I did some quick research on this issue. First, do you have another USB drive inserted to the computer when you try to boot this? If so, try removing it. Also, is this being done on a physical machine or a VM? If it’s a VM, you may want to try switching the drive to IDE instead of SCSI (if using VMware) I know FOG doesn’t like SCSI drives if used in VMware.

RE: Windows 7 Without SysPrep?
You still need to remove a registry key for this to work. Here’s an exert on what needs to be done:
Right before uploading the image the MountedDevices registry key must be cleared. If it is not, the master image and subsequent deploys will result in this problem: Vista Image says 0xc000000e \windows\system32\winload.exe can not be loaded
This can be accomplished by any one of the following methods:
[]use Sysprep with the /generalize switch
[]run FOGprep.exe
[]manually delete the ??\volume{…} keys in the registry under “HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices”
[]run the following from an administrator’s console:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} device boot
bcdedit /set {default} device boot
bcdedit /set {default} osdevice boottaken from: http://www.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/What_do_I_have_to_do_to_an_image_before_uploading%3F

RE: FOG PXE menu booting LIVE CD
Are you using the latest memdisk? Also, did you append the iso in the config file with the iso and raw?

RE: Better Task Deployment
gotcha, so it’s really load it > updates > snapshot > sysprep > roll back > update > snapshot > sysprep > roll back > update etc more or less, never snapshot after a sysprep. I’ve never had much luck with trying to image Windows 7 this way. So i’m setting a VM up right now to test. If I can get this working reliably for me, this could save us a lot of time at work. Currently our Win7 image takes between 30-40 minutes to deploy per machine. It would be nice to just use FOG as deploying is sooo much faster. 3 minutes for a 10 gig image. I take it that you use the FOG client for the naming of the machines?

RE: Better Task Deployment
Sysprepping that way, do you have to do the skiprearm thing as well? or doesn’t it matter since you’re just working off of snapshots?

RE: Better Task Deployment
mainly just a generic setting answer file? like language, timezone, product key? Stuff like that?

RE: Is there any way to pxe boot from the lan when i cannot enable it from bios
I could be wrong, but I think that will still override it. That program will give you access to features you never even knew you had on the BIOS. For instance, set the machine to PXE boot at the next restart automatically.

RE: Better Task Deployment
I’ve yet to find a way that I like to do Windows 7 imaging. Mostly, I hate using WAIK. I assume you setup your image this way?

This will be your best friend
Dell Client Configuration Utility lets you create a stand-alone executable package that can configure BIOS, update BIOS, or capture BIOS settings inventory data. The executable package can be run as a stand-alone package or used with enterprise software deployment tools.

Better Task Deployment
So i’ve been away for a while. Been getting certs like crazy, so lots of studying. Interestingly enough, i’ve worked with a lot of imaging both on PC and Macs. I’ve been using DeployStudio for the Macs, and a combination of WDS, SCCM, and MDT for Windows (Lite Touch and Zero Touch deployments). Both work extremely well for what they are, once they are properly configured, but that’s a different story However, both products are based heavily on tasks to deploy the image and software. While both imaging solutions work, they do it in different ways, at least the way I was using them.
PC deployments - You image the machine with a very basic image. You install 7, sysprep it once you get it installed, and that’s your base image. Then MDT and SCCM would take over and basically run a script that would install the applications in order based on your config. It would keep installing and restarting as needed until everything was completed.
Mac deployments - The Macs seemed to be almost identical with DeployStudio. You could do a “traditional sysprep” on the machine to give you the default image. Then you create a task list to do various tasks while the machine is being imaged. For instance you would set the task to Image the machine > download/install updates > install extra software that wasn’t in the image > Bind to AD or OD. All this would be done while the machine was netboot’d to the server. After that list completed, the machine would restart and everything would be good.
So to me it seems like more mainstream imaging programs are going modular with using tasks, even down to the individual PC’s. So it would be nice to see if it would be possible to start seeing if FOG would start to incorporate this as well. That’s on my wish list, if only I could being to code that

RE: Fog can do bare metal backup and restore ?
This is a good guide if you are using Windows XP, http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/how-to-create-a-universal-windows-xp-image-using-mysysprep-exe-and-vm-ware.616/
And this is another good guide if you are using Windows 7, http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/windows-7-deployment-fog-sad2-driver-tool.380/
It’s hard to have 1 generic way of doing something as you customize the images to fit your needs.

RE: Fog can do bare metal backup and restore ?
If the image that you create is sysprepped correctly, this would be similar to a bare metal backup and restore.

RE: Image only 3.8mb
Just a quick thought, in the BIOS, is your drive set to RAID? I think the Dell’s are by default. Try switching the drive mode to ATA and see if that helps at all.

Core 3.3.3
Just saw that this was posted less than 2 hours ago. Any reason to switch from 3.2.4 to 3.3.3 Kernel?

RE: Recomended OS for Fog
I have setup FOG .32 on the 12.04 beta and it appears to be working. I don’t see why .33 wouldn’t.

RE: Next upgrade of FOG/Ubuntu
Running it as root appeared to have fixed the problem.

RE: Next upgrade of FOG/Ubuntu
So I just tried running the install script from within the bin folder, while I get further (lets me enter IP info) it never actually gets to the install point. I just get command not found errors when it tries to install the packages.

RE: FOG 0.33 - What's coming?
Woo, first post in April on this thread But, any news/updates that can be said about .33?

RE: Next upgrade of FOG/Ubuntu
I will give that a try when I get home, that might be the issue. And who knows, this could be fixed when the official upgrade is released.
