• RE: Renew images

Also, the upload goes to /images/dev/[mac addr] until the image is completely uploaded and moved to it’s final home at the end of the imaging processes. The chances of the upload process leaving you imageless is small, but the chance your new image is worthless due to some configuration issue, is medium.

If you have a large number of devices, you can create a new image definition and upload it just to make sure it works, then run a simple SQL statement to point all devices that used the old image ID to the new image ID.

    • RE: Which version of Ubuntu is Best ?

I prefer 10.04 LTS so I’ll have updates to the system for a while. A lot of stuff has been done with Fog on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, so the knowledge base is larger than the new versions. If you wave to be a pioneer, go with the newer ones, but if you need it to work and have lots of resources for problems, stick with 10.04 LTS.

I’m not sure what partitions are present in your setup, but you might try changing the image type to Multiple Partitions - Single Disk.

    • RE: Export hosts from Active Directory to FOG database

As far as I know, there is currently nothing in Fog to set it up to have a structure like Active Directory. Fog cannot directly talk to active directory, but when the new UI comes out and allows easier creation of custom pages, it might be possible to add LDAP functionality to help achieve what you want, but it’s not in vanilla Fog.

I’m curious what you are trying to achieve overall by setting Fog up to mirror AD.

    • RE: Export hosts from Active Directory to FOG database

I’m confused. Are you wanting to use Fog to image computers that will be joined to a domain or are you just trying to get the Fog client onto existing computers which already exist in an AD domain?

Are you having problems registering the host or imaging it?

    • RE: Export hosts from Active Directory to FOG database

I think pushing the clients and enabling the auto register is the way to go.

You can, if you just can’t get that to work, use the network scanners to get MACS linked to host names and import that.

If you are interested in the ProxyDHCP setup, for Ubuntu at least, it’s on the wiki at: http://www.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php?title=Setting_up_ProxyDHCP

    • RE: HP 500B MT will not PXE BOOT - File not found

If you are getting this error during PXEboot before it even loads the bzImage, AND it only happens for some models of computers, you may have a problem with the PXE firmware for the device. I have 270 Acer Iconia Tab w500p, and about 40 Compal JHL91 laptops that will not PXE boot, giving the “file not found” error. All other devices on the network can find and download the pxe boot file just fine.

After scouring wireshark logs I saw that the ones that worked were getting the dhcp info from the dhcp server (next server) and requesting the pxe boot file and getting the chunks of the file in order. The ones that didn’t work were failing on getting the 2nd chunk of the pxe boot file. No idea why, they got the 1st chunk but died on chunk 2.

I ended up installing ProxyDHCP to get it to work. It takes over the pxeclient dhcp requests and serves the pxeboot file without issue for all my devices: desktops, tablets, laptops, and servers from all makes and models.

    • RE: 2 problems

ok. I got clamav to work on my Fog 0.32 server. It might have been easier to get healthcare reform legislation passed in the US, but it’s done.

I had to add the PPA package source to apt, remove the old clamav on the server, install the new one from PPA. Expand the init.gz that fog uses, update the hosts and freshclam.conf files, and make symbolic links to the virus databases in the root of my web server. If anyone wants specifics, I’ll explain, but it’s quitting time and my butt hurts from working on this for 4 hours.

    • RE: 2 problems

I’ve setup 3 Fog 0.32 servers, and it installs clamav during the Ubuntu instal for Fog (at least it says it does). I have 3 Fog servers that all give the same error when trying to run the virus scan, “no supported database found”. I think it’s a glitch and I haven’t invested the time to fix it.

There isn’t much special. You might just try removing dhcp and reinstalling it. When you install, it should ask for configuration parameters.

Make a backup of your dhcp configuration file just in case.

Did you set a master password? Some functions like quick image will not work until a master password is set in the UI.

I think the challenge is setting up DHCP to service multiple subnets on different LAN interfaces. I have no experience with this though.
