And I am happy for you people who can master Linux, I envy you that it comes to you easier than to me… I really do not know how to get started to solve my problem…

So, it is google all the way for me…

Thanks for sticking around and actually add something usefull to the community, I on the other hand am to stupid to help!

Gentlemen, gentlemen, i told that I have the deepest respect for you guys, working hard for zippo(not the lighterbrand) (nothing)
I am very pleased you gave an eye opener and so to say it is something to wait for, even if it takes a few years…
Yes please, lets put their efforts into developing FOG 2.0.
Thanks for the insight…

Signed: A FOG-fan!

Ps. it was not my idea to bash heads, but merely to point out that such a great program needs a bigger community… It is awesome and I have worked with the older version some 8 years ago, and I always wanted to have my own fog server… It never, ever failed once and that was the time before multicasting… So Thumbs up!

• FOG must expand multiple OS, including Windows servers!

Re: F.O.G on windows server It is with pain in my heart that I have to say this to the stubborn Linux community, I am not angry but only very sad that this is still not possible… Open source, does that mean that it only applies to Linux?
Why waking this up? I know that a lot of people put time money and energy into Linux and all products available, but can’t we just try to make something to work on other OS’s, so that more people can contribute in a way to the community.
Now It looks like a bit working in the shade, not that Linux (or Unix) has not got a foothold in the world, no, it is clearly visible, but It lacks a bit.

If I want to put up a fog server, I have to install a linux variant, and I have to pick the right one, because in the past I made such attempts many times concluding that some versions did not work with FOG. What a shame, hours spend to install it, and then from the errors I got to know that the OS is flawed… (ubuntu 16 -> 14) it did not work with FOG…

Such things happen, but the bridge between OS’s must be made, this is giving this piece of software such a big opportunity to expand real big. I know for a fact that a lot of companies now dwindle with GHOST and equivalent programs, but it must not be that hard for those who can program, to make a connection between FOG and Windows Server OS… Without virtualization ofcourse. (Then it still runs on Linux and that is totally not the idea)

I hope You, in the community, see the benefit of it, not only the lame facts that has been spewed out into the world around Linux.

Why? I tell a short story: I have this laptop with Ubuntu 1.14 i think, and with a lot of googling i installed FOG, commands I gave made no freaking sense to me, I could not comprehend the structure as I am a Novell-Microsoft man, so those were unclear. But it worked. After a year or so, I wanted to check upon it, seeing that it had no harddisk space left, and it needed updates… How am I going to start? Everything I do is type commands you put on the WWW, nothing that gives a meaning. If I go to Windows server, i can see the volumes, the space that is left, I can alter, move, work clearly without any compromise and I wished that Linux worked like this, user friendly, management friendly. Now maybe this is in the past, I don’t know, because I never dug into it in the last year, so, tell me, Isn’t there a soul who would like to put some elbow grease in it and start expanding the OS-world of FOG???

Absolutely no hard feelings, just respect for the work you all do, and the ease you find it to make Linux something that is your second native language, but not mine. I am too damn old to pick it up…

Thanks for reading, listening and I hope to see something in the near future…

@george1421
If you read correctly, i did say that the HP pavilion was out and not interesting anymore for this problem. It showed only the ongoing progress i made earlier. That said, the i3 Asus laptop with the Solid State Drive (SSD) could not get mounted… But ok, i see that you get confused, but the problem remains. Is there anyone who successfully managed to clone any SSD??? (With FOG ofcourse).

• RE: Why can't i clone this laptop of mine

@Tom-Elliott said in Why can't i clone this laptop of mine:

So for clarification:

Some of your systems work fine (except for the imaging portion due to “could not mount” errors).

This HP Pavilion laptop doesn’t like to PXE boot at all and, based on the information I’m gathering, is not receiving DHCP at the based PXE Boot screen.

Can you provide pictures of the errors you’re seeing so we can more appropriately troubleshoot this?

I know there was one set of HP systems that had problems PXE booting and this was/is due to Firmware issues. They (HP) never published a newer version of the Firmware so it still would have problems.

FOG Works perfectly fine with Ubuntu 16.04.

