That’s very promising to hear Wayne! I must admit that you shot beyond my skill set with your bash script and use of the API. I look forward to your “generic” solution!

@Tom-Elliott Yes Tom, I am in no way demanding, I am fully aware of the volunteer nature of FOG. I am merely determining the scope of the current functionality, as the Wiki, which is just as volunteer maintained, is somewhat behind the current release. This is one of the times where my understanding of system features and internal mechanics did not match up to the production environment.

@Quazz Would the exclude prevent snapin deployments on Wi-Fi? If so that would be crippling.

@Quazz You are absolutely correct, but its the end users productivity being affected. I can not bring down the facility for hours.

@Tom-Elliott Is that an option? If so how is it implemented? I suspect the Wi-Fi Mac’s are what keeps annihilating my pending MAC’s list.

    • RE: Fog Client Aware of Image Queue Depth

@Quazz The network in the facility is a hodgepodge of whatever we could get our hands on, and as a result the multicast throughput is abysmal. 300MB per min. Whereas Unicast I get upwards of 5GB per min.

Thanks for everyone’s hard work regardless of the outcome of this discussion!

I suppose I should edit the topic title, but I realize what I’m truly looking for, in an end-game sense is a rolling deployment. With my current hardware, I have reduced my queue depth on our single node to 2, and deploying to 50 in-use hosts causes mass panic akin to a zombie apocalypse. I do not have the option to gather the hardware and do a multicast, because the facility is run 24-7 with each shift using the same computer systems, and there are not enough of them to go around as it is.

      Running Version 1.4.0-RC-14
      SVN Revision: 6069
      Client: 0.11.12

I have configured all my hosts with their Ethernet MAC address in our FOG server. I have not configured their Wi-Fi MAC as I do not know of a way to PXE boot on Wi-Fi given my current hardware. But much to my horror, the FOG client will task restart the host when connected to Wi-Fi, which ends up in a boot-loop and a very concerned end-user.

What are your thoughts on this matter?

    • RE: Fog Client Aware of Image Queue Depth

I’m not familiar with the specifics of the internal mechanics, but it occurred to me that it may also be handled server side, by pushing the deployment schedule for all not-in-progress tasks to a future time, then when the in-progress deployment complete successfully, change the time to instant, then after two begin, push the rest to a future date. Also sounds shaky…

    • Fog Client Aware of Image Queue Depth

I would like to request that the Task Reboot function of the FOG Client be aware of the image queue depth. In this way the users productivity is not impeded when rolling out an image as they stare at a PXE screen informing them they are in line. The end result would be a rolling image deployment as the fog client would not trigger a reset unless there was an open slot.

      Description

I updated from RC-21 to RC-36 and noticed the client has been updated to 0.11.7 as well. I encountered a few problems.

      • The autoupdate client attempts to download from http://10.6.6.6/fog/client/smartinstaller.exe which returns a 404 error.
      • The FOG Client link at the bottom of the web interface forks, but clicking on any of the client hyperlinks to download results in a blank page…

      • OS: CentOS 7
      Client
      • Service Version: 0.11.5
      • OS: Windows 7
      Description

Been all over the Wiki, and for the life of me I am unable to locate the answers to the following questions:

      • What is the difference between the two “Snapin Type” choices? Normal Snapin & Snapin Pack are the two choices.
      • Why is the EXE option for Snapin Template absent when Normal Snapin is selected?
      • How do Snapin Pack File and Snapin File differ?
      • Why does the Snapin Command text box appear to use the Snapin File as an argument to the Snapin Pack File which must be manually specified as the default option is [FOG_SNAPIN_PATH]\MyFile.exe

These questions were brought about when I generated a “SFX” silent printer installer EXE to deploy network printers while the Printer Management issues are worked out in another thread.

      Thanks in advance guys!

    • RE: Windows 7 Fog Client Printer Management Failure

      @Wayne-Workman
Reset complete - Had to restart the host to get the data to update. Now we have the “next” issue. I have the fog printer management set to “FOG Only”. The User Client goes about its business, removes all printers, then installs the printer specified for that host in the server.

      Except it doesn’t.

I now have very panicky users who are baffled that their printers vanished. I have changed the printer management level to FOG Managed to prevent the manually installed temp printer driver/software from being removed.

@AngryScientist that log indicates your client is not authenticated with the server. To fix this, go to the host in the web portal and hit Reset Encryption Data.

Run it as administrator. Right click -> run as admin.

And the FOG Client runs as system, so it would have the necessary access to manipulate and install printers.

The right-click run as admin does not work properly on the user account due to some group policy that is beyond my scope. However, if the host is logged in the administrator account, with identical settings, PrinterManagerHelper does successfully install the printer without error messages.

I am tracking down the fog.log as we speak.

@AngryScientist we need more information. For example, providing the fog.log (or even just the printer manager section) would help. Also a screenshot of the printer configuration on the server would be of help as well.

You can also try using the PrinterManagerHelper (https://github.com/FOGProject/fog-client/releases/download/0.11.7/PrinterManagerHelper.exe). Simply enter your printer configuration into it and hit add. It should provide an error message if there is one.

Played with the PrinterManagerHelper within the user account, and when adding a printer after a few seconds, a dialog box appears with the following message:

“You do not have permission to modify the settings for this printer. If you need to change the settings, contact your system administrator.”

When PrinterManagerHelper is used to add the very same printer within the administrator account the printer installs successfully.
