• RE: Moving from Norton to FOG

Thanks, I like the option of choosing what Image from the pxe menu I’ll give this a try when I get back to work this week.

As for the 1st question…looks like it might not work since all HD are different sizes as well. That’s ok it shouldn’t take too long to create images…(job security) 😉

• RE: Moving from Norton to FOG

Each computer has to have an opportunity to load different images for software and hardware testing. N. Ghost allows us to create and save the images to the 2nd partition for the user to pick and load the one they require for that system at that time.
We would like have the user download any image that is required for each system from FOG.
Is there a way I could set up a PXE boot menu that would allow this?

The 1st question was if we could use the current images and have FOG just save the 1st partition instead of the whole disk. I don’t think it would work due to Win$ and different driver packs required.

• RE: Moving from Norton to FOG

Just looking to save time from reinstalling each O/S one at a time. If I can just copy the 1st partition with the O/S that could be used for multi-deployment.

• Moving from Norton to FOG

We currently have several images from XP, Vista, Win.7 and Win 8. Each computer has several languages along with 32x and 64x on a separate partition. I would like to know if it is possible to load each image on the 1st partition and image to FOG using setting “single partition” only allowing the 1st to be imaged?

• RE: Connection timed out?

I did not install DHCP service on the FOG server and correctly pointed to the DHCP server on a different subnet. The firewalls, ufw and SELinux are both off, I’m out of ideas. Now learning how to use and read wireshark to help understand where the file is getting blocked. Not looking forward to re-installing again…even thou it was pretty easy.
If anyone has ideas or guess that would be great, otherwise I’ll post any findings if I find them.

• Laptops for home users?

Quite of few of laptops leave the lab environment to take home or another building for testing purposes…will they still be able to pull an image while out of the local network?

The DHCP server is on a seperate subnet…is there something I have to configure on my end (FOG server) or another switch for the network admin?

• RE: Connection timed out?

Kevin,
I don’t know if there are other servers here in my lab. I’ve just started and the last guy didn’t document anything. I can WOL computers using FOG but the pxelinux.0 file is getting blocked from transmitting. Is there a way to find out servers on my network without disabling each one? I’ve tried wireshark and even SIW but am unaware of exactly what to look for.

• Windows 8

Has anyone tried imaging Windows 8 yet?
Since it is coming out this year it would be interesting if anyone has tried the developers build yet.
I will give it a go if I could get FOG to work in here

• RE: Connection timed out?

I was trying to use gPXE boot disc on an old Dell Optiplex…found out that just press F12 brings up my network boot options
Now on to the next problem…o_O
“PXE-E32: TFTP open timeout”
research tells me that the client sends a request and the server receives and sends back ack along with packet pxelinux.0 but the file gets lost somehow…does this sound right?
Now from the Dell I am able to use Windows cmd and receive the packet via tftp x.x.x.x get pxelinux.0 command. But from my workstation (right next to it) I am not.
I’ve downloaded wireshark but am unaware on what to look for. If I can narrow down the issue to the DHCP server I can work better with the Network Admin.

• RE: Connection timed out?

I’ve triple checked with the IT department about the DHCP configurations options 66 and 67 being correct. I can connect and configure from other computers but cannot receive pxe boot file when restarting client computers. TFTP time out 😞

• Connection timed out?

I’m unable to resolve:

tftp://0.0.0.0/pxelinux.0… Connection timed out (0x4c126035)
Could not boot from filename “pxelinux.0”: Connection timed out (0x4c126035).
What is the make and model of the computers and laptops? How new are they?
I’m in a lab environment that test equipment with different scenarios. All the computers differ in age and type HP, Compaq, Alienware, Dell, Lenovo, and several self-built.
Right now imaging is done via Norton Ghost…one computer at a time 😞 With several images and languages on each computer. What I’m looking for is an .iso disk that I can drop in the computers that do not have pxe boot options from the BIOS, or is this even possible?

• PXE boot options?

In the process of setting up about 50-70 different computers and laptops, not all of them have PXE boot option. Is there some sort of boot CD I can keep in the computers at all times for this purpose?

Thanks for the reply, I’m using my home environment for testing since i’m pretty new with Ubuntu, but I’ll look into Clonezilla afterwards. As for the router I just bought a new one from D-link…I’ve never had a bad one in the past and didn’t realize the one I got can not use DD-WRT without risk.

OK one last question that will clear up my confusion----noob–>😕
If I setup FOG to run with MAC filtration
http://www.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php?title=FOGUserGuide#Integrating_FOG_Server_with_Existing_Network_Systems_in_non_intrusive_mode_using_MAC_filtration

The instructions state “This allows clients to get IP addresses on the network and connect to the FOG server”. Then to turn off and configure FOG’s DHCP and turn back on. Won’t there be a conflict later on between Windows DHCP server and FOG’s after I turn it on? Is there a step missing on this page to still update the Windows Server with the PXE forwarding?
Damn I’m such a newbie

• Router does not have PXE support

Hello,
Configuring a home network; D-link router with DHCP turned on but does not have the options of PXE forwarding to my FOG server. I’ve tried configuring my FOG server with MAC filtration (1 machine to test with) and get some results…until my other machines on the network (the wife’s and kid’s computers) can no longer connect to the internet.

I’m thinking, could I turn off my D-link DHCP option and allow my FOG server handle all the IP request, even the Wi-Fi?

• RE: New Install in current environment

I don’t have control of the Windows server (it’s remote), and it’s a pain to get someone from IT dept. to change it.
This is only a test between two computers for me to show the boss that this will work over current Norton Ghost.
After proving it will work then I will go about updating our current DHCP and DNS.
I have the MAC address of the test computer but how do you go about setting up FOG?
I’ve seen the wiki page-
http://www.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php?title=Integrating_FOG_into_an_Existing_Network_in_non_intrusive_mode
Do the computer have to get their DHCP from the FOG server? Or is there another way?