Hi Tom,

You say that it does work perfectly on Ubuntu 16.04, but i am aware that if it doesn’t all my effort is gone, i have to reinstall the server again.
The HP is not important, so stay far away from that one with all suggestions, it was a failed attempt i had a few months back but got the image already. I am now focussing on my Asus i3 with SSD harddisk that does not like or won’t get mounted by Fog. Before there is any program running via pixie-boot, there is this connecting screen in black with white letters, that screen i am talking about, there it stalls into a error and will automatically boot in 1 minute, over and over …

• RE: Why can't i clone this laptop of mine

Hi,
Thanks for the fast reply. The Fog version i use is: per Sun Jun 04, 2017 12:11 pm, Running Version 1.4.1, SVN Revision: 6071
I will dig into the two links you send…(although i knew that Fog, who really likes only Linux, runs best on a server platform, so i provide this but not knowing that the os that makes Fog great is biting back.)
Ok, read most things in the links… first link was not a real eye-opener, as i earlier looked into this fog habbit on other platforms, i did it back then on VM. Now that is not the way, pure install, and only for Ubuntu with fog.
Second link was also not the case, i do not see a cloning program, it does not even get out of the pixie-boot from FOG. It reports in that black and white letters that the disc is not mounted. So this is not in the cloning process, it thinks that the disc is not there, and yet it is, otherwise why would it error in not mounted…It says …or mount the volume with the RO option…

• Why can't i clone this laptop of mine

This is the situation, after 5 years not looking into FOG, i made 1 64 bit Pentium laptop into a Ubuntu 14.4 server and installed successfully fog on it back in januari this year. I use my Windows 2012 DHCP server, which by the way works flawless, even the server option 66 and 67 are present, but the my old HP Pavilion laptop does not go further than the rolling character /-|/-| (can’t animate it here)
Well, this laptop i put aside, and went on with other things.

Well. After a few months i was able to clone another pc in my network i got from a friends dead father (rip), Windows 7 home… Flawless…
Then i wanted to clone my laptop i3 Windows 10 running on a ssd, that runs perfectly by the way, but cloning… not. I still get this message that the OS is not completed and that updates or something preventing the disc to start cloning…
Now i am not a expert on Linux, everything i did until now i found on the internet, great help by the way, but this i can’t resolve. I go look for the message
The disk is in a unclean state - could not mount it, it is giving me an option but i do not know where to put the option…
Remember, i updated and shutdown this laptop several times with no problems. So telling me to shutdown properly is not true.

another Q: (Does anybody knows, does the UBUNTU version 16.04.2 LTS works with FOG??? The before version 16.04 did not work, and i had it reinstalled 3 times to get it right…😊 )

Description

I find it very difficult to do, yet my background has giving me the knowledge to solve this kinda problems in a whim, but aparently the better OS, Linux, has it’s flaws.
I tried to install ubuntu 16.4 whatever, yet there did fog not run on, i thought that in 8 months this problem would be solved, but it was not. I redid installation of Ubuntu 14.4 and this time i had it right. I installed version 1.2.0 instead of the newer 1.3.0.
How the hell can i upgrade without stumbling over web services that do not want to shutdown, or either remove…
I would have shot the computer at this point, but, i kept my cool, did it all over again, this time everything went fine, as long as you follow guidelines. As installation progressed, it asked me what my ubuntu would be… well, let’s try samba fileserver… How sorry i was doing that. Obviously Linux is the better os, and i am facing a fourth time installation now. That’s how good it is…
No, you don’t have to react.
All in all, it is for those who know to do what, when and how! Not me, i’ll end up only one ubuntu server 14.4 and only running fog on it; bummer… waste of power…
So, the whole internet is full with “solutions” that are good and bad, but really, it did not help at all…
Why is this procedure of shutting down a webservice so hard…
Wait until i must update to the next version of FOG, i fear that trouble’s on the way…

• RE: VirtualBox FOG Server Download

I guess that either this person is not willing or able to give the link. I tried several attempts to let Fog update but without success. Any comment i got on fora was actually my own fault, not knowing enough of ubuntu or Linux anyhow. I am too old to learn that backwards OS, so do not be mad if i say so, i have a lot of Novell degrees on my name, but even Novell was written in a language far beyond my use and eventually they made Virtual and graphic support. I hope to live to see the day that Linux makes their OS broader, even the server part where fog is easier to implement. I envy those who handle Linux so easy.
Fog is a perfect program, but there is too little solutions and too much problems. But hey, it could be all my fault…
If you really want to use the RPi as a portable fog server and you can get it working, why do you really need their network? Just take a crossover cable out with you 😉

