FOG 0.32 Differnet OS Images, Same Machine
-
Hello All,
I would like to know if it is possible to deploy an image of one machine onto another of a different OS.
For example:
We have two machines XP and Seven.
XP has uploaded an image ‘xp_image’ and is running Windows XP.
Seven has uploaded an image ‘seven_image’ and is running Windows 7.
Is it possible to deploy seven_image onto machine XP? -
I have just performed a successful deployment of a Windows 7 image onto a machine that was running Windows XP. The Windows 7 image was a “Multiple Partition Image - Single Disk (Not Resizable)”.
When I initially tried I used a Windows 7 image that was “Single Partition (NTFS Only, Resizable)”. This resulted in an error: “[/images/image_location] must be a valid regular file (not a directory,…”.

That is correct we recommend using the Multi partition options for windows 7 because of the way windows creates the partitions. the ONLY time I would recommend using single partition, okay so I wouldn’t recommend it ever but, if you were absolutely positive that you told windows not to install that 100mb partition at the start of the disc. Even then I recommend one of the multipartition options just in case.
As for deploying your windows xp image to them, log into your web gui, find the host in the list of host machines. Click on the machine and there for the image change it to your xp image update, and create a task.
Should you wish to deploy your windows 7 image again, simply change the image associated to the host, save and create a task.

Thank you for your help!
I have just tried to deploy and XP image, “Single Partition (NTFS Only, Resizable)”, to a machine that was currently running Windows 7. Unfortunately, I received the following error: “Unable to locate Windows 7 image file sys.img.000”. I believe that might be a result of the XP image being single partition. I will try again with a Multiple Partition Image, but I will need to reinstall XP since I just imaged Windows 7 over it…

This probably has something to do with partitions, try the multipartition settings and if push comes to shove look up my walkthrough on removing partitions and adding them in again.

Don’t forget you probably need to set the OSID on the host.

Just wanted to chime in and say I install windows 7 as default from disc (ie. 100mb partition + Second partition as OS) and for years I have always used Windows 7 image that was "Single Partition (NTFS Only, Resizable).
Never had an issue

I’m also to guess that you were sysprepping/generalizing your images first?
