    • Fog using dhcp and dns from exisiting network

      I have read over the wiki on how to get this working on an existing network and having some issues. I know we are using cisco routers and we have things pointed correctly.

      I am able to boot up and it grabs and Ip address and then all the other information. It just fails at pxe.

      I have an ip address, subnet mask , and gateway.

      error is

      pxe-e32 tftp open timeout
      pxe-m0f exiting intel boot agent.

      If i could paypal someone to look into the server to make sure it is correct I am willing to do that. I just want to make sure i have that part setup. I normally only do this on an isolated network and have no issues.

    • RE: Fog PXE Boot issues in VMware

      i have finally figured out how to get vm workstation working with no problems. My computer is plugged into real network at the time. I have to plug into the isolated network. When it pulls an IP address I then go and disable the adapter and enable it again. it then gets the ip address again. I then run ipconfig /flushdns.

      After i do that and only then will i start VM workstation. i will go to the vm and go back to my snapshot. before i open it i always make sure the settings are showing bridged. I then power on the vm to the saved stated and run a ipconfig to make sure the computer and vm have actual same IPs in the subnet. Then run a flushdns on the vm. Then i sysprep and then boot to firmware on the vm. Then i pick network boot.

      This has worked 7 times with no issues. I am sure i could cut out some steps but it is real easy for me to do all of it real quick. I only check to make sure it is bridged mode once.

      Once i started to do this vm workstation work everytime and even on VM reboots.

      I hope this helps someone else out.

      Oh and i disable wireless first if you are using that.

      @george1421 @Sebastian-Roth yes the only issues is vm workstation and it is in bridge mode. I just got it to work once so far. It is uploading the image and nothing changed at all. Just on that restart I did it just via network IP 4. I booted to firmware and then picked network card.

      This drives me nuts .

      @george1421 yes the fog server should be handling dns and dhcp. The computer gets an ip address each time and dns. I have a spare fog server i am booting up now but it had the same issues before .

    • RE: Fog PXE Boot issues in VMware

      @george1421 my setup is simple. I have a computer that is connected to netgear switch. It is an unmanaged switch. It then connects to the fog server . That is the only computers on this switch. We do not have it on a network at all but this isolated network. I have never ran into this issue. Before i brought it here it was pushing out images all day when you pulled the image- booting a computer up and then pulling the image from the fog server. One thing I did notice on the fog server that it is not putting a gateway in IPconfig. Not sure why. I am going to pull out my old laptop fog server . Do i need to get the special file off of it ? or are those files the same from server to server. That fog server is 1.0.5

      @mmoore5553 @george1421 I can confirm that it is hit or miss. It is very annoying. I would put the image on exsi but we have to have it on an isolated network. I just find it odd since this just started happening and i never had it before. I was using version 12 before but then it started doing the issue. Now I am back to not getting it to boot.

      Something i really hate being the guy that maintains the golden image.

      @george1421 I have finally got it resolved. I went back to vm workstation support and they updated a file in their install . Then it magically started to work

      They think the install file was corrupt on their side

      Too odd.

      Thanks everyone helping

      I was running the latest build on version 15

      @Tom-Elliott if I reboot the computer it will find fog fine. No issues there at all. Just when I am in vmworkstation pro. it is VM software like virtualbox.

    • RE: Fog PXE Boot issues in VMware

      I am sorry I am on an isolated network. Just a unmanged switch. I can boot any computer hooked up and pxe works like a champ to push the image. The only issue that I run into is uploading an image to the fog server. It gets stuck on that screen. I have tried bridge and nat. None of them work.

      I was wondering if fog had an iso that I can try to boot from to get to the fog server. I am running latest version of fog and it works fine if I boot a computer and image it. I have not tried an upload to it. I can not even get it to boot from the vm to drop and image in the vm.

      I have done this before in the past on an older fog server with no issues. I have even turned that one on and get the same message when using vmworkstation. I am at a loss when it works on a normal computer .

    • Fog PXE Boot issues in VMware

      I have open a ticket with VMware and they say it is not there issue. I can not boot from VMware workstation pro. I have bios set to UEFI. Not sure why. I am on windows 10. I have tried bridged and nat. I am unable to get it to pxe boot. It stops at the screen and says start pxe over ip4. I am not sure why. I know I can reboot the computer and then to the setup screen and I can select uefi network boot ip and it works fine. I just do not know why UEFI is not working in VMware workstation. Has anyone seen this. I can push an image out all day using fog. I just can not upload one from vmworkstation. Is there a bootable fog image iso that I can try ?

      @george1421

      i swear i can not win. I had a talk to management and we have to use ubuntu desktop. I am unable to get it to start.

      I am not sure but at the end where it is checking web services it fails. I went back to the ubuntu that is working on the laptop. I am installing newest version and that is the only spot it fails.

      I have a second network adapter . i went through the normal install and choose no for router portion. i assigned an ip address and made the fog server dhcp and dns. Everything appears to install but the starting and checking status of web services fail.

      not sure where to go from here

      @george1421

      the problem is that i have installed linux over 2 times and then the same files and folders never exist. I will try with the second nic card as maybe that is the issue.

      i do not know why .fogsettings file and the tftp folder is missing on both new installs.

      @george1421

      Now here is the problem that i have …

      I go into computer and then look at all the folders and files.

      I do not have /tftpboot

      I do not have anything under /opt/fog. No folders or files listed under there.

      I do have the dncpd.conf

      that is why i thought i had a bad install. I see the on the old fog server on the laptop. Those locations are there. I install fog under the root admin. I always enable that and do all installs under root in ubuntu. Forced habit of seeing files failed in other software.

      That is what got me wondering why the files where gone. I can find them under /var/lib/tftpboot and the .fogsettings I can not find at all.

      i am able to go to the ip address and open up the gui with no issues.

      i am using 1.05 install and follow same instructions on the wiki . I wanted to be sure i was not going crazy .

      That sounds like a good idea. I will go ahead an get a usb to network adapter. I have one at home for the nintendo switch. I will install linux and run the install again. I assume I would just setup and pick the network card in the settings ?

      just upper management says it is in isolated network. I have it hooked to internet and download everything and then i go under network and interfaces file and static set the ip address . I only have one network card .

      we have a lab where we take all the computers and reimage them.

      @george1421

      oh how horrible of me. I am sorry i should have put that information.

      1. the fog server will be dhcp and dns
      2. we have a small switch and same vlan.
      3. this is an isolated network
      4. This is the odd part. I am beginning to think this is not pxe but dhcp. I do not get any error message. I do not get anything on the screen. It just goes to no boot device. If i take my laptop which i have fog installed it will boot right away. This is an older version of fog. I am trying to get a desktop version to set up in a location.

      I have checked and dhcp service is running and other services are running

      I have reinstalled linux and fog twice and the same results.

      I thought since i was missing the folders on the root of C that i got a bad install.
