So I have an odd issue. I am running ESXi 5.1 in a large environment. I have created an image of Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2 that I have deployed hundreds of times. When it comes to Server 2008 R2 I have issues. I’m able to create an image of a 2008 R2 VM, everything passes in the test. When I go and try and deploy it the hard disk fails to pass muster. I’ve tried SAS and Paravirtual drives, thin, thick lazy and thick eager and they all fail. I can shut down the VM that I created the image on and boot it to check compatibility and it passes. When I create a new VM with the exact same settings it fails on the hard drive. Has anyone else run into this?
I’m running the Tom Elliot kernel.

Try using IDE virtual hard drives.

that’s how I get my test environment working on ESXi.

Unfortunately I cannot run IDE drives. These servers often run Exchange and MS SQL. Paravirtual drives do work as long as I’m using Server 2012 or Server 2012 R2. It’s odd that I’m running into an issue with Server 2008 R2.

What’s the OSID you’ve set for the Server 2008 R2 system?

The storage doesn’t matter either. Happens with DAS, NFS, NetApp, NexSAN and FCoE storage. 2012 works deploying to any of those storages and I can capture the 2008R2 image from any storage. I can’t deploy to anything.

WOW, okay so if I start to image the VM with Server 2012 then cancel it, change the image back to 2008 R2 and then re deploy, it images…
