      We have just recently made the jump from Version 29 -> Version.1.2.0 in FOG, and are having some inconsistent issues - failures to image - with our new images.

      • We did the suggested method of going through V.32 before jumping to V.1.X.X
      • Changed the 67 Option in DHCP

      We lost one image - not a large deal, it was not that important to us - but now we’re skeptical to updating anymore.
      However, I have tested about three images so far, all of which is on one model computer - Dell D620 - and two out of three have given the same fatal error of not working.

      Let me try to explain what is going on:

      • Download an image from our old images (partImage)
      • It works! Time to update the image
      • Image is updated and now we shall upload the file to our server
      • Now we shall test it by downloading the file to another computer (partClone)
      • Now, after it is downloaded, it will cycle through boot sequence and into Startup Repair

      That is all it will do. Normally when this happens you get a menu that asks whether you want to Perform Startup Repair or Start Normally - that screen never appears; nor does Advanced Menu - F8 will not boot into the menu, ever.
      It just turns the computer on, and goes through screens similar to if you were to install Windows from scratch. (Little “Windows is Loading Files” white bar at the bottom, then another load screen, then Startup Repair)

      Normally that is what it would do if it was a defective hard drive that was receiving the image, or a bad kernel - at least that is what we experienced in the past.
      However, the inconsistency starts when we did manage to get one image to work. We downloaded, updated, uploaded, downloaded to testers, and then they worked without a single issue - same model computer, D620.

      They are the exact same computers, taking similar images, with the exact same FOG kernel, and act like they are only taking the images when they feel like it. We even tried updating and re-uploading the image that wound up working, and it immediately stopped working upon the very next download. BIOS does not seem to have an effect on it either, because we have some that are running AO2 (yes, I know that we need to upgrade them. Badly.) or AO8, AO10, etcetera.

        @Omanimous I can assure you that FOG still works on Dell D620s. I have a D620 as my personal laptop at home and I have no issues with it (I run a fog server at home and work).

        Please try to set option 067 to undionly.kkpxe

        What distribution and version of Linux is your FOG server running on? (this is important)

        Please post the output of this:

        ls -lahRt /images

        I’ll use the output from that command to give you some other commands so we can poke around and see what might be wrong with your images.

        Please help us build the FOG community with everyone involved. It's not just about coding - way more we need people to test things, update documentation and most importantly work on uniting the community of people enjoying and working on FOG!

          Testing a theory of mine and seeing if it goes through - in which case I will feel very dumb in not trying first.
          I’ll also talk to my network administrator about changing option 67 - I believe that we tried undionly.kkpxe, but I do not recall if we kept it the same or used one of the other tftpboot options.
          Current Distribution of Linux is CentOS 6.3

            @Wayne-Workman I think I found out that this might be user error, so I would hold a minute before you go rooting around in that code.

            *Edit: Update - My thought was FOGprep. Did not use it before because of this link:

            tried it recently with a new image, and it seems to have worked. Will play around with it for a bit; HOWEVER, tried it with an image that was giving me fits before, and nothing new has changed. Currently trying to upload from the same machine with FOGprep, and will try from another if that does not work.

              Sorry for taking a while to update this: (Been out for a week)

              • Changed Option 67 in DHCP to undionly.kkpxe and it seems to be working fine.

              As of right now I’m testing a few things at once, and I believe I managed to get a Dell 755 to upload then download. Had a few kinks with it, but it’s updating Windows right now and I’ll test another up-and-down dry run - with both the D620s and D755s - before I call it good.

                lol glad you got it working. I’m sure it will be fine.

                In the future, when you have network booting issues, the boot file should always be your first thing to inspect and think about 🙂

                Please help us build the FOG community with everyone involved. It's not just about coding - way more we need people to test things, update documentation and most importantly work on uniting the community of people enjoying and working on FOG!
