical because i don’t want to make a group for 5 pc and delete it after the image task.
What i mean is, that it is possible to creat a download task and say that client 5, 3 and 9 should be in thtat task. No Group wich i have to make and delete. It isn’t a must have feature but would be nice
I just checked the inventory on some hosts, and there are really some with inventory data. The ones i checked before i made this thread, were empty. So i made a download task but the inventory was not collected. Tried again and then it worked.
Is there a known bug or am i incapableSo apprently i should have made some research befor posting three improvments because two are already there  But Folders in the Host-Management still would be practical.
BTW: Thanks for your work on FOG and the support your doing here on the forum, this is better than most companys i have to pay for any support

Normally, I image a Computer Lab or a class room altogether. Their in a group permanently.
However, there are times when I need to image part of a group of machines at a time, such as a laptop cart with 30 laptops in it. In that case, I have a permanent “Temp Group” that I use for this. I put machines I’m currently working with into that group and make a multicast task. When I’m done, I’ll just delete those hosts from that group and add the next few. When done, Just delete the hosts from that group and leave the group alone.
Our naming convention where I work includes the room numbers, so I find that adding particular related hosts (using the filter) to a particular group to be very fast.

Yeah thats the way we are doing it right now, but still it would be nice if it would be possible without groups
-
My two cents is that you may be more of an edge case then you think, this is the first time anyone has mentioned anything like this. The beauty is that depending on your skills you can customize things to an extensive degree.

regarding an easy way to find the hosts you want, the search function can do wonders for you. anything you put in the description is included in search, so you can put info in the description to help you find what you want. for example: lab 215, asset No 828401, beige box

I’d kill for something like this, although there are definitely workarounds that we use like the temporary group suggestion. It’s a pain in the ass, but I am guessing there is no way to do it without groups.
