What is the best OS currently to use?

Hello,
I am new to this project and have been lurking for a couple days to see what the best options are to install a lab environment.
It seems there are many people that use Unbuntu and Centos. Out of those two from a development perspective which is the best host OS of choice? Please include version as well.
I am capable on either system.
I also see the use of SVN a lot on the forum. Is this just the latest version of the project? Can the SVN be “upgraded” and “downgraded”?

Ubuntu 12 and 13 are fine. I recommend that you do not use ubuntu 14. any of the modern Centos’s should be fine as well.
SVN is the development “bleeding edge” release. It contains some bug fixes that have not been put into the official release, but it also changes daily, and contains code that is less tested and, on rare occasions, it can be incomplete with half implemented features/fixes.
“downgrading” is not really supported at all. you are expected to backup your server before any upgrades so that you can revert to backup if something goes wrong. -

I guess what I am getting at is I want to start off on the right foot so I will take your recommendation of using the latest Centos. Should I get 32 bit for any reason or is 64 ok?
I am more familiar with that anyway so it’s fine by me.I noticed the video about changing the kernel and using a kitchen sink config file. Is that file the one that is used under a normal install or does each user need to recompile to get best driver support?

there isn’t any reason not to use 64bit, and i don’t know what video you’re talking about but Tom has some of the best driver support possible included in the default kernel.

There is a video section on the home page.
When you select a Centos install type do you do an “everything” install or do you install a very basic install type? -
i never noticed that video section before, lol.
i’ve never installed fog on centos, so you may want to seek out the advice from others on the subject.
I personally use Ubuntu server installs without a gui
the fog install script will most likely install everything you need -

I use Debian 7

i think a few bugs with multicast are being ironed out for some environments at the moment. that said, i don’t use multicast. i don’t see anything in that log that would stop you from using fog for standard unicast imaging tasks
