Dell Optiplex 7060 - getHardDisk error

  • Trying to deploy a freshly created image. We were able to create the image with the previous machine, but when registering the host this is what we get. Unsure how to proceed.

I did turn off SATA operation in boot as the drive is an SSD.

I used that trick to switch between “raid on” and “AHCI” during more than one year right now, and it worked well but…

Now we got NVMe SSDs in our new DELL computers, which need to be configured in “Raid ON” as “Sata Operation” to boot on Windows. Do you think that “GetHardDisk” error will be fixed in next versions ?

I think you have two different issues here. The first issue is the raid-on vs ahci mode. This is an age old issue between Intel, Linux, and uefi. With these three amigos working together linux can’t currently see any disks behind this configuration. If you change any of the three (really two) linux will see the disk. From what I understand the issue is related to intel not releasing the uefi raid drivers to the linux community.

The second issue may be new Dell hardware with these NVMe disks.

    1. What version of FOG are you using?
    2. What version of FOS Linux kernel do you have installed?
    3. What is the model number of the computer with this issue?

@arnaudrigole I believe I understand what you’re saying. You already have Windows installed on the machines, and switching to AHCI from the current RAID configuration will make your install unable to boot.

That said, while I understand the hardship it can require, you could switch it to AHCI and reinstall the instance of Windows.

That said, it seems, too me, that you may be potentially doing something illegally.

    1. You have your machines and they came pre-installed with windows. This is fine by itself, but trying to capture an image is not technically allowed.
    2. You’ve customized the machine to how you need it, and are trying to make an image that you can use for multiple machines of the same make/model. This shouldn’t cause any major issues from a legal standpoint so long as the machines to be receiving this image are using the very same install disk and software. But I believe customizing the OS is not allowed from a legal standpoint.

If you’re hard set on using the RAID in the current mode, I believe you would need to add mdraid=true on each of the machines host arguments that this would impact.

  • Hello Everyone,

I face a new issue and prefer to update this thread, because it’s very related to it…

I can easily reproduce the problem and provide you as many as infos, logs… if needed
I use Fog 1.4 and latest kernel.

Thanks in advance for your work!

  • Changed it from RAID to AHCI and it worked. Thanks!

@TTellez Is it set to AHCI or RAID in the BIOS?

    NonRAID
