Description

It would be really nice if the snapin logs on the server showed which hosts that it was being pushed to. Also it would be nice to have a feature to limit which snapins that were included in the log.

An example of this would be…

Set the date range…
Set which snap-ins you would like to include in the report…
Set whether or not to display host names…

That way you could see which machines you would need to follow up with.

I did have two hosts that after I ran the uninstaller it failed to remove everything. The uninstaller finished but when I ran the installer it failed. I had to go into the registry and delete every entry that had anything to do with FOG. Than re-install worked.

Here is a log file from a client that is having the updating issue… It appears that it’s not authenticating with the server. I tried resetting encryption and that failed to resolve this. I left this one un-resolved. So if their is a fix you’d like to try or have me try, I certainly can. Short of the following resolution…

I had another one that had this same error on it. My only resolution is to do a re-install on the client and restart the service. Than everything is fine…

So an update to this… The automatic start issue with the FOG client seems to be a non-issue. It WILL start automatically, if I reboot the system after the installer is ran. I did finally get that figured out.

The issue of the client running and not responding/updating is still there though…

As you can see it quit checking in as of 1/24… It’s logging into the domain and performing all of our network tasks just fine. I’m sure if I go in and remove the client and re-install it it will be fine. But…

Here is a screen shot of my services after I installed new client…

You will see that Fog Service is set to automatic but is not started. I do not have a FOG log from this host to upload.
I’m going to dig through a few more labs and see if I can’t find another example where the service is running but is not checking in with the FOG server…

Let me know what else you need.

Description

I have never had any luck having the Fog Service start automatically after the service is installed (70% fail to start). I have tried waiting. I have tried restarting the computer. None of this helps. I use the Smart Installer on most (90%) installs. I install most clients via the SetupComplete script. I have followed the FOGWiki for my images and have the script set to restart the service. In most cases this works (hence the 30% success rate!). The times I’ve been noticing the service not starting is on the one off clients I’m installing manually. All of my stand alone service installs have failed to start automatically.

Also, I have noticed that many of my “old” clients running 0.11.5 do not update automatically to the new 0.11.9 client … The client service in most of the non-update situations is running. I have tried restarting the service. I have tried resetting encryption on these clients. Nothing seems to help. The client doesn’t seem to check in with the server after I updated to “current”. The only thing that seems to help the non-updater/non-check-in clients is to re-install the FOG service.

Any incite on what I might be possibly missing on this would be helpful.

I realise that the new client is different than the old client but, correct me if I’m wrong, going from 0.11.5 to 0.11.9 isn’t that big of a leap.

Thanks! I managed to get a script made to run in powershell that will install the fog service correctly. I ended up having to download the original file from the server and using that. The MSI file that I created was bombing for some reason. Either way I’m glad I got it working!

Now my next question is does anyone have any good wiki’s on how to run a powershell script in GPO on a group basis not a login script? I’m new to this stuff so any ideas are helpful! Thanks!

I’ve been trying to get the FOG Client to install with GPO but have been failing miserably.

My procedure is this…
I create a group in AD for the lab computers I’m testing my script on…
Create a new group policy.
Add the package (MSI file) in to be installed.
Apply policy to said group.
Run GPUpdate /force on the server.
Run GPUpdate /force on clients in said group…

I have set the IP correctly in the MSI file using Orca. The MSI file will run correctly attended. The IP comes in correctly and everything installs. I have tried running the MSI file from the command line with the quiet options found in the FOG Wiki and it fails to run.

I’ve done all of the above with admin rights. I’ve set the permissions where the install file is located to allow read and execute for Everyone.

I’m at a loss as to why this will not run correctly.

Any advice is appreciated!!!

An update to this… I was able to use Orca and change the IP address in the MSI file to reflect our static IP of our server.

Also, is their a way I can set an IP address within the installer instead of using fogserver as the hostname within the installer? I just changed my hostname on my server to reflect the “fogserver” name but my DNS is taking forever to update on my AD server…

I used SVN to update my server… What was posted was from one of the FOG clients FOG.log files.

Well… I’m back to working on my FOG servers again now that I finally have some time to update things…

So I just updated to the latest and greatest version (Running Version 1.3.0-RC-14 SVN Revision: 5974). I’m still noticing that on several of my clients the FOG service is not automatically starting. This is even on fresh installs of the client. I check the FOG service in Services and it says it’s set to automatically start but that never happens. I end up having to go into services and manually start it the first time to get it to work. The version of the client I am installing is:

Like I said, once I manually start the client we are Golden… But… It will not automatically start for some reason. Everything else as far as settings is the same throughout my images.

I also notice that the service fails periodically and I have to manually re-start the service. I was really hoping that upgrading to the latest version would be the fix to this but it doesn’t seem to be the case.

Let me know if their are any log files you’d like me to upload and if so where I can find them.

That’s how I"m currently sysprepping. I think my problem is the lack of an else or else if statement in my SetupComplete file that isn’t letting the script finish due to other things I have in it. I’ve been having my SetupComplete file install my antivirus software. Generally this works. However, with Sophos, if our setup file is out of date it will not install. This can prove to be more work than what it’s worth.

I’ll be updating to RC-14 today! I know it’s a simple thing to do. I just have to remember to do it. Ha!
