As it states /tftpboot/

If you look in your root directory of your disk drive you will see the folder mentioned
Download and extract the latest SYSLINUX (Currently using 4.04): http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux/
Copy/Overwrite the following files to /tftpboot/:
syslinux-4.04/com32/modules/chain.c32
syslinux-4.04/com32/menu/vesamenu.c32
syslinux-4.04/core/pxelinux.0
Again look in your root directory of your disk drive and you will see the folder /tftpboot/ and inside another folder /pxelinux.cfg/ and finally the file you need to edit is named default.
Graphical menu
If you are using the Graphical menu modify fog.local in your /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default to look like this
LABEL fog.local
kernel chain.c32
append hd0
MENU DEFAULT
MENU LABEL Boot from hard disk
TEXT HELP
Boot from the local hard drive.
If you are unsure, select this option.

• RE: Multicast not deploying

I have ran a couple of tests, I started with the log file and at first it was a problem with my nic card being eth1 instead of eth0.

I adjusted the settings and changed the network card to eth0 and rebooted, now it reports properly. But now my units only sit at the blue “Please Wait” screen. I can see the task is active and it is a multicast, I can even see that one of them supposedly is deploying and the rest are in the que. When I physically check the machine it is still sitting at the blue “Please wait” screen. I left them over night and this morning they are still at the blue screen.

so I began here : http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/wiki-troubleshooting-multicast.22/

I ran the tests and when I do the commands in the debug mode they complete with out a problem. I will post my log in just a moment when I get back on the server. Its not the WHOLE file but it is a section of the past hour.

I noticed in the log it didn’t show my commands from Debug but they did complete successfully.

But when I look in the other log it appears there is a machine that is not reporting in, I’ve tried rebooting them all multiple times 😞

• Multicast not deploying

I searched and I found loads of information but none of the descriptions matched the issue I am facing.

I have a group created, 30 machines registered to the group, Each mac Address is only in the list once.

I click the deploy Multicast button, it says "
All 30 machines were queued without error."
but then it never actually does anything. I check in the Task management for “Active Multicasts” and I see the task there stating it is at 0%. All machines reboot and load the PXE menu fine, but then 3 seconds later the task is not there and none of my imaging is started, help would be greatly appreciated, where do I need to begin searching for errors?

Each individual machine has a file created for it in the pxelinux.cfg folder.

How do I verify that Multicast is still enabled and I didn’t turn it off someplace?

Thanks in advance!!!

Check to make sure you have enabled the WOL settings for the NIC card in windows.

Make sure you have set the settings for WOL in the BIOS as well.

WOL is a funky, and finicky piece that should never have been considered out of Beta test stages as there are a NUMBER of things that can interrupt your WOL signals.

Are there any routers or switches between the server and the hosts? check to see if any of them are a culprit for rejecting WOL packets, I know most Cisco switches will pass the WOL packets but some reject it until certain settings are changed.

I have a walk through for enabling WOL in Windows 7, if you like I can post it.

I know most of these are probably redundant and you’ve already verified, but it can’t hurt to double check.

Do the units display the FOG PXE menu?

• Update Registry when FOG client changes Host.

I’m interested in working on the FOG client a bit. We use Novell in our network and we have to update the registry to reflect the host name of the machine in order for our auto login scripts to work.

I’d like to know how to add a simple registry command to the FOG client so when it updates the host name it updates the registry with the same host data. Ideas are welcome!!!

Thanks for your help!

• RE: Continually getting "Searching for server (DHCP)...No IP." message when trying to boot Fog Client

What are you using as a Virtual setup? Are you using VMWare or VirtualBox?

VMWare works with SCSI drives, which fog doesn’t exactly like, if you are going to use VMWare you NEED to create a custom kernel with the VMWare drivers. This is really simple to do, shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. I had to do this in order to work with VMWare and FOG.

You can refer to this post here on how to build a custom kernel. http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/request-for-kernel-compiling-info-please-read.4045/ Look at the second post from Ozzy it is a beautifully written guide on creating your own kernel. Only use what you need, the more you add to the kernel the longer it takes to download and load.

