• Step back and take a breath

Warning Long Post:)
With any major project there is sure to be glitches. To me, and it seems many on the forum, we have been frustrated with the upgrade from .32 to 1.01. The upgrade wiki makes it seem like a simple 5 step process, but I don’t think it is. So before we jump down each others throats I for one am taking a step back and taking a deep breath.
Ahhhhh…🆒

Like many open source project the developers are doing this out of a sense of community, not for financial gain. I am sure they are hard working and dedicated to the project. But that may be at the core of issues. They are dedicated hard working programmers. Someone needs to be a technical writer who can step back and see things from the prospective of a user.

Of course to someone spending hours in the code and UI it is obvious that X needs to be done so that Y will work. But to us going from something that worked well for years to something that is not working we get frustrated. The wiki is one short page about upgrading, nothing about tftp, changing config.php files. Try to find a page on doing a fresh install of 1.01 and all I find is a detailed description of how .32 works and how to install it.

I would suspect that many of us use FOG as an integral part of our jobs, and I know working in education our busy season is upon us. I have a stack of 30 laptops that need FOGGING and about 500 desktop that are waiting behind those. I blocked out about 16 hours to upgrade FOG based on the one page wiki article. I now see that that will not be enough.

OK so I can complain, but what good does that do? Nothing at all. Complaining and even (what I hope is) constructive criticism without solutions is less than useless. It is demoralizing and takes up everyone’s valuable time. 😞

So in the spirit of open source and community I am offering to do what I do best, educating. I am happy to work with the development team or whoever to write some documentation and maybe create screencasts. As I said earlier FOG is integral to my job and has been for many years. It is time I give something back to the community and the project. If the project team wants my help, please contact me.

• RE: DHCP no problem but TFTP always hangs during PXE boot even after restarting it. What gives?

From this thread and others with the OP I’m not exactly sure if the issue was resolved. I think I have the same issue. But I am using Ubuntu 12.04. You said there was a known issue with 12, but I didn’t have an issue when using FOG .32. Did something change in 1.01 to make this an issue? Would upgrading to Ubuntu 13 solve it? Or did I not set something up when I upgraded?

That darned cache. Clearing it worked for me. I don’t know why but Firefox has that issue with many websites.
there was a line in the install script telling you that you would need to edit the config.php file if you had a password
you had to hit enter to proceed past that message
here is the line:

It talks about if MySQL isn’t install. It was already installed. Therefore It did NOT apply to me. Maybe you should read the line before criticizing me. Or you should write the line in the script so that it says change the config.php file even is you already have MySQL installed.

Also a line in the script says:
Please see our wiki for more information at http://www.fogproject.org/wiki

That is why I suggested it should be in the wiki, not the script.

• Host menu links not working on Firefox

I haven’t seen this in the forum which leads me to believe it is local to me.

I use Firefox as my browser of choice (version 29.01) I just got 1.01 working and was looking around. I went to a host page and on the left there is a series of links in the host menu. I hoover over them and I see they point to thinks like active directory or inventory. When I click on the link nothing happens. This leads me to think it is a browser issue. It is, when I use Chrome instead of Firefox it works fine.

As I have done some web stuff I know getting things to work in every browser is difficult, but the usual suspect is IE, not Firefox. If this a fixable issue?

I followed the wiki instructions to upgrade my .32 install to version 1.01. Everything seemed to work fine. I had no errors. When I try to log in the fog I get an unable to connect to database error. The install did not change MySQL:

• A long time critic repents, and asks a question about distributed FOG

I have long been a critic of the pace in the development of FOG. Of course it makes me ecstatic to see, just as I get ready for a summer of Fogging, that there is a new release. I have not installed or even downloaded the latest version yet, but I am sure it will rock, after getting used to the changes.

I was planning on a overhaul of the infrastructure that I use to run FOG. I am using a distributed system with three local FOG installs in each of three building. I create images and control everything from the master install in my office. Will this still work with 1.0x or are there changes I need to worry about?

• Client keeps running FOG

I have two Win XP clients that I was fogging in a lab of 25 computers. 23 had no issues, however two complete the fogging then give an error basically saying that a client with the MAC address can’t be found. The error repeats every few seconds. If I power off the machine and power it back on it tries to run Fog again with the same results. I can’t figure out how to stop it from trying to run Fog. There are no active or scheduled tasks listed, I have rebooted the servers, but it still wants to run Fog on these two machines. How can I reset things so they don’t try to run Fog?

• Toshiba Satellite L355D

I don’t know if this is an incompatibility issue or more likely a hardware issue.
When I try to fog this laptop I get a series of error messages. I get four of these messages:
[drm:drm_edid_block_valid] ERROR Raw EDID
then I get this message:
[drm:radeon_dvi_detect] ERROR HDMI-A-1 probed a monitor but no|invalid EDID

then the series repeats until I shut off the laptop.

Any ideas?

• RE: Auto Domain joining no working

More info from fog.log
I left the PC running and sometime during the night it joined the domain. Looking at fog.log which began at 6:50am today I see two groups of entries. Snapin client and Taskreboot . They are running every 10 minutes or so. Taskreboot always reports no tasks waiting. The weird thing is with snapin client. One time they will run and report no tasks waiting, then the next time they run they report they can’t connect to the fog server. It cna’t resolve tco-fog, which is the main server. I thought it should be looking for ths-fog the local server. I think it should have the domain added to the end. Where is the config file I need to edit to change this?

I will look at the log file today.

Yes the fog client is installed and the exact same image worked on my bench before I rolled it out to the other building.

I verified the domain\username was used and that the password is encrypted with fog crypt. I did not use an ou letting it go to the default and then in AD moving the computers to the correct ou.

• Auto Domain joining no working

I have two FOG servers a main and storage node that does TFTP and PXE set up mostly following this wiki page: http://www.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/Multiple_TFTP_servers. I have done testing and I can get my clients that connect to the storage node (on a separate subnet) to retrieve an image, run FOG and rename the client. But they won’t auto join the domain. There are no issues if they connect to the main server.

One clue that leads me to believe it has to do with a sync issue between the servers is that I was working on one of the clients when it just rebooted and joined the domain.

I have used the Fog management page to start the deploy with auto join selected and also tried doing a full register and join the domain after imaging, neither makes a difference.

How does FOG ‘tell’ a client it should join the domain. Is it in a config file or is there some message sent?

So I have to extract the entire FOG application on the Windows machine. That worked. Thank you. Slowly but surely I am working through the details of running FOG. My suggestion for improving the wiki is better topic organization. To me the topics have no logical structure, once I read one topic where should I go next? Only a suggestion.

• FOGCrypt problems

I must be the dumbest person on the face of the earth because I just can’t figure out how to run FogCrypt. Before I went through the hassle of recompiling I figured I would just try out the AD join by using the default passkey. First am I supposed to run FOGCrypt on the FOG server or on a Windows machine? I tried both and on Linux I got a command not found error (I was in the same directory when I ran the command) on Windows I got an INI error. That leads me to believe I am supposed to run the command on Windows. What files or folders do I need on Windows to run the command?

I figured out how to create an unattended.xml file using Windows System Image manager(WSIM) . It validated in WSIM with no errors. I copied it to the c:/windows/system32/sysprep folder. The I run sysprep with OOBE selected and generalize selected. I create an image with FOG and when I deploy the image I don’t think it reads my answer file because it ask me for the time zone, and the product key is not added.
