We are currently using multiple Ubuntu 16.04 Desktops running in VM’s with FOG on them. I’d like to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu (20.x) but would like to know what is the ‘recommended’ Linux distro and which is better to use…desktop or server? Are there any known issues running Ubuntu 20.x desktop.

      Thanks in advance!

@JYost I’d definitely suggest using server.

While we do try to make upgrades with the FOG installer possible even across distro versions there have been so many changes in repos and packages between 16.04 and 20.04 - I would rather recommend to take a full database dump, install FOG fresh and clean and import the database and sync over the /images directory. I am sure it will take way less time than trying to dis-upgrade from 16.04 to 20.04 and as well update FOG.

Web GUI issue? Please check apache error (debian/ubuntu: /var/log/apache2/error.log, centos/fedora/rhel: /var/log/httpd/error_log) and php-fpm log (/var/log/php*-fpm.log)

@JYost For the distro decision you might want to check out the “Daily Clean Installation Results” in Wayne’s signature.

@wayne-workman i managed to go from 16 to 18 (server) fine… but when i tried to go 18 to 20 it all went wrong so just rolled the VM back. i will when 18 falls out of support do what Seb suggests and move the images over and the DB to a fresh install… after all my VM started life as v 14 of ubuntu so probably due a fresh install.

We will be building a new VM with Ubuntu 20.x…it won’t be an in-place upgrade. I will post any issues we run into…fingers crossed.