You may also want to take a look at the BIOS Settings and disable to ACPI and a few other settings, FOG doesn’t like some of them. But this seems odd as you didn’t download an image so the hard drive should boot normally, unless it can’t find the hard drive because of the hard drive type. I recommend trying a custom built kernel.

• RE: Continually getting "Searching for server (DHCP)...No IP." message when trying to boot Fog Client

At this point, I would say it is getting stuck trying to load the pxelinux.0.

You don’t have to follow all the directions in that post I gave you, you just have to follow the instructions for setting the next-server, but because you are internalizing the server and the virtual machine you shouldn’t really need to set much of anything because the DHCP server is the fog server 😕

Try running wireshark and capturing some packets to make sure all of the packet is getting to where it needs to be! Maybe they get lost after receiving the first part of the packet and not the rest, or maybe NONE of the packet is reaching the destination.

I would also still recommend trying the proxyDHCP service. Since you are working with virtual machines, make a snapshot and try to the DNSMasq setup and see if that helps any. If not, you can revert to your previous snapshot without problems. Take a look here on how to set up proxydhcp service. • RE: Continually getting "Searching for server (DHCP)...No IP." message when trying to boot Fog Client

1.) I’m glad you solved part of your problem!

2.) To set up your next-server and file name refer to this link
http://fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/Modifying_existing_DHCP_server_to_work_with_FOG

I would say yes, the reason it is now hanging is because it doesn’t actually know where to find the pxelinux.0 file.

alternatively you can use a command to make sure that the tftp-hpa service is working correctly and you can pull the pxelinux.0 from the server by using the following commands.

From your FOG server test out tftp
tftp -v X.X.X.X -c get pxelinux.0

From a Windows PC run at the cmd prompt:
tftp x.x.x.x get pxelinux.0

If tftp & xinetd are running your should get:
Received XXXX bytes in X.X seconds…

This will verify that the location is correct and the file can be grabbed, it is a good idea to run wireshark and look for the packets being sent and received, when I set mine up only part of the file go to where it needed to be and I had to enable the proxyDHCP stuff. these command help immensely.

3.) The ip address of the Server is the only thing that matters when restarting the tftp service because the server is what the hosts are going to talk to and if tftp has not been assigned an IP address, it can’t be found! So when you reboot your server you can manually restart the service, or you can set it up so it will be automatically started after an IP address has been assigned, or after a certain amount of time,

edit your /etc/rc.local and include
/bin/sleep30 && /etc/init.d/tftpd-hpa restart

this is what is required to delay the start up of the tftp service at boot.

I found another resolve on an Ubuntu site but no one has confirmed if the process works or not, I will post it here if you want to give it a shot and tell me if it works, this should actually automate the tftp-hda and cause it to WAIT for an IP address to be assigned, which is a much better option, if it works…

I am experiencing this problem in Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop (package: tftpd-5.2-1ubuntu1). The tftpd daemon does not start when the computer starts up, even though the tftpd-hpa job starts. • RE: Continually getting "Searching for server (DHCP)...No IP." message when trying to boot Fog Client

Do you have a DHCP server in your network? Why did you install the FOG DHCP service? It is generally a very bad idea to introduce more than one DHCP Server.

You can use FOG as the DHCP Server, but if you already have one I suggest not using this service.

(IF YOU HAVE A DHCP SERVER) Try re-installing FOG without using the DHCP server. And then come back and tell us what the error is.

RECOMMENDATIONS

I recommend a 10.04 Flavor of Ubuntu myself, because I HATE having to type in commands to get services to start again on boot like the later flavors of Ubuntu have, while this is NOT your main concern it could be in the future, so please keep this in mind. Any reboot of the server or restart of the server is going to require you to restart the tftp service after each successful boot. It will tell you the service is running (because it is) but the service started before the NIC actually had an IP address and needs to be restarted after an IP address has been issued.

Secondly, Did you set up your Next Server and your pxelinux.0 (<— note that is a ZERO not an O) options 066 & 067 respectively?

You can install FOG without using the DHCP service and if you STILL need a dhcp server you can install the DNSMasq service which works really nicely I use it in my buildings.

