Mac OS Multicast deploy error
-
Server
- FOG Version: 1.4.4
- OS: Ubuntu
- SVN Revision: 6077
Client
- Service Version: USB FOS
- OS: MacOs Sierra
Description
When I try to perform a multicast deployment I get the following error code:
Any idea?
Tnx!
-
You are you usb booting this Mac? You must schedule the job in FOG before you usb boot the target computer.
The error which is a bit cryptic is saying that the target computer has nothing to do so it gives up.
-
Hi,
Multicast task is started before USB loading.
The task is done correctly if I do it individually. This error appears in multicast mode.
Tnx!

@Abuelika Interesting… I can say that I have never tested usb booting with muticasting. I can say that the usb booting method was developed for debugging purposes and not for general use. BUT the changes in the Mac firmware put usb booting into higher use.
I think we can make the usb booting to support multicasting if we get your help (since you have the job already setup). I with your multicasting job scheduled on FOG server will you call this url and post the results here?
http://<fog_server_ip>/fog/service/ipxe/boot.php?mac=000000000000
We can use the output here to create a custom usb boot menu item.

@Abuelika Sorry, we needed to call the fog server with the multicast job running. The url provided will give us the fog iPXE menu design during a multicast job. I need to collect this to translate it into a grub menu. If you can’t get this I will set this up when I get into the office (in about 2 hrs).

@george1421 @Abuelika Is the host you’re trying to boot to registered in FOG? If so, can you create the task? If not, do you have the option to join Multicast Sessions on the USB sticks?
-
@Tom-Elliott I just did what was needed on my FOG-Pi server. I have the info, it looks like we need to call iPXE from Grub because of the questions it asks. I need to go and get ready for work, but I have what I think we need. I need to test an idea I had with usb booting to see if I can call iPXE from grub.
-
@Abuelika I just had an idea on my commute into the office. I need your help to test something for the FOG Project. You will have to make this by your hands. If it works out we can make it easier for people to boot Mac via usb and keep the benefits of the FOG menus.
Please do these steps
- Format a usb flash drive with fat32 that is at least 512MB in size.
- On that formatted usb flash drive create the following directory path
EFI\BOOT
(case shouldn’t matter, but use uppercase for this test). - Take from the fog server’s /tftpboot directory ipxe.efi and copy it to the usb flash in EFI\BOOT directory.
- Rename ipxe.efi (on the usb drive) to
BOOTX64.EFI
- Take from the fog server’s /tftpboot/i386-efi directory ipxe.efi and copy it to the usb flash in EFI\BOOT directory.
- Rename the i386 version of ipxe.efi to
BOOTIA32.EFI
- Eject the usb flash drive
- Take that usb flash to a Mac and usb boot off from it.
The hope is that you will get the FOG iPXE menu with full functionality with FOG and not the limited functions that you get with the current FOG usb booting.
Please try this and let us know how/if it works.
-
Hi,
Boot from the USB, and displays the message initializing device and does not continue …
Tnx George!
-
@Abuelika Oh that is a bad results. That will also hurt our ability to join multicast sessions too since we need the iPXE menu to select the session to join. I will have to think of a new idea now…

It was my mistake
-
@Abuelika OK, now I’m confused, the ipxe.efi idea works or no?
-
The USB works and boots the complete menu.
Now a helpdesk from my team, has gone to test the multi-session in a classroom -
@Abuelika Very good, thank you for testing my idea. If you have success with muticasting please let me know and I will create a tutorial for creating this type of usb boot drive for just the Mac ICT admins to use.

@Abuelika Very nice. I will work on the tutorial later today. Thank you for your help.
Can we also resolve this issue too?
-
