@Junkhacker Fog can run DHCP. šŸ˜‰ Most allow you to turn DHCP off.

Sorry new here, So after installing fog 1.2 i’d update the trunk and it should let me image win 8/8.1 ? Would this image it in UEFI mode or legacy only ?

That depends on your PXE boot / DHCP configuration.

      It’s simple.

Undionly.kpxe and undionly.kkpxe and pretty much ANY file that does NOT have an .efi extension is used for BIOS.

ANY file WITH an .efi extension is used for UEFI.

There are two versions of the .efi files, the ones in /tftpboot are 64 bit. The ones in the i386 folder ( /tftpboot/i386 ) are 32 bit.

And, the boot files have nothing to do with your original error. It’s that FOG is treating this like… whatever image type you have it set to… I am assuming Win7. Windows 7 image handling obviously does not work for windows 8.1.

There is support written for Windows 8.1 in FOG trunk. You can either update to Trunk to get that functionality, or wait for FOG 1.3.0 to be released.

We may need to update the wiki to be sure to include all arch settings. I see it lists this for the Linux dhcp, but not for the windows 2012 setup (step 3). @Wayne-Workman

The steps are the same for all architecture types - you’d just change the number in step 3 and then maybe give the names something that is specific to the arch you have setup.

That said - I also understand that someone who doesn’t understand it already will be totally lost for how to set it up for additional architectures. So we do need more steps. Maybe even a video.

Also - in case anyone is wondering what the heck we are talking about, we are talking about this: https://wiki.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php?title=BIOS_and_UEFI_Co-Existence

@skotteru I use Active Directory and I deployed a whole lot of Win8.1 machines recently and I don’t sysprep. I maintain one image for each model of PC in my building - this is to keep my images lean and mean and fast - fast to deploy - fast to boot. (5 minute deployment time for 40GB image).

You upload when the client is not on the domain, and use the fog client (Legacy and New works on 8.1) to join the domain after imaging.

But you will find lots of mixed opinions on how to do it.

You know what I say, now? Do what floats your boat, I don’t care lol. I’m maintaining an image per model! šŸ™‚

Imaging solutions will always have to support the network driver / kernel of the month. Always. Always. Always.

Because we I.T. folks want to immediately image the 700 brand-new computers we just purchased for half a million dollars. And we will go to whatever solution is necessary to get it done, and immediately too. Luckily, the Linux kernel is very robust in design and release frequency.

This image was CentOS 7 minimal, fully updated as of April 2016. Using FOG Trunk r7286. Network is 1Gbps capable, target hardware was an old Optiplex 760 with a SATA II mechanical HDD.

FOG was running inside of a VM with 2 cores assigned, and 512MB RAM. It was running on a VM host that also hosts 3 other VMs, each with 2 cores assigned and 512MB RAM. The VM host hardware is an Optiplex 380 with a Core 2 Duo and SATA II mechanical HDD.

Please run this and give the output:

After that, re-upload this image. We need to know everything and anything that happens out of the ordinary while the upload is going. If you need to, take a video while it gets going so you catch everything.

After upload, please issue this command and give us the output, and then we will go from there.