Why not let windows partition the drive? It only preserves 100 mb, you’ll hardly miss it 🙂

yeah that sounds to me like it is something to do with the ACER hardware or the way it handles the hard drives, I don’t recommend them, but all of our Tangent computers work well with FOG 🙂

If you are still having issues I recommend using a custom built kernel, I had to do so to use VMWare, and I take back what I said before about VMWare, Stay on Virtual box, it’s a much easier program to use!!!

Hmm, damn.

Well I’m interested in figuring this out too, so lets not give up on it. Maybe someone who knows more about how the web GUI works can shed some light on the situation.

• RE: PXE-T36, PXE-E36 Sync Error.....NO Results

Try a different kernel, you may want to include the drivers and make your own, it’s surprisingly easy, most problems stem from the fact that the drivers aren’t in the kernel, they’ve tried to put as many as possible in there but some are still missing.

You can change your kernel in your Fog Management screen and try an older kernel and see if that helps, if not try these step below.
How to Build a Custom Kernel for FOG Server using Ubuntu 12.04

First, make sure you have G++ (GNU C++ compiler) and QT4 (Qt 4 Designer) installed through the Ubuntu software center.

Next, pick a Linux kernel you want to use to compile the kernel at www.kernel.org. (Used linux-3.10-rc2.tar.xz for this document;https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/testing/linux-3.10-rc2.tar.xz) Download the file to the ‘home/user/Downloads/’ directory. (default)

Then, download the Fog installation package installer. (Current version 0.32;http://sourceforge.net/projects/freeghost/files/FOG/fog_0.32/fog_0.32.tar.gz/download) Make sure to download to the ‘home/user/Downloads/’ directory. (default)

Now we will extract the files to their proper locations.

First, extract the FOG installer to the download folder. (see below for command)
sudo tar -xvf /home/user/Downloads/fog_0.32.tar.gz

Then, we will want to extract the kernel to the ‘/usr/src/kernels/’ directory. If the directory does not exist create it. You will also need to copy the tar.gz file to the kernels directory in order to extract properly. (see below for commands)
sudo mkdir /usr/src/kernels/
sudo cp /home/user/Downloads/linux-3.10-rc2.tar.xz /usr/src/kernels/
cd /usr/src/kernels/
sudo tar –xvf linux-3.10-rc2.tar.xz

Now we can either use CORE or Kitchen Sink to create the kernel.

To use Core use the following command:
sudo cp /home/username/Downloads/fog_0.32/kernel/core.config /usr/src/kernels/linux-3.10-rc2/.config

To use Kitchen Sink use the following command:
sudo cp /home/username/Downloads/fog_0.32/kernel/kitchensink.config /usr/src/kernels/linux-3.10-rc2/.config

Once the .config file is copied to /usr/src/kernels/ you can now run the make xconfig command.
cd /usr/src/kernels/linux-3.10-rc2
sudo make xconfig

Now the kernel editor should pop-up after a few seconds. Here is where you will locate and select/deselect drivers you want to load to your custom kernel. (see screenshot for example)

Once you are done with your selections just save and quit.

Now you have to run one final command to write the kernel file.

For 64-bit systems:
sudo make ARCH=i386 bzImage

For 32-bit systems:
sudo make bzImage

You may get a few prompts during the compile, I just used default options (enter). It will take a while (10-30 minutes) to compile the kernel so be patient.

Now that you have created a custom kernel you will need to copy/cut the file to your FOG server.
Go to the /usr/src/kernels/linux-3.10-rc2/arch/x86/boot/ directory to find the new bzImage file you created. That is the file you need to import to your FOG server kernels directory in order to use it. (You can rename it or use the new kernel as the default kernel for FOG to use if you leave the name bzImage)

The directory where you should paste the new kernel is /tftpboot/fog/kernel/ on the FOG server.

Make sure you assign the custom kernel to the proper host in the FOG management GUI and then you should be able to Upload/Deploy. You might need to add the host manually; you’ll just need the MAC address of the NIC for the host.

Written by Ozzy

Thanks to ozzy for the write up, you can find the post here:
I experienced this too when setting up my first fog server, I noticed when I would disconnect form the wall jack and lost internet connectivity that it took quite a while to log in.

It may have something to do with the stats that it displays on the log in page.
