RE: Use partimage to restore fog images
Tried a windows 7 image again this time created 2 ntfs partitions on blank target 1 TB HDD within test laptop ; sda1 , sda2.
Installed image 1 (system reserved) over the top of Sda1 and the rest of the
image 2 over Sda2.Ran check on both parts after.
System failed to boot!
Wish this would work for me

win 7 i could only choose one of the 2 images that make win 7 (system reserved and the C:) so I picked the fist one (system reserved) said experimental NTFS blah blahā¦hit okā¦nothing happenedā¦there is an OK button and im hitting it and nothing happensā¦by fluke I hit escape and the i got to are you sure you want to restore then it WORKEDā¦but the drive didnt have the partiton on it??? even after checking ā¦how do you do it for windows 7 with the two images??
also windows XP test - incorrect file compression - aborting
sorry to be a pain

RE: Use partimage to restore fog images
on a blank disk no partitions show up in part image - so should we just create them ? then overwrite one by one - obvs coz 7 got 2 parts yeah bro?;)
gonna have a go with parted magic as opposed to ubuntu with partimage installed so we on the same page

RE: Use partimage to restore fog images
hey thats ace thanks alot !
I just managed to almost do it but lots of problems, I copied images for XP, 7 and Vista. I downloaded partimage into it and then had a play aroundā¦couldnāt get any of them to work, the a vista image from gave me invalid file system error or something so left it alone. Be interesting to see how it can be done. Thanks for this!!!
edit although I have a horrible feeling my images are in the wrong the format - I used the NTFS resizeable jobs, I bet it needs a different one?

RE: Use partimage to restore fog images
Ah well because I will be taking systems in to image from Clients and with the FOG server here its all fine to use that. But when I am out and about I havenāt worked out a way to make my FOG server portable in a VMBOX yet so need up to date images of what ever OS I could be faced with needing imaging. So If I can just whip out a copy of all the images on to a USB disk and boot from a CD with partimage. I have actually tried this using the partimage bundled with Parted Magic CD but cant for the life of me work out how to use it. Seems like all it will let me do ever is save an imageā¦cant see where to point to the usb and pick one of the fog images. Can you help with that? Thanks for the reply!!;)

Fog images, third party cloning tools and portability
Hi everyone
Just recently got set up with a VIRTUAL BOX instance of FOG and its working pretty darn good I must say. As I am going about getting all my images all set up and learning my way round the system, a few things have occurred to me which I need to get advice from some more advanced FOG users.
I am setting up a PC business and when I looked into the best way to deploy OSās to perhaps a few machines at once or even just the one, with all updates and softwareās ready to go, I hit upon sysprep usage and FOG as being the best. I did try some of the Windows solutions like WDS but seemed way over complicated for what I wanted so settled for FOG and it does just what I want.
The first problem I hit upon was the āstorage nodeā ethic, if you like. I wanted to host my images on a freenas CIFS share, but I simply couldnāt get past the permissions problem. Even though I pointed it to the folder on the server (//freenas/images), FOG always said it didnāt exit and gave me an access denied error. I was wondering if that was even possible. Does FOG need an actual designated other server set up as a Storage Node to work? In the end I have just made a huge VM box and do it all in that. No big deal if not.
The next thing is quite important and I hope some one can help. I will be mobile for some of my tasks and when I need to reimage a system Iād like to be able to take my FOG images with me and use them. However I donāt know what application can clone a system using a FOG image? I was hoping some one may have experience of this and let me know. I think partclone on the parted magic CD or Systemrescue CD might do it but Iām not sure thats the right thing to do.
So if that isnt possible could I take my Fogserver with me on a laptop in the Virtual Box. Has any one had experience of that, if so please let me know how you do it.
The other thing I was wondering about was bypassing the registration process. Is there a way to just boot a system from LAN then have a list of all the images on the server to choose from and then just image it right off the bat! Can this be done, if so how? And thanks.
Oh and one more thing. Can I do this over the internet? lol Lets say hit a duff system with a need to reload windows. Boot to LAN, use etherboot or perhaps some other method and get an image to come down that way? Not too fussed about that though if its not possible.
Summary
- Can FOG created images be used by a third party application like partclone or clonezilla or otherwise?
- Can A virtual FOG server be made portable for cloning solutions when I am out on the road?
- Can I remove the need to register machines and just have a quick image menu to quickly start cloning/restoring a system?
- Can FOG servers be used over the internet? As in boot from a internet connected house/office and image from my server at home to the system?
Thanks in advance.
