    • RE: Fog Scenario (Domain Environment/Isolated Network)

I would have a word with the network manager to get an address and the DHCP options added. If he doesn’t want to do it, and has no business reason you can go to the boss and say that you are trying to save him time and money, and that you need him to prod the network admin and say ‘this is happening’

If you can give a business reason to do something, and it’s free, and it’s going to save them money in the future… most bosses will like that 🙂

    • BSD Jail Fog Storage Node

I’m implementing a new storage server for one of my biggest clients…

The Main FOG server will be running on a XenServer VM. However the storage server is going to have a very nice Supermicro motherboard with dual 10GbE NICs.

I would like to put a FOG storage node on the server inside one of the jails, however FreeNAS doesn’t provide Linux Jails (They were always painful from my memory) and the only easy way would be to run a Jail with Virtualbox in it and then run fog inside virtualbox.

      This is hardly ideal…

Will the ‘simple’ guide for running FTP and NFS on FreeNAS work or is it more complicated now with 1.2?

Running FOG natively in BSD could also improve the amount of users running the project as it could be an easy plugin click install.

    • RE: FOG is slow to clone or restore to SSDs

Certainly strange, my SSDs at a minimum keep up with HDDs. I’m mainly limited by gigabit.

      what PCs, what SSDs?

    • RE: DHCP lease time and IP scope - Something to watch out for...

I guess I’m lucky that Windows Server or pfsense usually does my DHCP. you must be imaging on a different network to your main machines.

what made you decide not to put the imaging service on your main network so you could image any PC at any time?

    • RE: Latest Development FOG

Sounds great, always updated and only a minor delay on boot (which doesn’t happen very often).

Does it download updates/new kernels at regular intervals or only on boot.

Possibly once a week or once a month would be good to update them and put the older ones in a backup folder for roll back if needed.

    • RE: More Graphical Imaging Screen

It would be nice, but it’s not really a ‘need’.

I also end up with occasional support calls regarding this but when the users look at the screen and see things advancing and the timer getting lower they usually don’t cause too much fuss.

    • RE: Image made on slow pc is slow after restore on new Dell with SSD

use a script to expand the drives. I have something on my windows machines that does it automatically as I deploy everything on a small image. Linux must have an equivalent. either way… look up on Ubuntu resources rather than here for better help with expanding partitions.

      spec of laptop?

‘slow’ doesn’t help much. give statistics 🙂

      which Ubuntu did you use?

Ubuntu generally has good driver support, but check by running Ubuntu on one of the laptops 🙂

Are you just asking about the WOL or are you having problems with imaging as well>

    • RE: Problems installing Fog on Ubuntu 14.04

pxelinux.0 - sounds like your using the old version of FOG.

Also, drop in on IRC. there are some good people around who can help with initial stuff.

I also use FOG in education, saves lots of time, and no need to go to each PC.

Make sure you try out the Location Plugin. might work for you depending on how fast your links are between buildings.

    • RE: What Backup Solution do you use?

Once I create an image I usually copy off the image files to my NAS. I usually end up with many versions as the image develops and gets tested with new hardware and software.

Then my NAS is backed up to a secondary and offsite.

My Fog server is a VM and the VHD gets copied off at specified intervals to the NAS as well.

some duplication but worth the extra space for me as I can go back to a specific point in time while developing a new image and then get rid of the copies once the image is ready.

The restore is as simple as importing the VM with the VHD back again to a VM host and changing any images that may need it.

    • RE: Promise WebPAM PROe (VTrak M300i) as an image NAS

if your using iSCSI why don’t you let a hypervisor deal with all the pain. then the fog thinks the drive is local and will run along thinking everything is ‘normal’

    • RE: Restoration USB Key

redo backup / ghost / acronis trueimage etc can all do this 🙂

fog is a very good piece of software for imaging networked PCs.

slightly problematic are laptops that are normally wireless but these are things you accept.

possibly if the developers spent all their time creating what has already been created the main product (network booting and imaging) might suffer.

also… if this is windows your imaging you could use the windows tools to make an unattended USB that automatically installs windows.

    • RE: New image downloads very slowly...

Same issue when downloading back onto the laptop the image was on… there must be something very strange in the image or the hardware isn’t fully running nice with fog…

Tried running a windows install from one of my older desktops and imaging round in a circle of machines including the laptop and then back to the original and that is working…

Probably something that will solve itself once the UEFI stuff gets going. That’s the only real difference I can see between all the PCs.

Now at least that I have an image that will move to other machines successfully I can get going do what I was hoping to have already done.

At approx 74% it stopped stuttering and is going up past 370MB/min

right upto 86% and then stuttering again…

I am definitely thinking there is something up with the compression on this image.