Oh… I should add… for those of us who are old enough to have grown up in the 8 bit era of computing… doing this image with a RPi will feel like a 30 year leap back in time. You might also want to consider a tape recorder with a 300 baud interface ;)
Yes, those were the days my friend… I think that this generation of youth is so darn spoiled by luxurious internet bandwidth, wireless connecting gadgets and fast processors, that they would not dare to take a step back. They do not care how it was, unfortunately…Spoiled…
Btw, you forgot to mention the parallel cable between computers, and later serial, and then BNC and the first mainframes and so on… memories…

• RE: FOG Virtual Machine

Hi, thanks for thinking along, but i had to reinstall that old HP laptop in order to get a fresh view. I changed the bootp option in undionly.kpxe and i think too that it was a coincident, shameless OS!! 😉
Well, we have to work with it, and don’t tell me that i have to step away from Windows, because i don’t want to…it has it’s advantages too. 😄
To the point: I am now so far that when i start a task in FOG to upload that HP image to the fog server, it wakes the laptop but there is no connecting to the fog server for uploading. It tries to connect, it does not get a ipadres and all, but by memory i thought there should be a client that i need to install, i can’t find it. Must have over looked it in the process. So i’m looking on the forum at this time to find that missing piece.
I still am puzzled why it does not connect to the DHCP from my windows server. I’m shutting down one of them now and see if that helps.

• RE: FOG Virtual Machine

No go this last option, deleting number 60. I can’t get into my domain because of a failing trust relationship. It is in Dutch so i can spill it here but that makes no sense if you don’t understand the language.
I’m putting thing back the way they were and retry to log in on the domain.
Btw. the task i gave FOG, upload a image, got on the laptop from which i just spoke a tftp timeout. it is still trying… and the home screen of the fog server says that there is no task, no activity…
I’ll be back later…

And later it is, it seems that for no reason at all my old hp laptop decided to “I will not log in anymore” in windows domain. So, i have to reinstall the darn thing. Coming back on a later time.

• RE: FOG Virtual Machine

I had done a few tweaks,
sudo /bin/sleep 30 && /etc/init.d/tftpd-hpa restart
DHCP option 66 10.1.0.21
DHCP option 67 pxelinux.0 or undionly.kpxe (which one do i really need here?)
and as stubborn Microsoft sometimes is, i deleted option 60 in DHCP (PXEClient) from both servers in scope and server options.
Now when i start my older laptop and go to boot from lan, i get FOG. So the next step is quick host configuration and that worked too.
Now i try to get an image from it, remotely… cross my fingers…

Hi there, new day, fresh start, new problems to come…((-:
I looked at SVN, briefly, but when i get this VM running, or when i get the right hardware to install ubuntu and FOG, then there’s no need for this SVN. I guess at this point, i want to make this work, so stubborn as i am, i need this for my egoboost ((-:
No, i’m joking, but it is on my W2012 server at this time the simplest solution without compromising a lot on my server.
I’m still looking into former reactions, and trying the best i can do for now.

• RE: Server Shell error

I had a similar problem about Java, using Chrome i noticed that it was 32 bits and i tried installing 64 bits, then cursing whole java for no reason at all, if they had shown earlier that i used 32bits chrome. I installed it, plugin warning came, i clicked right top and said that everything coming from xx.xx.xx (my fog server) was ok and accepted. Now i get an application error details, ignore and reload. Neither one will make it work. How about that!
Don’t know what to do with that, i guess i just manually installed finally a working version of Java, and do not understand why fog’s webinterface would give this message. Anyone has an idea?? Welcome…

4490 ? Ss 0:00 in.tftpd -s /tftpboot
6105 tty1 R+ 0:00 grep tftp

I have my network safe, i mean i use only cabling. Had too much troubleshooting days finding that some wall had more iron in it than it needed. So, no wireless is interfering. I can ping the FOG server, i can reach its webserver from my ws and i can ping from my W2012 server to the FOG environment.
Earlier i answered that this is a temporarily setup, and i do not want to install Hyper-V, because this will bring unkown areas to the problem. Later maybe if the hardware is still too far away i’ll reconsider installing Hyper-V.
