Store images on another server (smb or ftp)

Hi guys,
I want to test fog (what a wonderful project !), and i have a question:
Is it possible to store the images on another server on an smb share or ftp site and to not use the nfs server?

not without heavy modifications to the code. When uploading or deploying images, NFS is used to to access the image files.
