What is the latest version of FOG?
-
I chose the fog installation for my final thesis.
What do you think I should take into account FOG?
What are the strongest points to talk about FOG? -
The current version of FOG at the time of this post is 1.4.3. FOG is under constant development so the ‘current’ version is a bit of a moving number. FOG has a strong group of developers that are constantly evolving FOG as newer hardware and operating systems are released.
FOG is an FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) software. FOG orchestrates / relies on other FOSS or GPL’s software to be able to function.
Talking points FOG is…
Free to use. No per device licensing requirements
Based on the LAMP stack
Can be installed on many flavors of linux
Can be setup in a distributed fashion using a master node and many storage nodes.
Not “what I would call” enterprise ready for very large organizations. Its design is more targeted to the SMB market. The main design concept is one master node and many storage nodes. Each storage node must be able to communicate with the master node 100% of the time or the storage nodes will not function.
Can image target computers using either a unicast transfer (1 target computer == 1 unicast channel, 10 target computers imaging at the same time consumes 10 unicast channels)
Can image many target computers (2-100) at the same time using the multicast channel.
Can support imaging many different target computer OS from Windows, Linux, Mac OS.
Imaging uses a custom high performance linux OS which is called FOS (Fog Operating System).
FOS uses another FOSS application called PartClone to capture and deploy images.
These captured images are then compressed and stored on the FOG server.
FOG Management console is all web based.
FOG Managment can be extended with the use of Plugins
There are a number of plugins that are part of the FOG distribution. Since FOG is opensource anyone can write plugins for FOG to extend its capabilitiesI suggest that you install FOG and perform some imaging tasks to get a better understanding of what FOG can do. Also searching the internet for other write up can be helpful too on your task.

@george1421 Thanks, really thanks, anything else, en que tipo de linux, no puedo instalar FOG?
If you have been reading a lot to understand more the operation of FOG, and also doing tests, thanks for the contribution -
@Jair FOG is supported and tested every night against these Linux distributions.
- Arch
- CentOS7
- CentOS6
- Debian8
- Fedora25
- Fedora26
- Ubuntu17
- Ubuntu16
- Ubuntu14
- Mint18
(Why suse and oracle linux is not parting of the testing I would wonder @Wayne-Workman )
Its possible to pick an old, speciality (thinking puppy linux), variant of a variant distribution FOG may not work. But in general FOG is supported on the core Debian and RHEL based flavors of linux.

@Jair FOG is evolving to a bit more than just imaging. There is hardware “target” inventory, limited client management (power settings, screen resolution, etc), application deployment (called snapins). So FOG offers a bit more than just a pure imaging platform as clonezilla is. Clonezilla is a great tool and in certain situations a better choice for imaging than FOG. The point it they do similar things but their focus is different.

What university? What class? What’s your degree program called?

No real reason why they are not included in the tests - I just try to test the popular distributions. There are some limitations to how many are included in the tests - all the tests run on a 4-core box with 12 gigs of RAM /w SSD storage. Recently, I had to lower all VMs from a gig of ram to 512MB in order to make room for one more VM.
I can probably work in Suse - but for oracle linux, not sure I should give Larry Ellison the pleasure.
