Realtek 8153 USB Network Adapter
-
I have a Realtek 8153 based USB network adapter and Fog will not work with it. I can download the driver but I do not know how to compile it into a linux kernel.
-
What kernels have you tried?

3.13.9 and I used The Tom Elliot Config file

None of the stock fog kernels work

Have you tried my kernel? Like, directly?

Soooo what is the machine that doesnât have a network plug?

Tried your kernel directly. No luck I can PXE boot. I choose view client information from the fog screen and check client compatibility. It says network fail, disk pass. I get the following error multiple times during boot
hub2-0:1.0 couldnât allocate port # usb_device
It puts a different # in the error each time 2 4 5 and 6

According to this, RTL8153 drivers only recently got supported in the kernels. Itâs loaded with my drivers, but that doesnât mean it actually works. Sorry thereâs not much more info I can do to help. Maybe try it in another usb PORT (preferably one thatâs not USB 3.0)

He canât:

Youâll have to be patient until they make drivers for a pxe boot that actually work with the USB 3.0 I guess. -
The pxe boot, itself, works perfectly fine.
Itâs the kernel loading afterward that it canât find the driver. My guess is the kernel driverâs just got a bug in it at the moment.

Thanks for the help. Not sure where I am going to go from here. i need to have 250 of these computers imaged my the end of may.

Theyâll probably have a release in a couple of days. So Iâll keep you posted, I donât have the device to test with either though, so Iâm just shooting in the dark. You could try a different configuration file as well. You donât have to try mine. I donât know where the isuse is. It looks, to me, simply like it canât attach the device on that port, maybe another one? Do you have another USB NIC you could try?
-
I am working on an L440 and got the same error using the onboard NIC. I just went in and disabled the 3.0 usb slot in the bios and it goes right to the registration/imaging screen.
Not perfect but at least it will help you get them done.

@Jeff Turley,
Did you get any resolution with this? We have just invested in the S1 Yogas with OneLink Pro docks and cannot get it connect to FOG -

Also, even if they didnât for a bit, we narrowed what the problem was. It was NOT the kernel not having the drivers. That part actually worked perfectly. It was the kernel trying to reload a device that wasnât released properly. A fix in the Development version(s) of fog was to add has_usb_nic=1 to the kernel arguments of the hosts this relates to. It would allow you to pause, disconnect the device and replug it back in. Then things seemed to work.
That said, reading your post youâre talking about Docks. I donât know whatâs different for them. But may try a newer kernel?

Thank you Tom for the information. I just installed (Feb 10, 2015) version 1.2.0 on Ubuntu 12.0.4.5 desktop. Traditional older clients are not having any problems. I did install the latest âPublished Versionâ kernel yesterday, 3.14.2. I have now just installed your latest âunofficialâ 3.18.4.
Iâll try it out. -
sadly, no change

Have you tried with the has usb nic flag enabled?
-
Any updates on this? Iâve also been unable to get this going with Yoga S1âs and the same usb adapter, Iâve tried with a bunch of different kernels and no go. Iâve tried with the flag enabled which hasnât made a difference Iâve attached a screenshot of the issue Iâm having. If I just wait it ends up saying that thereâs no network connectionâŠ
