    • RE: Dell OptiPlex 5080 - Fails at connecting with boot.php

@george1421 Man I really appreciate your interest in this issue, thanks for your help with this.

I’ll see if we can try the switch option, though we might have already inadvertently done that. I’ll check if our process meets those conditions.

I know we have an older version of FOG, but honestly… everyone has been afraid to update anything on our FOG imaging machine in case it breaks. We all have pretty rudimentary knowledge of how the system works and how it was initially set up and whatnot. /: And we’re on kind of a time crunch so we haven’t had time to try like… taking a copy of the current versions and trying to update and just restoring the old image if there are problems.

So, about snponly.efi… Could you point us in the right direction for how to actually use snponly.efi?

@george1421 Okay, update. We’ve updated the firmware, BIOS, anything my coworker could think to update as far as the actual Dell itself goes. Still not working. We also closed the FOG image and opened a fresh one and tried to see if that would work and still nothing.

My coworker is looking into trying out snponly.efi.

@george1421 Naw, looks like it’s still http. Good thought though! Also sorry I haven’t been able to get you further information, I’ve been working on software all day and my coworker has been busy as well, so we haven’t had any time to test that 5080 machine.

@george1421 You’re all good with your questions! I’m just kinda feeling my way through this. I inherited FOG from a previous employee who basically left no instructions and very little crosstraining with other employees. I’m in my third week here so this system’s still very new.

I pulled up the ipxe page, starts with #ipxe like you said.

And yeah, it’s just the 5080.

I’ll have to get back to you on the dhcp once I figure that out.

@george1421 I’m trying to figure out how to answer your questions, but I’m very new with this system so bear with me haha

192.168.1.7 is our FOG server, yeah.

Everything should be on the same subnet. I have several ethernet cables and even tried some of the same ones that worked on other computers, still nothing.

Well, as for pulling up 192.168.1.7, it doesn’t pull up on my own computer but it does on the FOG computer, though it just pulls up the actual FOG dashboard to work from. It isn’t connected to an outside network.

I’ll check that the computer’s firmware is up to date.

I’m not sure how to choose between ipxe and snponly, or where to find either of those, but I’d be willing to try it all the same.

    • Dell OptiPlex 5080 - Fails at connecting with boot.php

Here’s the story: We have 8 Dell OptiPlex 5080s. from the same supplier. 7 out of 8 imaged fine, so I don’t think it’s specifically an issue with FOG but I thought I would ask here anyway in case other people have run across this issue too.

So, the other computers had no issue. This one lets me put the FOG username and PW and either allows me to choose an image before failing or just goes right to this connecting screen where it times out trying to connect.

We’ve tried a BIOS factory reset to the Dell, tried to set NIC boot options, did a CMOS wipe, and redid the BIOS NIC options, and every time it’s failed.

      Any thoughts would be appreciated.

@tom-elliott I’m looking forwards to it! There’s a lot about FOG I don’t know yet and I’m just starting to dip my toes in.

@george1421 I appreciate even just the link. Right now, I haven’t done enough with FOG yet to have any specific questions, but honestly I’m trying to gather enough knowledge so that when I do come across something that isn’t working then I know how to ask the right questions. I’ve seen the process, it’s really similar to what I’ve done before like with SCCM, so the FOG process is at least similar enough to me that it isn’t an alien process. I guess I’m just trying to start getting ahead of the game as best as I can.

    • Point a newbie in the right direction

Hey all. I just got hired to a new job and this is my second week on. I’ve been hired on to take over the software and imaging portion of their operations, and so I’ve inherited FOG from the previous employee.

I’ve only been on the IT scene for roughly two years now, my previous job consisting of laptop imaging and computer setup for new and existing users. I’ve done a walk through of the imaging process with FOG and it’s relatively similar to what I’ve done in the past, but it’s still going to be something of a learning curve. Not to mention, the existing employees have limited experience with FOG themselves, as it was almost entirely handled by the previous employee who left no documentation behind when he moved on.

I’ve never worked on the backend side of imaging, like setting up the process, so that’s only one of the challenges for me in this new role. The rest is trying to understand the process that was set up by someone else and learning the system and its quirks.

I’m here asking for help pointing me in the right direction to get started on learning FOG and its features, and perhaps help point me towards other important information that would benefit me going forwards.

Feel free to ask me any questions and I appreciate any help yall can offer me.
