    • RE: Surface 3 - Unable to obtain DHCP

@george1421 Thanks, will keep that in mind about STP.

As for the network adapter, I basically got the USB 2 one from this thread - https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/6515/surface-pro-4-won-t-get-to-registration-menu/158 where Sarge mentions being able to get it to boot with the Amazon usb 2 adapter but not having any luck with a USB 3 one. The one I’ve got is the official Microsoft Surface one which is a USB 3 1Gb adapter.

I have tried through the docking station but I get the same error I get when I try using the USB adapter although I am unable to ping anything when in the fog section so it obviously isn’t working once it loads it up.

@george1421 Hey George, after posting yesterday (and reading other threads) I turned off spanning tree so our network connects to devices rather quickly now which is nice.

I just tried going from surface 3 > dumb switch > network switch > fog server but I’m still getting the same error unfortunately.

Wayne might be right with the adapter, I just find it strange it’s able to hit the FOG menu as it would need to be working via the adapter in the first place to get that far. It is a USB 3 adapter though which going through the threads, people seem to have had issues with. Do you guys think I could buy any USB 2 adapter or is there a particular model/version I should be looking for. I’ve gone through many of the threads Wayne has linked and I’ve only seen one model linked from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-Ethernet-Network-Adapter/dp/B00M77HLII/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1455902388&sr=8-4&keywords=ethernet%2Busb%2B2.0%2Badapter&th=1) and I was wanting to see whether I could find anything local before having to go down that route just as it would take a little while to be delivered before I could test to see whether that fixes the issue.

    • RE: Surface 3 - Unable to obtain DHCP

      @Wayne-Workman No luck with ipxe7156.efi

Same adapter as the one Nicolas was using in this thread - https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/6268/pxe-surface-pro-3/11 However I’m not really sure whether he got it working or if the adapter was at fault or not.

From looking at the other threads, a more generic usb2 Adapter might be the way to go if that does appear to be the issue.

    • Surface 3 - Unable to obtain DHCP

      Sorry guys, yet another thread…

Tried registering a couple of Surface 3’s through FOG but they seem unable to get a DHCP address (which is weird given they’re capable of finding FOG server and other machines work fine in terms of getting a DHCP address).

      Sorry about the poor pictures

      2_1489463464655_3.jpg

I went through the hardware compatibility option or whatever it was and I got this error message -
      0_1489463508028_4.jpg

As per the suggestion in the above image, I went to the Kernel Update page and updated to the latest however they didn’t help.

      More info:
      Fog Version - 1.3.5-RC-13
      bzImage Version: 4.10.1
      bzImage32 Version: 4.10.1

DHCP server - Windows Server 2012. I do know the DHCP server takes a little while to give out addresses but I’m not sure that’s the problem here.

Surface connected via USB network adapter, Microsoft 1gb one - https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Surface-Ethernet-Adapter/productID.325726500. Have tried without the keyboard and also via the docking station.

Not that I expect it to be an issue but I have tried ipxe.efi, snp.efi, snponly.efi etc.

    • RE: HP ProBook 650 G3 - Not fully capturing/deploying

Glad I took two different kind of images.

Single disk clone - Went through the process, on boot the file I created was still there, the only difference was it had uninstalled a lot of the drivers such as the NIC…

Multiple partition clone - Seems to have worked!

Thanks again for the help guys, much appreciated

@Tom-Elliott Testing it out now, it was able to create a single disk clone which it hadn’t worked well with previously, creating a multiple partition clone as well just in case so hopefully when I try deploy the image it will work.

Will report back later, thanks again.

    • RE: HP ProBook 650 G3 - Not fully capturing/deploying

      @george1421

Just had a look but it’s already got the latest BIOS on the system so that’s not causing the problem unfortunately. Not sure I’ll get much more of a chance to test this machine as I need to set it up for a user shortly and it’s the only G3 we have at this stage.

Thanks for your help though, any other ideas, feel free to mention them and I can test them out when I get a chance. Will be attempting to image a surface 3 and 4 so I’m sure I’ll going through the forums/posting again.

    • RE: HP ProBook 650 G3 - Not fully capturing/deploying

      @george1421
Firmware as in the one on the laptop? I haven’t checked yet, didn’t really think that could affect the imaging process, it is a brand new laptop though but I can check that out if you think that might be the issue.

