Image stuck in boot loop
-
Hi,
I decided to give FOG a try as we have been doing more and more imaging lately. I setup and installed 0.32 and every thing seems to be working from the server end of it. I decided to test this out on an old Dell Optiplex GX280 I had lying around and see how it worked. I took a 160GB drive installed a fresh copy of windows and used FOG to upload the image (single Partition, resizable) the image size was 6.5GB. I then swapped out the drive for a 40GB and set the image to Deploy to that computer, which it did and it showed no errors and everything looked ok until windows started to boot and the PC is now stuck in a boot loop. It will get to the windows XP screen and then restarts. the weird part is when I take the 40GB drive out and place it on the SATA dock it says it is not accessible. Any help would be appreciated. -
update, after testing on another 160GB drive, the image will work. I still cant get the image to run on a smaller 40GB drive though. I thought I read that you can image to a smaller drive than what the image was created from. Any help would be appreciated.

I’m getting exactly the same problems when imaging Lenovo E520 laptops. PC’s upload their image to the FOG server no problem, and when I tell the host group to deploy the image to the other PC’s, it works fine. However, when the PC’s re-boot, it’s stuck in the boot loop. If I escape the PXE client, the Windows 7 OS loads fine.
ANy ideas to why this might be happening? I’m really impressed with the capabilities of fug thus far, if I could just tweak the minor problems that I’m having, it would be awesome.
Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

Try to kill all of the partitions on the drive before sending the image. I was having the issue because I was putting the drives on a SATA dock to see what was on them before using them. I would then format them while on the dock from a windows 7 PC and I believe that was the issue. I just went into Easus partition manager and deleted all of the partitions, put the drive in the PC and there were no issues. I believe I also recreated the original image because there was an issue in there as well because of that.

Hi Both, I have been having this issue too. Sometimes it hangs when restarting system after imaging. I seem to have a solution/work around. The first thing to look at is the SATA operation in the BIOS, my system only boots successfully when ATA is selected. The second is to look at the boot order, for some reason I have to have the HDD listed first. (This means yourll need to hit F12 to select network interface everytime you want to setup a new pc. Not ideal, but works) Lastly, try updating the kernel. This can be done through the fog interface normally, but the latest version doesnt seem to install correctly. You can download this from the sourceforge website.
I Hope this helps!

Neil and t2i3m, you might want to look into chainloading to resolve your boot order issue.

We have found that reverting back to the PXELinux.0 file that came with version .28 has resolved our boot loop issues.
