    • multiple images with same image path

Our production FOG server is from 2014 if i’m not mistaken. And I am trying to replicate a process that we currently have for the old server onto this new updated server. On the old one we have 2 images for one model of computer and they are the master image and a pointer/dummy image. The image path for both of those are pointed to the same place. When I try to replicate it onto this new box running Debian 9 and FOG 1.5.4 I get an error “Image create fail Please choose a different path, this one is already in use by another image.” On the pointer image. I guess my question is, is it possible to have multiple images with the same image path?

      Yes i know it’s convoluted.

Only reason I ask this is because I want to give them this option if they don’t like my other options.

Link to another post where i talked more about it. https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/12170/individual-computers-assigned-to-groups/3

@quazz Where do you see “Quick Deploy”, because when I NIC boot and get to the FOG boot screen the only options i have listed from top to bottom are:
      Boot form hard disk
      Run Memtest86+
      Update Product Key, Deploy Image
      Join Multicast Session
      Quick Host Deletion
      Client System Information (compatibility)

The deploy image option prompts you to enter in the FOG username and password. I can’t go that route but i know there will be complaints about that as well.

@quazz The thing is we always have computers (laptops) coming and going that needs to be re-imaged. Some days we get just 4 laptops back and the next day we can get 10 laptops back and they are not the “same” but they are the same model laptops.

Will just having computers tasked on the fog server have any impact on the speed of the server or the speed of the imaging process?

@quazz Yes I can the group image to the one i need but my question is when there are more than 1 computer assigned to a group could I just deploy the computers that I want from that group?

    • RE: Individual Computers assigned to groups

@Quazz I guess the issue is if i do individual host from Host menu, is when the master image gets changed/updated I would have to manually go and change 20 different host images.

I’m looking for a way to make it less manual. And i was hoping that Groups would solve that.

The current way we have it set up is when we first create a master image ex. Dell_790_Master_Date that has the image path of /images/Dell_790_Master_Date. Then we create another dummy/pointer image called Dell_790_Pointer that has the image path of /images/Dell_790_Master_Date. Then we have 20 Dell 790 host that has a host image of Dell_790_Pointer. So when the master image gets changed or if we want to go back to a certain point we can just choose the correct image for the Dell_790_Pointer, instead of all 20 computers.

      Question you might ask:
Q: Why not just keep going with this method?
A: The new updated FOG server doesn’t support it by the looks of it. I tried changing the path for the Pointer image and i get an error saying something along the lines of “Image path already in use”.

Sorry, I know it’s convoluted but it’s how they had it set up and I just inherited it. I am trying to find a simpler less convoluted method. Any suggestion would help.

      FOG 1.5.4
      Debian 9

I am trying to set up a group in FOG that called Dell_790 is assigned to one image Dell_790_Master. In my group Dell_790 there are 20 computers assigned to it, all Dell 790 computers.

Is there a way for me to pick and choose which computers i want to image? I tried the Deploy but it just deploys the image to all 20 computers at once.

@Wayne-Workman @Quazz Fixed, it was that fixparts was missing from 1.5.4 as discussed from this post https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/12059/fixparts-missing-1-5-4-win-10.

To be on the safe side I manually downloaded bzImage, bzImage32, init.xz, and init_32.xz and put them in /var/www/html/fog/service/ipxe/. I followed the directions “Manual update to latest kernel” on this wiki page https://wiki.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php?title=Kernel_Update.

@wayne-workman Where would i find it in the GUI? I went to Configuration and all i see there is an empty box titled “FOG Version Information” and another box titled “Kernel Version” with the only information “DefaultMember FOG Version: (1.5.4)”.

    • Could not fix partiton layout (runFixparts)

My fog server is running on it’s own offline network.
      Fog Server:
      OS: Debian 9
      Fog version: 1.5.4

The computer that I am testing with is a Dell Optiplex 790 running Windows 10, with legacy boot.

I get the error Could not fix partition layout (runFixparts) when i try to capture the image. I tried booting it into debug mode and run the Fixparts command but I get a command not found. https://i.imgur.com/Mb2aVth.jpg

    • How to check if I actually moved my /images/ directory to secondary HDD

I am completely new to FOG and Linux in general. Sorry if don’t understand certain Linux or FOG terms.

      System:
      Debian 9.4
      FOG 1.5.4

I want to move the directory /images/ to it’s own HDD because I have a 1TB HDD spare that I would like to be dedicated to storing images only and nothing else. I followed the direction https://wiki.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/Moving_your_images_directory/Adding_Storage_to_the_Images_directory, and I feel like this is what I needed to do and I followed every step that is described on there word for word. How do I check if the directory /images/ have been moved to the second HDD? How do i know that all my future images will be saved to the directory that is on the second HDD?

This is just a test run for me so any mistake I’ve made and will make will not hurt me. Currently I just have a spare 250 HDD connected to act as the 1TB i described above.

      Any suggestion is appreciated.