Will run an update, I only just updated my FOG system the day before to RC10 for 11 to come out the next day!

When I was in UEFI mode, it wouldn’t boot to network at all (just sort of said booting to network then would go back to boot menu) apart from when I had it set to the ipxe.efi. When I was on that and on the FOG menu, clicking on any of the options would go for about 1 second before it would go straight back to the fog menu with the timer going down before it would continue to boot to Windows. In that short time, I don’t see a single error show.

      Edit:
Just adding to the above, when I boot to fog even on the laptop I was able to create a working image with, I do get the following error -
      0_1488946030523_1.jpg

Don’t know what the error creating epoll fd means. The part under I think is just trying to find the DHCP/network. I’ve noticed on this network, computers can take a little while to get a connection so I assume that’s why I get the sending discover messages for a little while before it eventually says “udhcpc: started, v1.26.2” “udhcpc: sending discover” and continues on with whatever task I’ve selected.

    • HP ProBook 650 G3 - Not fully capturing/deploying

Hi all, having a bit of an issue creating a working image of the above machine. Basically when I boot into FOG and do any of the options it will list a number of errors before continuing on with the task and completing as per normal. I had this happen when I did the quick registration, capture and then deploy however after doing the deploy, the laptop won’t boot to Windows as it’s missing the bootloader file so obviously the error is something I can’t ignore.

Have an older HP 650 G1 and I was able to capture and deploy the image fine so I’m pretty certain the issue lays with this new machine or at least there’s a setting I need to change to enable my FOG system to work with it.

Here’s the error I get once it starts a task from the FOG system -
      0_1488846877342_1.jpg

It will then continue on with the task and complete it. Below is what it showed after completing copying the image on the FOG server back to the machine -
      0_1488847531144_2.jpg
      0_1488850220943_3.jpg

Extra info if it’s of any assistance:

      • Server: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
      • FOG: 1.3.5-RC-10
      • DHCP on Windows 2012. Using undionly.kkpxe (found it to be the only one where I haven’t had to hit ‘S’ then type ‘Autoboot’ to automatically log into the FOG system.
      • Secure boot disabled, unable to disable UEFI as such but I turned on Legacy which is what I was using to boot to network.
      • I did attempt ipxe.efi (before finding out how to turn on Legacy) which would boot to network but whenever I attempted to do any of the Fog tasks it would just revert back to the menu.

Hopefully that’s not too much of an information overload. Basically I assume the issue is something to do with the errors I’m receiving in the first picture but I have no idea what they are/how I’d go about fixing those.

    • RE: Database connection appears invalid on install

@Sebastian-Roth said in Database connection appears invalid on install:

Can you please both upload your install logs?

Where would I find my fog install logs? Since I’m running Ubuntu Server I’ve only got command line, I’ve poked around a little but I don’t think I’m really finding what you’re after.

      Description

I’ve been having a number of issues getting FOG to install, previously I wasn’t even able to get to the database schema installer / updater page on my client when I was using the latest LTS version of Ubuntu (16.04.1). I’ve since installed 14.04 LTS today to see if I could get any further which I suppose I have by one step but I’m still unable to get it to work.

During the install I get prompted to access the fog management database to update it however when I get to that section it says my connection appears to be invalid and I’m unsure what might be causing the issue.

On the first part of the install I’ve noticed the below which I’m not sure is out of place or normal?
      0_1485912121925_fog1.png

Mainly with stopping the web services and the potential need to reinstall apache and php files.

The rest of the install appears to work fine, the web service starts up correctly at the end of the install and it doesn’t report any further errors until I get to the below part when I load the database management site -
      0_1485912354498_fog2.png

      • I’ve gone to the config.class.php file and it has the correct MYSQL database password that I set on install so that appears right.
      • I’ve followed this thread https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/9344/your-database-connection-appears-to-be-invalid/11 and removed the packages line (no ver or veradds lines) and re-run the installer with no success.
      • I’ve tried running this command ‘sudo netstat -tap | grep mysql’ to see if my database was running and the return I got was basically as suggested I should if it is running as per this link - https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/mysql.html

Any suggestions on what I should try or anything I can provide on my side to help identify where it’s going wrong? I have next to no experience with Ubuntu so I don’t really know what to try.

      Thanks
