Fog 1.2.0 question

Hey all,

So I set up Fog 1.2.0 about 6 months ago and am now in rebuild stage.

I just received a new Fiber NIC for my server and am going to be upgrading sometime soon. I have a few questions though.

1. Is there any news about when 1.3.0 will be released?
2. If I rebuild now, can I upgrade later without re-install or will 1.3.0 be clean install only?
3. Is this still windows compatible or should I stick with Ubuntu?

Probably fairly soon… If I had to guess, it’ll probably happen sometime in the Fall. However you can upgrade to FOG Trunk right now, FOG Trunk is the “work in progress” version of FOG that will eventually be the 1.3.0 release. I can provide more info about moving to trunk if you’re interested.

You can always upgrade.

Still windows compatible?? FOG Server does not install on Windows. Some people have managed to run Storage nodes semi-successfully on Windows Server… I wouldn’t recommend it.

If you’re rebuilding from scratch, I’d recommend moving away from Ubuntu and going with either Debian or CentOS or Fedora Server. However, that choice is up to you… and we will provide help with Ubuntu should you need it.

Which of those 3 would you suggest the most?

@nengelhardt It depends on what version of FOG you want to use.

If you want to use 1.2.0, the latest Debian and Ubuntu and CentOS and all late Fedora releases are totally off limits. And I’d recommend an older CentOS version in that case.

If you’re going to roll with FOG Trunk (like so many of us do), then I’d say Fedora 22 Server.

Oh. I’m using 1.2.0 on Ubuntu Server 14.04.2. It’s being a pain in the ass. This explains why. What’s a good way to migrate it to Fedora 22 server?

@nengelhardt Export your images and host list, build up a new Fedora 22 server build, install FOG trunk, and import your hosts and images, then recreate your “image definitions”. Then set your DHCP option 066 to reflect the (possibly) new IP address.

The easiest way to accomplish this is to run in parallel for a little while. Although many people don’t just have spare servers or powerful desktops laying around to dedicate to a new FOG server… But if you did, it’d be as easy as mounting the remote NFS share on the new FOG server to a temporary directory, and then copying over your images. The host export bit is just done in the web interface under Host Management. You may not even need or want to do this if you have only a few machines registered.

If you don’t have spare hardware laying around, you’ll need to connect to a remote windows share and just copy your images there (recursively). You would then later connect to that share via Fedora 22 Server and copy them back (CLI recursively).
