@Tom-Elliott - Just to clarify what I’m seeing with my crazy machine - when host name is changed in FOG console, nothing happens on host (edit: even when manually restarted). When host is set in FOG console to join domain and is manually restarted, then both the machine name AND the domain join happen.

@Tom-Elliott - Yes, when I manually reboot the client the machine name changes and the AD join is done. It only takes the one reboot though, almost like it was all done in the background without any signs it was happening.

@Psycholiquid - I actually have that in my setupcomplete.cmd to stop FOG and then start it once completed. However, I have not sysprepped this host yet. I am still building the master image. I was expecting that as soon as the FOG client service started it would see the discrepancy in hostname and change it immediately, restarting the machine to complete the task I have only just in the last couple days started using the new client so I’m used to how the “old” ones act.

As a test, I set the host to join AD. Fog.log shows domain join process and issues restart command to machine but nothing happens. Logging out doesn’t help machine to restart. When I manually restart machine everything comes together, machine name is changed and joined to domain. Here’s log from right before I set host to join AD, then waited until 2:00 to manually restart machine

So I reverted my workstation VM and started fresh. I updated FOG server, reset encryption data for workstation, then powered up VM and installed new client on workstation. AD join is turned off but “Host changes every cycle” is checked for this host. It is not renaming the host, it seems to think the hostname is correct which it is not. Fog.log isn’t indicating any errors is there another log I can check?

HOLD A MOMENT! I just found out what the functionality of the “Host changes every cycle” checkbox is. I am going to set this and see if it fixes things… I didn’t have it checked before because I was not familiar with it.

@Psycholiquid - that worked, the machine restarted twice to rename and rejoin. I guess the issue I’m worried about is that we count on FOG to rename and join AD during the deployment of a sysprepped image when the local Administrator is logged on but if the task reboots aren’t happening the whole process eventually freezes waiting for the reboot to finalize things. I believe that’s what I was seeing last night that started me down this road. Maybe updating the client today will make the difference.

I’m going to try sysprepping my image to see what happens and get back to everyone.

Seems like task reboots aren’t happening as they should. Neither when I rename the machine nor when I tell it to join AD. The reboot task appears to be created since it’s noted in the fog.log, but it doesn’t happen.

As I indicated before, the machine name didn’t change even when I manually did a restart, but it DID change when I set the host to join AD - AND THEN - did a manual restart. Not sure how that’s significant but maybe?

I also can’t find any menu setting unchecked that would be preventing FOG form doing it’s thing. Is there maybe a password problem? I previously changed the local fog password in Ubuntu and the .fogsettings file to match the storage and ftp passwords since my uploads weren’t initially moving from /dev to /images but that all seems to be working fine now.

Update: Just for fun I set the computer to join AD and re-started. It came back up with the correct hostname AND it was joined to the domain - however it never rebooted other than the restart I manually initiated. Here is the current fog.log starting right before my manual reboot at 10:55

Funny thing, when I did a service restart it now says users logged in enforce disabled. I checked computer name no re-name or re-start pending. I looked through FOG settings and see a couple different “enable enforce” checkboxes which are all checked. Here’s current log from latest service restart:

FOG Trunk v7486, Ubuntu 14.0.4, client 10.5. This is a new FOG server, hasn’t seen production use yet other than to upload an image. Just updated server this morning to have latest everything as I’m working on creating a master Win 7 desktop image. Fog.log shows no errors I can see, hostnamechanger module says hostname correct and it’s not. It’s not changing the hostname, not sure where to look to correct this. I’ve seen a couple other articles but nothing that seems to be my particular problem.

Updating to 6549 seems to have worked, funny it didn’t ask me to update/upgrade the database, just went straight to login. But I’m deploying an image so I’m happy! Thank you!! I will try that first next time, just thought if it was working yesterday it should still be working if I didn’t make any changes.

@Wayne-Workman - oddly enough I get the same error when clicking on “Log Viewer”! Other menu items display their pages, but not log viewer.

Just began happening today, was fine yesterday. Getting “Page can’t be displayed” error when clicking on “create deploy task” and no task is created. Tried several images and same thing. Didn’t find anyone with same issue in forums. Recreated host manually, rebooted server, restarted MySQL, not sure what logs to check. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Oh, I’m not reinventing anything. I’m documenting for FOG, not WDS.

You also need to keep in mind - all revenue generated for the FOG videos I make will be donated to the fog project. All wiki articles I write generates traffic to the fog site, which in turn generates revenue for FOG. It’s in the best interests of the FOG Project for me to produce documentation specific to FOG.

And no decent Open Source project would rely on documentation written for competing software. I won’t have people relying on a WDS oriented video to do something for FOG.

This works for my VM - not that I understand why nor do I know if it’s a sign something is still wrong with my setup. My OS comes up if no tasks are pending and I am able to upload and deploy an image. Haven’t tried multicasting but I’m going with the assumption for now that it will work fine too. Current boot file is ipxe.efi but have also tested fine on snponly.efi and snp.efi.

I will work on the Dell E5550 laptop tomorrow and let you know what happens. THANK YOU EVERYONE!!! (Edit 3/2/16: E5550 works just fine)

Funny, no matter what I set as my exit type, I see this as HD boot instruction:
“:fog.local

but when I look at Wayne’s upload I see this:

sanboot --no-describe --drive 0x80 || goto MENU

I would expect to see a changed response each time I change exit type.

Edit: Actually, the parameters for boot only change when I change the BIOS exit type, they don’t change when I change the EFI exit type. Maybe I have a corrupt file of some sort?
