Fog tray and dual boot systems
-
Got everything working, copied/deployed my dual boot win 7/8 system. Then a thought arose. How can I use FogTray to join the machines to the domain when my 7 & 8 systems are registered as the same system/NIC?
Setup FogTray only on one OS, manually do the other?
thanks

Tom[/quote]It would be a good start to include the fog client on each OS installation that you would like FOG to manage.
That client is what allows the host to communicate with the FOG server and perform all the awesome actions that FOG lets you do, such as the printers, domain join, host naming, etc. So if there is no client, fog can’t even communicate with the machine. You can register it, image it, but fog won’t be able to rename or complete the set up as you had intended.
I don’t work with active directory, but if I recall correctly, each machine must have a unique host name in order to join a domain correctly.

Yeah you would have too. The renaming will be also an issue. Since there are no duplicate mac addresses to computer names. This brings up an interesting point.
Edit: Jaymes is correct AD registers the OS and hostname. If the OS changes then you need to re-join the domain, so when dual booting you may need to disable Hostname change and change other things with this machine.

In the hosts lists, each MAC has a hostname, Windows AD needs a unique name for each OS, so…
Manually renaming/joining one OS to AD will not take near as long as as loading the whole OS, so using FOG is still a great tradeoff!

True but as a warning you DNS records and DHCP records will have probable issues. Since its the same MAC and JOINED to the domain DNS will have to fix the A record pointers and DHCP will have to updated the A records from the DNS. UNC paths may take much longer than expected and so on…
This dual boot is nice for testing software but I would not recommend it.
