• Imaging with FOG and managing computers with Intune/Autopilot, is this possible?

Has anyone done anything like this, is it even possible?
The place where I currently work was bought out and let’s say their imaging solution is non existent. They currently have the vendor put a generic image on Dell laptops, after which they still have to install apps and apply Windows updates etc which takes about 3 hours overall.

I showed how I can do this using FOG in under 5 minutes BUT they want to manage the computers using Intune, and having the ability to recover the install in case the customer needs to reinstall Windows from home. Any ideas?
You’ve verified that the image actually exists in the directory? Is it in /images? or is it in /images/dev ?
They are under /images.

Please look at my logs that I provided. Other than start from scratch I don’t know what else to do…

Just to check, I deleted the old, copied T510 image from /images, created a new T510 image from scratch with OSID 5, single disk, multiple partitions, not resizeable. Tried again to assign a host to it and failed with “no valid image”.

Hi Tom, and thank you for the quick response. OS id and partition type etc are correct. I did notice that this started happening *after I mounted the external drive and set it to /images. I will get those logs and put them up for you in a few.

• Migrated from 0.32 to 1.2, need some help with /images

Hi everyone, I have been using FOG for a bit over 3 years, version 0.32. I decided a couple of days ago to move to Ubuntu 14 (previously on 12.0.4) and FOG 1.2

I have been able to install FOG, add sysrescuecd to the pxe menu and boot from it, imported the old host database and even copied an image from the original server and could deploy a host using instructions from http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/transfer-images-from-0-32-to-fresh-1-2-0-1-2-0-cant-see-images.11671/

My images resided on an external drive in the old server so I moved the driver over, mounted it and added it to /images and it does mount and show up BUT* even after manually creating an image that exactly matches the old image name, checking permissions etc, when I try to associate a host with an image it does not take and if I try to deploy the host I get this:

“Download task failed to create for LU092652 with image
Image is not valid”

Getting my images to be recognized is all that’s left for me_ and yes, they are set to partimage. Believe me I looked everywhere before deciding to post here but right now I’m stuck so any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

• RE: Renaming computers
I don’t know of a way to do this from Windows to Fog as like was said above Fogs hostname changer dictates that side of things.

@Kansuke, it sounds like the way you’re using the hostname within fog is not quite right. You mention

The mac address is how fog identifies an individual machine but the hostname can be anything you like so theres nothing stopping you from naming the machine based on asset tag. You can do this when you first associate the machine with fog either at the pc when doing full host name and registration or via the web gui.

@Jmacavali: If you do need to rename again once the pc is imaged say once you’ve deployed to a specific room, a simple way might be to maintain the host list in a csv file in the format required by fog to import and export hosts. You can get an example from wiithin fog itself. Put that csv file on a share accessible by all involved and have them update the hostname based on the room they put the machines in and then import the host.csv file back into fog once done

Still a manual process but quicker than doing within the GUI one by one.

Another alternative which would avoid the need to rename the machines at all would be to use fogs groups function. Just name the pcs as normal via asset tag and once you know what room they’re in put them in a group by that name. Doesn’t help you if you want the names to show up in AD or something with the room name appended but if you need a quick way to determine location its a simple workaround.

I’ve found with fairly regular kit moves even in a site of only 300 odd machines that a naming convention based on location is a pain in the rear end. Much better to name based on serial number or asset tags (which don’t change) and use fog or OU’s within AD to group the machines logically. Just my tuppence worth.

Tom, I understand about the mac address but when you go under host management, the host names are their mac addresses by default. What I need is a way for fog to grab their asset tags on the fly and name the hosts using those instead of mac addresses. There has to be an automated way of doing this rather than having to do manual registration_when you have to image a bunch of pcs at a time it does add up…

• How to use asset tag as pc name instead of mac address?

I am able to join the domain successfully but Fog uses the mac address as the computer name. Is there any way to set it to use the asset tag instead? Any help with this will be hugely appreciated!
Currently I have them named by the tag number we assign to them. I want to include the room number as well once it’s determined where they will be placed.
How did you manage to do that? Currently I am so close; I can join the domain automatically but I need to use the asset tag as the computer name instead of the mac address.

• RE: "Could not find ramdisk image"

Ok, after changing the label boot parameters to this:
LABEL fog.GParted
kernel fog/kernel/bzImage
append iso initrd=fog/Gparted/gparted.iso raw
MENU LABEL TEST - GParted 11 Disk Partitioning Utility
TEXT HELP
General Disk Partitioning Utility
ENDTEXT

the image boots partially until I get this error message in the picture attached. I feel that I am getting close, just don’t know enough about Linux to do figure this out on my own yet.

• "Could not find ramdisk image"

I am a new Fog user and at work, I was tasked with trying to have a Gparted live iso boot using memdisk. On the production Fog server (VM running .32 on Ubuntu) the admin created this custom label :

LABEL gparted2
kernel gparted2/memdisk
append iso initrd=gparted2/systemrescuecd-x86-2.6.0.iso raw
MENU LABEL TEST - GParted 11 Disk Partitioning Utility
TEXT HELP
When you have a client machine try to boot from gparted it fails after getting to an error message that complains about not being able to find a live filesystem, and also about having job control turned off. I looked for possible solutions to this and tried a few things but nothing works_I think there is a size limitation as far as what memdisk can boot???

So in order to test further I downloaded the .30 VM Server/client combo, set them up in Virtual box, upgraded Fog to .32 in the vm and the two VMs communicated just fine. My issue now is that when I drop the same Gparted iso along with memdisk in the vm tftfboot/fog/Gparted folder that I created(after editing the default menu like so):
LABEL fog.GParted
kernel fog/Gparted/memdisk
append iso initrd=fog/Gparted/gparted.iso raw
MENU LABEL TEST - GParted 11 Disk Partitioning Utility
TEXT HELP
General Disk Partitioning Utility
ENDTEXT

I get this “Could not find ramdisk image” error message. The permissions in the Gparted folder are correct (fog:root) set recursively so I don’t know what else could cause this to happen. Any ideas?
