• RE: Select partition not to upload
Why is there a partition on the same disk that is your “local backup”?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the “local backup” on a separate disk?
I agree, the process of backups were created before I was hired on…currently using Ghost 2003 boot up disc and creating images on 2nd partition. Our systems are loaded with Operating systems dating back to XP -> Windows 8.1, along with different languages of each…so you can imagine how many images are is stored. We do not use volume licenses…each image is retail.

• Select partition not to upload

When uploading image I would like to leave out a partition used for local backups.
Currently we have to upload the entire disk then return to the server and delete the partition.
This is very time consuming considering the back-up partition is sometimes over 100Gb

• Safely delete 2nd Partition

Having a HDD with two partitions (Main O/S, and Backup Images) I delete the partition “Backup Images” but there is a 3rd small partition. Would it be safe to also delete this before I deploy?

sda/1-Main O/S
sda/2-128 bytes? <-??
sda/5-Backup Images

I am very much interested in this,
Is there a way to create subfolders in the pxe menu?
Such as:

System100-
W7x86
W7x64
W8x86
System 101-
Vista86x
Vista64x
W8.1x86

• ProxyDHCP network conflicts?

I am unable to work with the network admins here on setting up the options for fowarding request through the normal setup. They also informed me that I am not allowed to setup an DHCP server.
Now my question is if I set up the Proxy DHCP will there be conflict with the normal DHCP server. Will the Network Admins find be able to discover my server?

Yes, no luck

• RE: Reboot = lost connection

Thanks for the suggestion, without going through the steps yet…I’m just wondering why I can no longer “tftp x.x.x.x get pxelinux.0” from a client system.
But still can “tftp -vx.x.x.x -c get pxelinux.0” from server end?
I’ve disabled ufw -“sudo ufw disable”
Is there something else?

• Reboot = lost connection

After I finally got it fully functional I restarted Ubuntu machine and since then I am unable to get pxe tftp boot.
I can still manage the web gui and ping the system. I am back to square 1 “PXE-E32”.
Unable to tftp get pxelinux.0 from client systems.
I’ve reinstalled FOG with same settings as first successful settings…no luck.
I’ve verified TFTP_FTP_Password, STORAGENODE_MYSQLPASS.
I am not using FOG for DHCP service.
What else might I be missing?

One last quick question,
I’m using an OEM key given to me from my boss that I’m pretty sure he gets from MSDN subscription.
Will using this key run out if Imaging over and over different systems?
Or will the oemscan.exe help resolve my question?

• RE: Sysprep required?

So your recommendation is to upload each O/S ghost image from each machine. I’m looking currently at 20 “localized” images 32bit and 64bit for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows XP, (forget about Vista) no one uses that crap anymore ;), Windows 2K only 2 images. Potentially looking at roughly 125 images for 50 computers = 6250 images! (not including 25 laptops, and handful of Mac’s)
Now that would be worst case possible. I wouldn’t load 125 images on EACH system.:) But this might be my best solution. Everytime I load an O/S is to upload it to FOG and align it to that specific system.
Now I have to figure out an easy numbering or letter system for these “educated” testers to follow

• RE: Sysprep required?

Thanks Bjorn for your time,

What happens here is not like a school environment where all systems are equal and imaged the same. Different hardware specs throughout the lab. I’m in an environment for testing peripheral devices i.e. keyboards, mice. Testing is done not only for USA but for other countries as well…hence “localized images”, along with Win XP, Vista, and even Win 2000 o_O , I’m currently installing Windows 8.

The current set up is each system has 2 partitions with different HDD sizes. 1st partition has the current O/S, the 2nd Partition saves the Ghost images where testers can select which O/S the desire then load it onto the 1st partition. I have to go to each system and install, update and save images.

They are all from the same Windows DVD install disk. When I install Windows I am given a activation key provided to me for about 10 licences then I have to request a new licence from my employer.

Would it be a good idea to use a program such as nlite to create an installation with drivers and activation then upload FOG for deployment?

• RE: Sysprep required?

Thank you Bjorn, I’ll have to read a bit more on that, that might answer my problems.

I think my question was misunderstood.
I have currently 50 machines mostly custom built here. Each machine has to be able to load localized images as well as different O/S. Different images are loaded several times a day. Sometimes testers will switch back and forth between Windows XP and back to Windows 7, eventually to Windows 8.
Currently We are using an older Ghost boot CD. to copy the 1st parition (current O/S) to the 2nd partition.
The 2nd partition holds all the validated O/S images.

From what little I understand each time I load the image from FOG after sysprep, it requires validation.
Please excuse my ignorance since I am still learning o_O

What can I do to preserve the licence for the “machine” and not the image?
Is there something else I am missing other than using FOG server, ie…WAIK, or VAMT 2.0?

Thanks for your time and I really enjoy and learning more about FOG. It really is a great tool for administrating Windows.
I’m hoping to get this running soon then I can start imaging the handful of Mac’s in here.

• RE: Sysprep required?

Ok since my boss doesn’t want to use VLK or SLP is there something else out there that I can move from Old Ghost program that uses OEM keys? Something preferably PXE boot from remote station. Or should I try and upload each system image?

Thanks for your time ssx…have you been able to upload the “sysprep.zip” files yet, I can’t seem to find the posted link.

• Sysprep required?

I understand most of the guides here show that sysprep is required to help prevent future hardware conflicts.
My question is about Licencing…everytime a client is deployed with a sysprep image it requires activation.
In my lab I require different client machines to be able to use different images at any time, i.e. Windows 7 64x, 86x, Windows XP, Vista…etc.
I’m looking for a way to images the machines without having to activate each time I deploy, this would be costly.

Thanks Catsrules,
I figured it out…the files were there already, but since I’ve been switching back and forth to a live network and an isolated network. I’ve been using two network connections with different settings…long story short, I just restarted the machine

• DHCP configuration missing?

I am working in an isolated environment with three computers. Everything was fine until I attempted to change the pxe boot menu to allow users to pick their own images to load. Some how after rebooting the FOG server, it no longer issues IP addresses. I’ve looked into the DHCP3 file and do not see anything but folder “dhclient-enter-hooks.d” which holds a samba file.
I’ve tried to restart the service “sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart” but command line responds “command not found”
