If is run Fogprep, do i still have to run sysprep and create an unattended xml file ?
I want to upload an image with all the software that i need, not to stop in the login screen.very much appreciated before hand !!!

FogPrep was used in the earlier versions of FOG and before windows 7 was worked into FOG as being accepted as an image type.
FogPrep assists in removing some of the information that can cause issues while uploading. It is not longer REQUIRED, but it will not hurt to run it.
Sysprep is a process (I’m going to say this and catch flak for it) that is necessary to remove the unique identifiers of your image so it can be generalized and uploaded. (Just do it, sure it’s a pain to set up an answer file but once you get it working you will sing praises that you took the time to set it up and you can deploy an entire building untouched.)
Note that these two process are different. It is confusing because they used the word “FogPrep” and it closely resembles SysPrep, they DO NOT replace one another but were a tool to use WITH each other.
Once again the tweaks that FogPrep performs are no longer required, but it will not break anything if you use it either.

FOGPrep and Sysprep are two different things. It is my understanding that FOGPrep only cleaned up a couple things to prepare the system for upload. It isn’t needed anymore, but won’t hurt anything to run it either.
That said, I don’t think, if you were to be sysprepping the system, that you would need to use FOGPrep at all, even in the older versions of FOG. This is because Sysprep would clean all the UID/SID information and prepare the system to an out of box state. I doubt it would’ve hurt to run FOGPrep [b]BEFORE[/b] Sysprep, but there may be issues if you ran it [b]AFTER[/b] sysprep. This is because the items that it is cleaning should no longer exist.

Very much appreciated for the information i was under the impression that Fogprep would do the same as sysprep… I really was trying to avoid sysprep since for about two years i had no problem in my domain environment, i just ran NewSid right after cloning a computer. i guess i am going to have to look into sysprep.

Set up a virtual machine and play with sysprep a bit, you will learn the ins and the outs fast. The hardest part of sysprep is learning to set up your answer file correctly. (Use snapshots and revert back to them, I hate to admit it but I doubt you get it right on the first try). If I remember correctly, it took me a good 3 weeks of fiddling to find the right set up.
A number of us here use sysprep so if you get stuck just holler we will do out best to help you.
The nice part is (i noticed in your other thread you spoke of using different images) once you get the answer file set up, you can re-use it in each of your windows 7 images

Thanks Jaymes… i haven’t deploy to users any Win7 am still in the testing face. I will work on a virtual machine better, i have a feeling i will mess up for some tries !!!

That would be awesome !!! this are my first steps going into syspreing and unattended files. If you need help, please ask and we’ll do our best. I’m not the best of documenting things, but I do have some scripts to help during the sysprep process. I think I gave one to Jaymes, or somebody, on the forum that basically tries to automate the installation of drivers into the system.
While I know we have the SAD2 method, I think having the drivers in the system before sysprep is much quicker than having the system load the drivers after the upload completes. To each their own though.

I just came across this post.
For drivers, we create a “DRIVERS” folder in C:\ that has sub folders for each model of machine that runs that particular image. Then, inside each model folder, we have sub folders with each driver. Then, we follow: [url]http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753716.aspx[/url] to add the folder locations to the default driver search path. This way, all drivers are installed on the first reboot, after imaging, during initial setup. It takes a little longer for the setup to run, but it won’t require multiple reboots, as no system devices are being utilized yet.

I was looking into the market for a commercial solution and definitely even some may say that their GUI is “easier” i am completely sure that FOG by far is the best solution as far as cost effective. The commercial companies charge per computer which is a ridiculous amount of money. I know this is an open source solution but i would most definitely donate so that the developers can keep the excellent job. If anyone knows a secure way to contact them please share it… I just feel like sharing this !!! have a nice weekend everyone.
