I will tell my FOG server to multicast to my group of 20 machines, they are shut down. FOG will send the wake-on-lan, 20 machines start. 3 machines will go to the blue, Please Wait screen, 17 machines will boot into their OS. As far as I am aware these are identical machines. Any ideas as to why?

Because those 17 are set to boot to Hard Drive? The other 3 are set to boot from NIC?

The broadcom ethernet is first, and boot order is set to network. Also, I should state, after a restart on those 17 machines, they will then catch with the blue, Please Wait screen (therefore reassuring that things are set correctly as far as I am aware).

Try checking your BIOS config. Some BIOS use a separate boot order for WOL.

Checking BIOS version differences is a good idea too. You might need to re-flash your BIOSes.

I am also having this problem in labs that previously(IE in august) had no issues WOL or booting to the nic first, and no changes have been made to the BIOS (I verified that PXE is enabled and NIC is set to 1st in boot order) Yet I am only getting 3-4 booting up via WOL and when I manually turn the others on, a good portion boot to the OS. Any ideas?

              Thanks

If you are willing to wait a few mins, fog will reboot those pc’s and they will catch on the second boot. I have some newer HP’s that do that, some pickup right away, others take a couple of mins, then reboot, then pickup.

Maybe there are some race conditions in your network?

i.e. FOG has to upload the PXE file to the TFTP server via FTP. If your client boots before this has happened, then there will be no PXE file for it to boot.

I wouldn’t think that would be it because fog and tftp are on the same pc, although instead of creating the file directly in the /tftpboot directory, does it ‘upload’ it? I don’t know. I will try it tomorrow and see if I can find out.

It uploads it via FTP, the file is not locally copied.

This is done for flexibility; The TFTP server does not need to be on the FOG server.
