• FOG desktop app - Sys Tools

This is a vb.net project I been working on. It’s purpose is to copy profiles, image and install snapins and several other functions. I tried to build it so anything you can do from the FOG WebUI you can do from this app. I cannot provide any support and as always use at your own risk. Some of the vb.net code will need to be configured to fit your environment.

Thanks for the interest. We are hopeful the first version will be ready for wide spread debugging in 2 weeks. The next significant update will include the Snap-in interface.

The first 4 are in design. The latter two we will have to evaluate.

• We are building a desktop application and a new tray client

We are wondering if anyone would like to purchase it when it’s done? It’s fully integrated with the fog database and will possibly be a plugin for fog. Here’s a screen shot the application itself it is fully functional. We are working on the fog tray client.

• Delete old surplus hosts from FOG?

Is there a date stamp in the DB that will show the last time the host checked in with the FOG server? Or is there another way to delete old hosts en masse?

• RE: Deploying a single snapin to a group

This code worked for me.
<tr>
<td class=“c”><a href=“?node=tasks&type=group&direction=onesnap&noconfirm=<?php print $groupid; ?>”><img src=“./images/snap.png” /><p><?php print _(‘Deploy Single Snapin’); ?></p></a></td>
<td><p><?php print _(‘This option allows you to send a single snapin to a host. (Requires FOG Service to be installed on client)’); ?></p></td>
</tr>

We have NEC ip phones but they didn’t require us to setup anything for them in the DHCP server. You may want to checkout this link.

I’m getting ready to just start dipping my toes in the water with a small-scale bench deployment.

Downloading Ubuntu 11.1 desktop edition (I wanted a GUI since I barely know linux, it makes me feel better.) --would it be a lot better to install server for the full deployment? or does it not matter much?

Second, for my test run, all I’ve got for hardware is a Dell 745, which is a midrange Core2Duo, with 2GB RAM. I think this should be fine but wanted to make sure.

Are there any problems with Ubuntu 11 and FOG that I should be aware of?

Any tips and tricks would be appreciated.

OH and can you expound a bit more about “driver packs” ? The only time I’ve heard these referenced was with SmartDeploy but it was specific to their product. I am not well-versed with driver injection/AIK/Sysprep at all, I do a very basic Sysprep when I split off our 9 models from the main master, but that’s it.

Yes, the 745 will work we have several hundred. I haven’t try to run it on Ubuntu 11 but it works great on 10.4 LTS which you may want to use instead of 11 because it has long term support. Basically, I prepare the PC for imaging, download the driver packs to a folder named Dell. Run the SysPrep Driver Scanner that enumerates the paths to the inf files and places the paths in the registry so windows can scan through and find the correct inf for the PC hardware, this step you only have to do once to get the drivers injected into the image. Then run sysprep. Good luck.

• RE: Is FOG for us?

We’ve been using fog for 3 years on 3000+ XP\Win7 on about 10 different models of Dell PCs. Other than occasional tweaking it woks like a charm. We use one image for XP and one for WIN7 for all models (excluding one or two laptop models). We also use driver packs for driver integration.
