Mac images

  • Good day all im hoping for a bit of help from a macxpert using fog to back up mac images, Now ive floated over forums suggesting a script that needs to be run on the fog box to allow the pxe boot menu, Anyone out there using Fog to back up mac images etc? any good tutorials around i can reference any help would be very well received

    Cheers All

  • as I mentionned on another thread, the way I image MACs is to PXE boot ubuntu (to have a somehow compatible linux running on the macminis I had on my hands), and use partclone to copy the hfs+ partitions… FOG can PXE boot that, but can’t image it… Might be a lot easier once made to work with partclone (there is a wiki page about how to have mac PXE boot).

    +1 for Deploystudio. As much as we like FOG, we still use Deploystudio for our Macs. It’s similar to a Lite-Touch\Zero Touch deployment through SCCM for Windows. Rock solid, relatively fast to setup, but just like anything else, you need to spend the time to set it up correctly for it to really save you time down the road.

  • We will be starting to image macs at our district soon and would like to learn more.

  • Well all you really need is ML OSX Server, and ally the tools are there, then just google deploying macs with OSX server deployment tools and you will be set. Send me a pm if you get stuck and we can coordinated show and tell session.

  • I would definitely be interested in knowing the deployment tools that are built-in. I do see that DeployStudio is a good solution but if there’s better way, why not…

    Darren;

    I do a lot of Mac Deployment Solutions, some of them with Deploy Studio. FOG as good as it is, and as much as I would love to be able to image Mac/PC’s is more of a solution for PC/Windows than anything else.

    There are a couple of tools for Mac Deployments I can recommend. But I have a solution that I have built that is rock solid and it comes with every mac. If you want PM me and we can talk about it. Just so we dont clutter in here, unless no one else minds. It’s all open source… =)

  • Darren, FOG does not currently support Mac imaging. http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/mac-feature.3727/#post-9042

  • Fog is great but you may find deploystudio a better fit for your needs. It works very well and is very intuitive for imaging macs although it will be yet another service you will have to manage.
